Miles ahead of the competition

AVIS Car Rental Australia has been awarded ‘Australian Leading Car Rental Company of 2018’ at the 25th Annual World Travel Awards Asia & Australasia Gala Ceremony. Avis achieved the recognition ahead of competition from the likes of Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty and Dollar Rent A Car. 

In addition to this national accolade, Avis also celebrated several wins in the Pacific region, including the ‘Leading Car Rental Company 2018’ category in Fiji, French Polynesia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

River Safari in Fiji

SIGATOKA River Safari have won two awards, The Fiji Pride Champion and The Fiji Tourism Leader award, at the ANZ Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards 2017 which celebrates the outstanding performance of those who have made exceptional contributions to their tourism industry.

Sigatoka River Safari (SRS) began operations in 2006 and is the world’s first jet-boat safari and village experience of its kind. It offers visitors of all ages a half-day adventure into the heart and soul of #Fiji. Passengers travel along the Sigatoka River aboard custom-built safari jet boats and visit authentic Fijian villages, experiencing a day in the life of the real ‘kaiviti’ (Fijian). 

Passengers take part in a kava ceremony, tour the village and are treated to a traditional Fijian lunch complete with singing and dancing. SRS operates daily and works with 15 different villages to minimise the impact of tourism on the village lifestyle, a key element in their success to date.

Skybus services now listed in Travelport’s airport express app

SKYBUS, operator of Australasia’s premier airport transfer service, has announced its arrival on leading travel commerce platform, Travelport, joining the likes of the highly popular Heathrow Express among others. 

The addition of SkyBus means travel agents using Travelport’s award-winning Airport Express App will be notified of the operator’s options; and can instantly book electronic tickets for SkyBus’ airport express services when they plan Melbourne travel itineraries for their customers.

Golf tourism on the rise in New Zealand

NEW ZEALAND'S unique golf courses, many created within landscapes forged by nature are proving a draw card for international visitors.

Golf visitors are up a record 31% annually, with a 16% increase in average spend per visitor. It is estimated that over 61,000 international visitors played golf in #NewZealand last year contributing around $329 million to the economy.

And the world is taking notice, helped by the country securing a range of major international events that will give New Zealand’s course exposure the world over like never before.

2017 looks to be remembered as the year of #golf with major events taking place including the first Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour event to be held in New Zealand.

The MCKAYSON New Zealand Women’s Open will take place at the end of September at the country’s newest course, Windross Farm in Ardmore.

The year of golf teed off last week with the ISPS Handa New Zealand Open at Queenstown’s renowned courses Millbrook Resort and The Hills. The tier one event is part of the Professional Golf Association Tour of Australasia.

Rounding off the year, the Royal Wellington Golf Club will host the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in October. The event will bring 120 top players from the Asia-Pacific region to the capital.

More Aussies jet away

IN 2015, 2.7 million Australians aged 14+ (or 13.9% of the population) took an overseas holiday – the highest number in many years. Despite the less-than-robust Aussie dollar and the undeniable spectre of terrorism, holidaymakers are jetting off in droves, according to Roy Morgan Research. 

There are no prizes for guessing which overseas destination was most visited by Australians on their last holiday: it’s cheap, relatively close geographically, and they speak English … New Zealand. Almost 12% of Aussies whose last holiday was overseas travelled to NZ, putting it comfortably ahead of Britain and the United States (10.1%).

But England was a clear favourite for Pre-Boomers (18.5%) and Baby Boomers (14.3%), and the US narrowly topped the list for Generation Z travellers.

‘More Australians took an overseas holiday last year than they have for years, with perennial favourite New Zealand sitting pretty as the most popular destination,’ says Roy Morgan Research group account director Angela Smith. ‘And why not? As well as being virtually a hop, skip and jump away for Aussies on the eastern seaboard, it tends to be easier on the wallet than Europe or the US.

‘While many other familiar foreign favourites continue to attract Australian holidaymakers, the past decade has seen Hong Kong and China slip from the top ten as newly-popular destinations such as Indonesia and Germany move in.’
