Kaikoura open for business

SINCE
the Kaikoura earthquake last November Tourism New Zealand has been ensuring international travel sellers are aware that #NewZealand and the #Kaikoura region are open for business.

“We are doing a lot of work to ensure that travel sellers continue to recommend Kaikoura as a destination," says René de Monchy, Director Trade, PR and Major Events at Tourism New Zealand.

“We are encouraging trade agents to come to Kaikoura and see for themselves that Kaikoura is up and running and some are taking this opportunity.”

“Understandably there has been a drop off in travel to Kaikoura in the wake of the earthquake. As access improves, more tourists are arriving but it will take some time to get back to the way it was.”

Tourism New Zealand will continue to work with travel sellers and focus on autumn sales and beyond.

Almost ninety per cent of tourism activity providers in Kaikoura are now operating again. Whale watching, dolphin encounters and albatross encounters are operating daily, offering plenty of activities for visitors in town.

Gatwick set to be carbon neutral by Spring

GATWICK has revealed plans to become the UK’s first carbon neutral airport by spring.

Already, Gatwick runs solely on green energy after starting to use renewables four years ago.  Furthermore, it has succeeded in keeping its environmental footprint as low as it was in the early '90s, even though its passenger numbers have doubled since then.

Gatwick is the first UK airport to join RE100, a global group of 87 businesses committed to operating on 100% renewable energy.  The programme aims to create a huge increase in demand for renewable energy.

Last year, Gatwick announced it would be the world’s first airport to recycle Category 1 waste at a dedicated, on-site waste plant. Plans are in motion to convert the waste into energy to heat the North Terminal.

Gatwick’s CEO, Stewart Wingate, said: “The initiatives announced today are important milestones in Gatwick’s journey to become the UK’s most sustainable airport and one of the greenest in the world.

Oasis of calm in Tokyo's business district

SITUATED in Otemachi, the economic center of #Japan, surrounded by financial and media giants you will find “HOSHINOYA Tokyo”. Otemachi which is next to the Imperial Palace, was an area of Bushi’s (vassals) mansions during the Edo-period and has a distinctive atmosphere different from other areas of Tokyo such as Shinjuku or Shibuya.

HOSHINOYA Tokyo is uniquely created as a “Japanese Ryokan”. A ryokan is a traditional Japanese style inn where you can relax in a tatami-floored room with hot spring baths and seasonal cuisine.

Ryokans, however, are hard to find in large cities and are more typically located in scenic areas such as in the mountains or by the ocean where the beauty of the seasons are celebrated.

Now staying in a ryokan is one of the most popular experience for tourists from overseas to enjoy the authentic Japan.

First golf course being built at Halong Bay

HALONG BAY, north Vietnam's dazzling tourism magnet, is about to offer another reason to visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed region: a world-class #golf course perched above the old town, overlooking the spectacular limestone karst-riddled bay.

Although a site above the city was set aside for a golf course years ago, actually playing golf in such a stunning environment has been, until now, a dream. Hanoi-based FLC Group, which is developing golf resorts along Vietnam's 3260-kilometre coast, is mid-way through building a spectacular 18-hole par-71 course that will be accompanied by a hotel, convention centre and villas for sale.

FLC Golf Links Halong Bay resort's expected opening date is third quarter 2017. With four holes directly facing #HalongBay and others ridging a steep valley, FLC Golf Links Halong Bay will provide something golfers dream about but rarely find: views to die for, a year-round playing climate - all in a bucket-list destination with an abundance of non-golf activities.

Several million foreign visitors come to Halong Bay each year, as well as many more Vietnamese to experience the 2000 limestone karsts formed over 20 million years and jutting majestically from the 1553 square-kilometre bay.

Top 10 reasons to visit Valencia

#VALENCIA is one of the most vibrant short break destinations in Europe, and with new direct flights from the UK starting in 2017, it will also be more accessible. Easyjet will add direct flights from London Luton from February 3 and Ryanair will start flying to Valencia from Glasgow on March 27.

1.  First Heritage Fallas: The renowned Fallas Festival will be more special than ever this year, as it celebrates its new status as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity awarded by UNESCO in November. From 15 to 19 March the streets and squares of the city will fill with huge papier-mache sculptures, offering in many cases a satirical review of the past year. The fallas will be burnt at midnight on 19 March, after a few days of concerts, fireworks, parades and other special events.

2.  World Food Capital: Valencia has been named the World’s Food Capital 2017 by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation) and will be at the centre of the debate about feeding the world in a sustainable and healthy way this year. This accolade recognises the important role of the Valencian huerta, the well-preserved 10,000-hectare market garden that surrounds the city.

3.  New gastro-cultural hubs: Bombas Gens, an old hydraulic pumps factory in the outskirts of the city, will reopen as a new gastro-cultural centre expected in spring this year. The striking example of industrial architecture from the 1930s will feature a new Art Centre which will house exhibitions, workshops and social activities, and will also be the new home to Ricard Camarena’s Michelin starred restaurant.

4.  New hotels: One of the most awaited new openings this year is the Marques House, a new luxury hotel in the city centre, next to the baroque Marques de Dos Aguas palace that houses the Ceramics Museum (renowned for its spectacular façade).

5.  City of Running: Valencia will host the Half Marathon World Championship in 2018 and many local athletes will be preparing for that but running enthusiasts will be able to join various races this year, including the Marathon on 19 November, or simply enjoy jogging along the Turia Gardens or by the seafront.

6.  New cycling ring road: Cycling is also a delight in Valencia, with many streets in the historic city centre restricted to normal traffic and a wide network of cycle lanes, which will be expanded this year with the completion of the cycling ring road. A cycle lane of more than 20 kilometres alongside the main traffic lanes of Valencia’s inner ring road will connect all the different boroughs.

7.  Silk Trail:
Valencia was City of Silk in 2016 and will host a meeting of the Silk Road Task Force this year, proof of the city’s important role in the global silk trade in the 15th century. Visitors can learn about it in the Museum of Silk and the new Silk Trail, a guided tour that takes them through the historic borough of Velluters, where the traders flourished, and into some of the most representative buildings of the period such as La Lonja (Silk Exchange), a World Heritage site.

8.  Sustainable tourism: 2017 is the Year of Sustainable Tourism and Valencia is a great place to celebrate it. Visitors can reduce their carbon footprint exploring the city on foot or by bike.

9.  Discover Valencia’s greatest artists: While not so well known internationally, Valencia has produced several great painters like Joaquin Sorolla or Ignacio Pinazo, whose works are celebrated in various exhibitions throughout the city this year.

10. Paella: Spain’s most international dish, paella, is always a good reason to visit Valencia, where it originates. Now there is even a new paella emoji available on Whatsapp to invite friends for a meal, whilst those who really impress their friends and relatives can learn to cook paella at Valencia’s School of Rice Dishes and Paellas.
