Qantas WiFi Upgrade

QANTAS customers on Wi-Fi enabled domestic flights will be able to watch their favourite shows, avoid missing out on live sport and listen to almost any song they like, with Foxtel, Netflix and Spotify coming on board to provide content in 2017.

With speeds up to 10 times faster than conventional inflight Wi-Fi, Qantas will offer customers video and audio streaming when the service is switched on its first domestic aircraft in late February this year. The rest of the airline’s fleet of domestic Boeing 737 and Airbus A330 aircraft will follow from mid-2017 onwards.

70Mb broadband services on Virgin Atlantic 

GLOBAL aero communications service provider Gogo has announced a partnership with Virgin Atlantic to offer in-flight connectivity services from next year. Gogo’s 2Ku in-flight broadband system provides download speeds of up to 70Mb over a local Wi-Fi network. 

Reuben Arnold, brand and customer engagement director at Virgin Atlantic said: ‘We’re always looking at ways to enhance the on-board experience for our customers and expanding in-flight connectivity across our fleet is just one of the ways in which we are doing this. We were impressed with Gogo’s connectivity solution and look forward to all of our customers being able to enjoy this service.’

Peloponnese to get 2^nd civilian airport

The Greek Civil Aviation Authority is to have partial use of the military airfield in Tripoli (Peloponnese) as from next year. The change will ease the strain on Kalamata – also a shared military and civil airport in the Peloponnese – which this year has seen a 54 percent increase in passenger traffic.

One in five summer flights delayed - Gatwick 'worst offender

A FIFTH of flights were delayed from the UK this summer affecting around 161,570 services, according to new figures. Consumer portal flightright.co.uk found there was a 10% increase in delays during the summer, with the average delay for those over three hours at four hours and 42 minutes. 

Flights from Gatwick to Spain were the worst affected with those from the airport to Barcelona seeing the most three-hour-plus delays. flightright.co.uk calculated that 397,000 UK passengers are entitled to £128 million in compensation for the delays and cancellations from June to August.

British airports slow to offer free WiFi

UK airports are behind those in Europe when it comes to offering WiFi services, with only two airports providing a completely free service. Data gathered by Skyscanner has found that Birmingham and London City are the only airports in the UK offering unlimited free WiFi, while many others offer a free service for a limited time before asking users to pay for more time.

Edinburgh offers two hours for free, while Stansted and Manchester airports offer an hour free before charging £5. Both Heathrow and Gatwick offer 45 minutes free before charging £2.95 and £3 respectively for an hour and more for two hours.

Many of Europe’s airports – including Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Dublin, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Paris (Charles de Gaulle and Orly), and Rome – provide a free unlimited service.

Holiday? What holiday?

UK workers will spend a total of 3,171,550 days of their holidays on work activities, according to research by Kwik Fit Mobile.

Its study revealed that 46 percent of those working full or part time spent part of their holidays last year on work activities such as checking e-mails, making work phone calls or writing and reading documents. Each of these holidaymakers spent an average of five hours and 24 minutes on work-related activity.

Although women workers were less likely than men to spend vacation time working, those who did catch up with work on holiday spent longer doing so. The average holiday time women spent on work last year was six hours 22 minutes, compared to four hours 19 minutes for their male counterparts.

The research also found that work has an impact on where one in four UK workers go on holiday. Fifteen percent say they need to have a good Wi-Fi or internet service whilst they’re away, 11 percent need a good mobile signal, and four percent stay only in hotels which have good business facilities.

Free Wi-FI 24/7 at Frankfurt

FREE Wi-Fi access at Germany's largest airport – Frankfurt – has been extended from 60 minutes to 24 hours. 

More than 300 Wi-Fi access points (particularly in the departure areas) facilitate internet access in the terminals. 

To use the free Wi-Fi service, people log on via the Deutsche Telekom HotSpot internet portal.

 ‘We are the first major airport in Germany and one of the first in Europe to offer passengers this level of free Wi-Fi service round-the-clock’ said an airport executive. ‘Frankfurt Airport is dedicated to meeting the needs of today's increasingly mobile and networked society.’

Norwich Airport among free WiFi leaders

A RECENT survey by Airport Parking and Hotels showed that of the UK’s 25 main airports, Norwich was one of only four to provide passengers with unlimited free Wi-Fi access throughout the terminal building.

Gary Blake, customer services manager of Norwich International, said: ‘We see the provision of unlimited free Wi-Fi access as essential, as so many people now travel with Smartphones, tablets and laptops. In addition, we also offer a free-to-use business zone, a dedicated quiet area within our departure lounge offering free access to a Wi-Fi printer, charging points and work stations.

The other airports providing unlimited Wi-Fi access were named as Aberdeen, Birmingham and London City.
