Get down with Dippy in Dorset

HAVE you ever spotted a dinosaur in a cathedral, a parliament building or a community centre? Dippy on Tour is kicking off its journey on the Jurassic Coast with a visit to #Dorset County Museum.

Never before on public display outside of London’s Natural History Museum, Dippy is travelling the length and breadth of the country from 10 February 2018 to late 2020. The British icon is on a mission to inspire five million people to experience nature, encouraging families and schools to explore nature on their doorstep.

#Dippy has delighted visitors since he arrived in London in 1905. In partnership with the Garfield Weston Foundation, it is hoped the tour will spark the imagination of the next generation of scientists and connect the nation with nature.


Dippy is at the Dorset County Museum until May 7, entry to see Dippy is free but be sure to book your space on the Musuems website.

Follow the footprints

WHEN dinosaurs walked the earth, they left big footprints wherever they trod. Physical evidence of this is prevalent around Isan in #Thailand, with massive #dinosaur footprints at the Phu Faek Forest Park in Kalasin. 

As the story goes, a family noticed strange footprints in the middle of a rock terrace back in November 1996. They later informed Thai geologists who came to survey the site. They discovered 21 footprints in total, belonging to carnivorous dinosaurs, believed to have lived in the area 140 million years ago. At present, only four footprints can be clearly accessed by the public.

Dinosaur adventure off the beaten track

PHU WIANG National Park is like many other dinosaur-related travel sites around #Thailand. It is weird, wonderful and wacky, located well and truly off-the-beaten track, or the so-called ‘tourist trail’, and is hundreds of miles away from Bangkok, in Thailand’s Northeast region of Isan. 

All around Isan, visitors are most likely to find huge #dinosaur statues towering over a park, at a zoo or alongside a temple. Dinosaurs eve decorate the tops of some public lamp posts as a shout out to the region’s big lizardry claim to fame. 

Khon Kaen province is famous for dinosaurs, and this yarn is all about travelling to the heart of dinosaur country in the Phu Wiang mountains where several important paleontological discoveries were made, including two previously unknown species: ‘Phuwiangosaurus Sirindhornae’, a 15-metre (49 feet) long sauropod named after Thailand’s beloved Princess, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, and ‘Siamotyrannus Isanensis’, an ancestor of Tyrannosaurus Rex (T-Rex) named after Thailand and Isan.

Dinosaur makeover

THE Field Museum of Natural History, also known as The Field Museum, is a natural history museum in the city of Chicago, and is one of the largest such museums in the world. In celebration of the museum’s 125th anniversary in 2018, SUE the T-rex is getting a makeover, and a touchable cast of the biggest dinosaur ever discovered will join the Museum’s ranks, thanks to a $16.5 million gift from the Kenneth C. Griffin Charitable Fund, one of the largest private contributions ever to a #Chicago museum. 

The museum will introduce the titanosaur cast (the largest dinosaur discovered) which visitors will be able to walk underneath and touch, while making scientific updates to SUE which will include an adjusted posture and the addition of bones more recently discovered as well as her own section in Evolving Planet to put her in historical context. 

SUE will move February 2018 and be ready again by Spring 2019, while the titanosaur will be fully assembled by late Spring 2018.

Tyranosaurus Rex Visits Cumbria

THE Rheged Centre in Penrith, #Cumbria will be hosting an exhibition from the Natural History Museum in London from July 12 - September 3.

The #Dinosaurs Encounter #exhibition features ten more intricately detailed models, with state of the art animatronics and sound effects that will transport you back millions of years in time. Study replicas of ancient fossils taken from the Natural History Museum’s Archives, compare your feet to the footprint of a T-Rex and examine a replica of its skull which you can touch and feel!

£6.50 Adult, £5.50 for concessions, £5 for children (16 and under) and Children 2 and under are free.  Timed exhibition entry daily every 1.5 hrs from 10:45am – 3:15pm.

Monster alert at the Eden Project

CORNWALL’S #EdenProject will be taken over by rampaging beasts this summer (July 24-September 2) for the #Dinosaur Uproar season.

The prehistoric programme will feature five times as many dinosaurs as last year's Dinosaurs Unleashed.

The stars of the show at Eden include:

• The Tyrannosaurus Rex – Otherwise known as the Tyrant Lizard, the T. Rex lived 65 million years ago and had teeth up to nine inches long. These vicious dinosaurs could weigh more than seven tonnes but were still fearsome predators.

• The Australovenator – The carnivorous Australovenator – meaning Southern Hunter – is Australia's answer to the T. Rex. With long legs, arms, and tail, it was built for speed and hunting.

• The Titanosaur – These were some of the heaviest creatures ever to walk the earth, some of which might have weighed up to 90 tonnes. Titanosaurs were well-armoured and had spikes on their backs.

• The Meganeura – A species of giant insect related to modern dragonflies but with a wingspan of approximately 30”. 

Chris Pritchard, Eden's production manager, said: ‘Last year we unleashed dinosaurs at the Eden Project and it was a roaring success. This year they're taking over! Everything about Dinosaurs Uproar will be bigger and better. We'll have five times more dinosaurs running amok around Eden and fascinating activities and exhibits for palaeontologists of all ages.’

Dotty for dinosaurs?

Dino Encounter at SeaCity Museum, Southampton … to September 27: Come face to face with some of history's most fearsome beasts, be greeted by moving #dinosaurs, discover more about man's obsession with these gigantic creatures, and learn about new techniques that are helping experts to understand more about dinosaurs. 

Fossils Rock at Winchester Cathedral … to November 1: A family trail will lead visitors through the cathedral to discover the stories within the stones. The cathedral is almost 1,000 years old, but the stone used to build it is millions of years old, created during a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Interactive and hands-on, it is an opportunity to 'find and feel' the cathedral's ancient history.

Dinosaur Isle, Isle of Wight: #DinosaurIsle is Britain's original dinosaur attraction. Meet life-size models of the Isle of Wight's famous five dinosaurs – Neovenator, Eotyrannus, Iguanodon, Hypsilophodon, and Polacanthus, and follow in the footsteps of these beasts on one of the museum's family fossil walks along the beach.

The Jurassic Coast, Dorset: Studland beach near Bournemouth is the easiest place to access the eastern end of the #JurassicCoast, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The spectacular, unspoilt coastline at Purbeck offers four miles of golden beaches. The gently shelving waters, designated trails, and fossil hunting opportunities make the beach a magnet for families.
