Cornwall to Copenhagen

SCANDINAVIA'S leading airline, SAS, has today announced that it will introduce operations from Cornwall Airport Newquay in 2019.

The airline’s inaugural route from the Airport will link Cornwall directly with Copenhagen, with flights operating Mondays and Fridays over the peak summer season (commencing 28 June 2019).

The new service not only opens a direct link between Cornwall and #Denmark, but also allows for passengers to connect onto a network of over 70 onward destinations in Europe, Asia and North America via a seamless transfer in #Copenhagen, including other popular European cities such as Oslo and Stockholm.

A major new exhibition: Titanic Stories

NEW at the National Maritime Museum, Cornwall is an exhibition, Titanic Stories, which will examine the stories of the Titanic’s momentous sinking on 15 April 1912, re-appraising many of the myths, controversies and assumptions that still linger around one of the most well-known historic events of the 20th century.

Working in collaboration with private collectors from overseas and national museums in the UK, ‘Titanic Stories’ presents rare and never-seen-before objects and items, as well as retelling the personal stories of many of the survivors, victims and descendants of the #Titanic disaster, including those from #Cornwall. The exhibition will offer new contextual information around the iconic sinking and what happened next.

Alongside documentary and personal photographs, letters, newspaper cuttings, compelling items such as a handkerchief waved from a lifeboat and a First-Class passenger list found in the pocket of a victim, will intimately bring this historic voyage back to life.

Easter in the garden of Eden

VISITORS to the Eden Project, #Cornwall, will be invited to free-range all over the gardens this #Easter holiday (April 1 to April 17) for a collection of cracking egg-themed activities. 

Traditional fairground games will be available throughout the holiday, as well as Egg Scramble: teams will have two minutes to hunt for as many eggs as possible in our crazy Easter garden, full of inflatables, ball pools and more!, Slide Eggs: will you be able to crack the egg and chuck it on target as you bounce down the inflatable slides? and the Golden Egg Hunt: every day there will be 12 fabulous golden eggs hidden across the Eden landscape.

Captain Bligh: Myth,Man,Mutiny Exhibition

THE exhibition runs from March 17 to December 31 at the National Maritime museum in Falmouth and remembers a notable West Countryman and significant national figure, in the 200th anniversary year of his death. 

It tells a story that challenges the more commonly known Hollywood depiction and brings to life one of the greatest small boat survival stories in history featuring relics from the voyage and a specially built reproduction of the Bounty launch, giving a very real sense of the situation of the 18 men who sailed it over 3600 nautical miles across the Pacific.

Following on from previous exhibitions at the Museum, such as Viking Voyagers, with #CaptainBligh the Museum once again takes a globally important story, and explores the Cornwall context, in this case Bligh’s Cornish roots.

The in-house build of the Bounty launch is part of a programme of reconstructions of historical craft in the Museum’s own boat building workshop.

Oggy Oscars . . .

THE sixth annual celebration of Cornwall's most famous dish; the pasty takes place at The Eden Project on March 4. The championships feature varieties from #Cornwall as well as from around the world.

Four pasty specialists – two each from the United States and Canada – will be competing to be named the world’s top pasty maker at the annual event also known as the Oscars of the Oggy.

In 2011, after a long campaign, the #CornishPasty Association won European Union Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status for the Cornish Pasty which means that only pasty makers based in Cornwall who make pasties in a traditional manner and follow a traditional recipe are able to label their products as Cornish.

Reindeers on Parade

THE annual #reindeer parade and Christmas procession through Truro, #Cornwall happens on Wednesday November 30 this year and is a favourite in the family festive calendar, heralding the start of late night shopping in the city.

The reindeer parade starts at 6.45pm from Victoria Square and travels via Little Castle Street, River Street, St Nicholas Street, King Street, Princes Street, Green Street, Lemon Quay and Lower Lemon Street and finally ending in Victoria Square.

There are chances to enjoy looking at the reindeer along route, which takes about an hour.

Christmas in Cornwall

PENZANCE, Cornwall's most south-westerly town, turns on its Christmas lights on November 26, and for the first time this year will include lighting up some of the town's landmark buildings and a town lights trail to see the elaborate Christmas window displays.

On December 17, the town also marks the birthday of Sir Humphry Davy, the local chemist who invented the miner's safety lamp. In his honour, the town centre is filled with the light of a lantern parade.

Closer to Christmas, the town hosts the annual Montol Festival on December 21. The event celebrates the 'coming of the light' and Winter Solstice, with a parade of lanterns through the streets and the lighting of the Midwinter Fire.

Helpful Holidays expands in Cornwall and Devon

WEST COUNTRY agency Helpful Holidays has added 23 self-catering properties to its existing collection of more than 700 holiday homes.

Prices start from £275 (£138 per person) for an autumn week at Peony, a base for two in Exmouth. A the top end of the price range is Nirvana, a four-bedroom Georgian house in the Cornish fishing village of Kingsand – at £1,830 (£204 per person) for a summer High Season week. Grade II listed, it has out-to-sea views and access straight to the beach via the slipway opposite.

In the South Hams village of Loddiswell, there’s the The Cottage, a picture-perfect thatched Devon cottage for four. Prices from £351 per week (£88 per person).

Cornish cottage specialist launches Poldark trail

Telly chefs to tantalize tastebuds at Eden

A FEAST of fabulous food and drink is on the menu when the Eden Project's Festival of Food returns with a three-day programme (September 9-11). The event will feature a line-up of celebrity chefs, foodie treats, and daily wine tastings. 

First up among the top chefs will be Vivek Singh (September 9), one of the most successful and respected modern Indian chefs in the country with three London restaurants to his name.

John Whaite (September 9) is best known as the winner of the third series of the BBC's Great British Bake Off.

Chef, presenter and author Phil Vickery (September 10) has been a part of ITV's This Morning show for more than 14 years, as well as appearing on Ready Steady Cook, Proof of the Pudding, and his own series Phil Vickery's Pudding Club.

Lesley Waters (September 10) is known for her regular television appearances on Ready Steady Cook, Great Food Live, This Morning and Chefs: Put Your Menu Where Your Mouth Is, and is the author of several cookery books. Lesley opened her own cookery school in West Dorset using local produce.

Brian Turner (September 11) is one of Britain's best-known chefs. He opened The Capital hotel kitchens in London with Richard Shepherd where they won a Michelin star.

Jun Tanaka (September 11) is head chef and owner of The Ninth, a contemporary restaurant in London.

All of the talks and demos are free with Eden admission.

Aqua Park makes a splash

CORNWALL'S first giant inflatable Aqua Park has welcomed its 15,000th guest since opening in April. 

The floating #AquaPark at Retallack Resort and Spa near #Padstow has been bounced on, slid down and conquered by thousands of groups, birthday parties, and businesses.

The course, which can take up to 65 people at once and is designed for adrenaline junkies aged seven and over, features a giant trampoline, climbing walls, slides, a 'blast bag', and a challenging balance beam.

Amy Keyter, marketing director at the resort, said: ‘The numbers have gone way beyond our expectations. The sessions have been jam packed with individuals and especially groups, businesses have really taken to it as a fun way of having some team bonding away from the office.’

Prices for the Aqua Park are £15 per person for one hour with discounts available for group bookings including birthday parties, hen weekends, and corporate team building days. Guests over 65 pay £6.50.

During the summer holidays, the Aqua Park will be open every day, with hourly sessions running from 10am to 7pm.

St.Ives Britain’s ‘most expensive’ resort

ST. IVES in #Cornwall is the most expensive #seaside resort in Britain, according to a survey by Cheaprooms.co.uk, which compared prices in 30 popular coastal destinations. 

The results were compiled based on the average price for the cheapest available double room in a hotel or guest house during the month of August. Only properties located within walking distance of a beach and rated at least three stars were considered.

With an average rate of £164 per night, St. Ives tops the league. Oban, on the west coast of Scotland, and Poole, on the south coast of England, are second and third, with average rates of £132 and £128 respectively.

At the cheaper end of the scale, with an average rate of £42 per night, Blackpool ranks as the most affordable UK destination. Other inexpensive places to feature include Swansea (£56) and Llandudno (£52) in Wales.

How to see Poldark’s Cornwall

Food fest in Truro

THE GREAT CORNWALL FOOD FESTIVAL is back again (September 23-25). More than 100 food experts and chefs will gather to celebrate the county’s bounty in a convenient, accessible, all-weather location in the centre of Truro. 

Festival organizers #Cornwall Food & Drink are welcoming two new high-profile headliners, April Bloomfield (Spotted Pig, NYC) and Tom Adams (Pitt Cue, London) who have teamed up to create a Cornish venture in a Georgian dairy farm near Launceston.

They are restoring the original farmhouse into a guesthouse and dining room and will also be using the 66 acres as a working farm. Eventually they hope to create workshops, curing rooms, and producer events. They will be joined on stage by Philip Warren, a local farmer and master butcher who supplies meat to many well-known chefs and restaurants in Cornwall and London.

The festival continues to be a free event.

Cornwall top in best staycations poll

#CORNWALL, the Lake District, and the Scottish Highlands have been named the most desirable summer staycation destinations in the UK, according to a survey of British holidaymakers by comfort-insurance.co.uk.

Staycation holidays are tipped for another boom year following a seven percent rise to a bumper 105 million trips made last year. 

In the survey of 2,000 adults, Cornwall took first place for the most popular destination, with the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands in second and third places respectively. The Yorkshire Dales and Norfolk Broads were fourth and fifth in the listing.

When asked which type of accommodation they prefer for a staycation getaway, 27 percent chose a leisure vehicle over a hotel option.
