Up in the Air . . .

AER Lingus has unveiled its new livery and brand as it seeks to further expand its transatlantic awareness.

The new logo retains but restyles the Irish shamrock, adding a tilt to symbolise dynamism and speed, with heart-shaped leaves reflecting the warmth and hospitality of the brand, according to Aer Lingus.

Guests will see four shamrocks on the new livery. The first is within the new logo, the second sits on the tailfin, a third welcomes guests at the door, and a final surprise on the wingtip is in prime position for capturing on social media.

British Airways to go retro to celebrate 100th birthday

AS part of its 100-year birthday, British Airways has today announced it will be painting four of its aircraft in much-loved retro designs from across its past, with the first confirmed as a Boeing 747 in a British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) design.

The livery from the 1964 – 1974 BOAC era will adorn a B747, reg: G-BYGC. The aircraft will leave the paint shop in Dublin and arrive in to Heathrow on February 18, before entering service the following day.

This coincides with the 50th anniversary of the first Boeing 747 flight only a few days earlier. The BOAC 747 will be followed by three other aircraft which will all have different retro liveries, with details being revealed in due course. All four aircraft will fly British Airways’ routes, proudly showcasing some of the popular designs as part of the airline’s centenary celebrations.

Chic Chicago Stay

THE Ace Hotel Chicago made its home in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood in August 2017 within a stoic, industrial concrete and glass building, once home to an Italian-American cheesemaking company and, before that, a pair of mysterious brothers.

The vision for the hotel is inspired by the ever-evolving design history of the city and the heroes that emerged from it, as well as the idea that they would hand over their public spaces to the city they were built for. The Mies-inspired property has guest rooms with skyline views, event spaces big and small, a restaurant called City Mouse, a top floor bar named Waydown and a cafĂ© by Stumptown Coffee Roasters — their first outpost in the Midwest.

Gold for being green

ST LUCIA'S Jade Mountain resort has become the first hotel in the #Caribbean to receive the coveted LEED GOLD (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification status.

Nick Troubetzkoy, who designed and built the multiple award winning resort which overlooks the Piton Mountains rising from the Caribbean Sea in front of Jade Mountain, said: "The beauty of St Lucia's landscapes, the warmth and character of its people and the unlimited potential to create something very special here captured my imagination. "

Troubetzkoy described Jade Mountain, artfully sculpted into the mountainside, as "a response to almost every hotel I've ever visited ... where I found myself disappointed by what I encountered."

What has Scotland ever done for us?

VISITSCOTLAND has released an animation illustrating how different the world would have been without Scottish innovators. It promotes the 2016 Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.

The video also marks the 90th anniversary of John Logie Baird’s first public demonstration of his invention – the television – on January 26, 1926.

The two-minute animation features more than 25 major Scottish innovations and developments including television, the MRI scanner, ATMs, cloned mammals, toasters, and the kaleidoscope.

Other inventions in the film include:

  • the flushing lavatory
  • marmalade
  • the incandescent light bulb
  • the telephone
  • piano foot pedals
  • colour photography
  • criminal fingerprinting
  • the Kelvin Scale
  • vacuum flask
  • steam engine
  • first pedal bicycle
  • adhesive postal stamps

It is hoped the animation, which will be promoted worldwide through social media, will motivate visitors across the globe to visit the country that has inspired leading pioneers, inventors, creatives, architects, scientists, and designers.

Malcolm Roughead, chief executive of VisitScotland, said: ‘Whether it’s the home of the father of television, or the city where marmalade was born, Scotland is full of innovation and invention at every turn. The Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016 will shine the spotlight on our greatest assets and icons, as well as our hidden gems.’
