Bed and breakfast – in a tree

GOODLEAF on the Isle of Wight will be unveiling a new tree top experience in April/May, 2018. Taking place in the grounds of historic Jacobean manor house Northcourt, in Shorwell, Goodleaf Tree Climbing will offer Tree Top Camping for the very first time on the #IsleofWight.

Sleeping in special ‘Tree Boats’ imported from the USA, climbers will learn the ropes with recreational tree climbing experts Goodleaf, before spending the night sleeping high in the canopy of a beautiful 15 metre beech tree in this beautiful location deep in the rural heart of the Island.

Supper can be taken at the local pub The Crown Inn in Shorwell before ascending into the canopy, relaxing and enjoying a bird’s eye view from your “bed for the night”. Breakfast will be delivered to you in your hammock by the instructor. The cost is £350 per person; £450 for two people; and £550 for three. There will be a maximum of ten overnight camps a year.

Westonbirt Arboretum opens UK’s longest treetop walkway

THE LONGEST treetop walkway in the UK has opened to the public at the National Arboretum at #Westonbirt, Gloucestershire.

The walkway starts and finishes at ground level using the topography of the land, rising 42ft as it follows the valley floor.

The sinuous elevated 320-yard route meanders through the arboretum, offering the chance to get up close with trees and the canopy, as well as views across the historic landscape.

Architect Glenn Howells said: ‘We are very proud to have designed this unique treetop walkway for the historic and internationally renowned arboretum at Westonbirt. The walkway allows all visitors, regardless of age or ability, to experience the site from the treetops for the first time. Focusing on visitor needs and materiality, the walkway is designed to disappear as a sinuous silver ribbon that meanders between trees and canopies. The aim is that this new feature will greatly enhance visitor experience and help to ensure Westonbirt's popularity for many years to come.’

Trees ’r Us

Annie Ovenden - Lightning Bolt, oil on canvas

THE ARBOREALISTS, an exhibition at St Barbe Museum & Art Gallery, Lymington, Hampshire, will showcase works by 36 contemporary artists on the theme of trees. The exhibition opens on April 23 and runs until June 3.

In 2013, the gallery mounted a successful two-part exhibition Under the Greenwood – Picturing the British Tree; the second exhibition featured contemporary artists’ responses to the subject. Such was the impact of this show, and the spirit of camaraderie engendered in a diverse group of artists, that they took on a more permanent identity as the Arborealists.

Their artworks are at turns dramatic and contemplative, demonstrating that trees still have relevance in contemporary art and are a vital element in the British landscape and sense of national identity.

Stapleton Parish, ink & gouache
Tickets, which include entry into the museum, cost £6 for adults, £5 for senior citizens and students, £3 for children aged 5-15 years and £12 for a family of two adults and up to four children (including a voluntary gift aid donation). Under fives are admitted free of charge.
