State of Emergency in Tunisia Extended

RECENTLY updated advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth website is that A state of emergency is still effect in #Tunisia. It has been extended a number of times, most recently on 16 February 2017 by three months.

"Since the terrorist attack in Sousse in June 2015, we have been working closely with the Tunisian authorities to investigate the attack and the wider threat from terrorist groups in Tunisia. Although we have had good co-operation from the Tunisian government, including putting in place additional security measures, the intelligence and threat picture has developed considerably, reinforcing our view that a further terrorist attack is highly likely. On balance, we do not believe the mitigation measures in place provide adequate protection for British tourists in Tunisia at the present time."

Travel advice updated for The Gambia

FOLLOWING the presidential elections on December 1 and subsequent challenging of the election results by the incumbent President, Yahya Jammeh, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises against all but essential #travel to The #Gambia due to ongoing political uncertainty and potential military intervention.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has urged british citizens currently in The Gambia to leave by commercial means if they have no essential need to remain.

The potential for military intervention and civil disturbance is high and could result in Banjul International Airport being closed at short notice.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office urged all travellers to take extra care, keep in regular contact with your tour operator and airline and continue to monitor travel advice and social media updates in case tensions rise as the current political deadlock continues. Avoid large crowds and avoid discussing politically sensitive topics in public.

There is an underlying threat from terrorism. You should be vigilant after recent attacks in Cote d’Ivoire, Mali and Burkina Faso, especially in places visited by foreigners.

Visitors to Turkey told to carry passports at all times

BRITISH holidaymakers in #Turkey are being advised to carry their passport and a printed copy of e-visas at all times.  

The UK government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice comes as Turkey’s president announced a three-month state of emergency following last week’s failed coup. 

The FCO said some dual nationals carrying green or grey passports might be questioned on leaving Turkey, but added that the state of emergency isn't expected to affect tourists. ‘Although security force activity may be visible from some resorts, coastal resorts don't appear to be significantly affected at present'. 

The state of emergency means the government will be able to enforce curfews, restrict or suspend rights and freedoms, have tighter control on the media, and greater powers of arrest.
