Luxury lodges lead the self-catering revival

OUTDOOR holiday specialist, Pitchup.com, reveals that lodge-style holiday homes have leapt to pole position as Brits’ favourite UK and overseas self-catering accommodation this year, with bookings up 139 per cent*, a 70% increase year on year. Growth in demand for glamping accommodation options, such as yurts, is up 13 per cent compared with 89 per cent last year.

“This summer is all about lodges,” says Pitchup.com founder, Dan Yates. “We’ve seen a huge growth in lodge bookings for 2017 as they outsell all other types of glamping accommodation in the UK by 38 per cent.”

“Families in particular are rediscovering this more traditional style of accommodation, which is enjoying a resurgence as people look for relatively inexpensive accommodation, following the Brexit vote, that is weatherproof and offers all of the comforts of home and more.”

He continued: “Cabins, a more basic form of lodge-style accommodation, have also performed well, up 135 per cent year on year as budget-conscious holidaymakers search for affordable accommodation options.”

Cornish cottage specialist launches Poldark trail

BOUTIQUE Cornish accommodation specialist Milly & Martha has launched a brand #Poldark Trail across the county.

Created as a downloadable guide, the visual trail reveals where fans can find locations made famous by the BBC television series, complete with descriptions, addresses, and tips on what to do at each location.

The guide in printed form will be given to self-catering guests at their Milly & Martha holiday homes, and it can be downloaded for all to see and use here: www.millyandmartha.com/library/News/Poldark_Trail.pdf

‘Poldark did wonders for showing off some of the county’s most beautiful hidden gems,’ explains Martha Burnyeat, co-founder of Milly & Martha. ‘But visitors often miss out on the more under-the-radar locations the county has to offer, so we wanted to produce a trail that would not only give Poldark fans the chance to see the landscapes and places made famous by the series, but also help them discover beautiful off the beaten track locations to get a feel for the real #Cornwall.’

Milly & Martha’s Poldark Trail covers eight filming locations across the county, including:

  • Porthgwarra Beach
  • St Agnes Head
  • Porthcothan Bay
  • Poldark Mine

Expert advice busts myths about vacation rental homes

WYNDHAM VACATION RENTALS sets the record straight on self-catering holidays.

‘With so many different types of vacation rentals available, travellers can have trouble navigating their options,’ says Mary Lynn Clark, president of Wyndham Vacation Rentals North America. ‘Feeling mis-informed or overwhelmed can dissuade those travellers from trying something new. To help, we want to confront the myths that tend to surround vacation rentals.’

Myth #1: More space = a higher price tag. Many travellers assume vacation rentals are more expensive than traditional lodging options. Think again … Break down the per night, per person pricing while factoring in the space amenities and you can get great value. Rental homes can be even more cost-effective by allowing travellers to leverage convenient amenities, such as kitchens to save money on meals or washers/dryers to cut down on baggage fees by packing less.

Myth #2: I need to have a large group. Vacation rental homes come in all shapes and sizes, from studio units and condos in resort-style communities to larger, private homes with four or more bedrooms. Solo travellers, couples, and small families often enjoy rental homes for the convenience and can find the right-sized home for their needs.

Myth #3: I have to stay for at least a week. Not true … many vacation rental homes offer flexibility when it comes to length of stay. Travellers can often find rentals for weekend stays, especially during off-peak travel periods.

Myth #4: You have to book far in advance. False … there is no set timeframe in which you must book a rental home before your trip. While booking further in advance can give you a greater selection to choose from, there are often great last-minute deals in many popular destinations for those who can't plan as far ahead.

Myth #5: If I need help during my stay, I'm on my own. Quite the contrary; although, it does depend on how you book your rental home. If you book through a professional manager, there is typically someone available 24/7 to assist you with any problems you might have. If you book directly through a homeowner, you'll need to ask them how available they'll be during your stay.

Staycity Apartments focused on expansion despite Brexit

STAYCITY CEO Tom Walsh says the company is committed to almost doubling its room count by the end of the year.

‘We remain committed to expanding in Europe and the UK, where we are actively looking for further sites which will allow us to grow further in line with projections in our five-year business plan,” he says.

‘While the UK’s exit from Europe is likely to cause some uncertainty in both the property and the hotel sectors, particularly when it comes to investment, the UK is strategically an important destination for us to operate within, so I can see no reason to change our plans.’

Speaking at the Serviced Apartment Summit Europe in London, Mr Walsh revealed that Staycity’s trading results had last year seen an impressive hike. ‘We have achieved this through high levels of customer service, attention to guest feedback, and improved customer understanding of the aparthotel offer.’

The company opened its latest premises, in York, this month (July). It’s a six-storey, semi-circular, 197-apartment block built on the site of a former swimming pool. Staycity York comprises studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments with a café, lounge, gym, guest laundry, car park, and locker room.

Another site is due to open later this year is in Marseille, France, and further openings next year will be in London Covent Garden, Liverpool, Manchester, and Lyon, France. The company is on target to expand to 15,000 apartments by 2021.

How to see Poldark’s Cornwall

WITH #Poldark making a return to TV screens in Britain this autumn, Cornwall's beauty will be showcased again. Holidaymakers can indulge their Poldark fantasies at the 5-star Gwel an Mor resort with its strong connections to the series.

On the county’s north coast at #Portreath, it’s close to many Poldark locations, such as mining heritage sites, coves, and villages. Guests can even get the opportunity to stay in one of the luxury lodges where 'Ross', 'Demelza' and 'Elizabeth' lived during the filming of the latest series, as the resort was the base for the principal cast during their time in #Cornwall.

The resort has luxury self-catering lodges (two- and three-bedroom) and facilities including a spa, tennis courts and a children’s play barn and climbing wall. All of the lodges have sea views. Gwel an Mor is also home to Feadon Farm, the resort's own wildlife and conservation centre, where guests can have guided ranger-led experiences and meet the tame and rescue animals which live on site.

For Poldark fans, the resort runs guided tours of the Cornish locations which appear in the programme.

Cyprus launch for Your Nice Apartment

BOUTIQUE holiday accommodation specialists Your Nice Apartment has added #Cyprus to its portfolio.

‘For years, the accommodation options in Cyprus were limited,’ says Simon Walker, the agency’s co-founder. ‘You either travelled there for a traditional fly-and-flop holiday in large, often dated high rise apartments in coastal resorts or you headed for the foothills and interior, where accommodation often resembled a holiday home your Grandma had styled.

‘In the 15 years since the launch of agri-tourism, though, the accommodation offering has matured. What we wanted to do was curate a property collection which captured the zeitgeist, offering stunning beach front apartments – a slice of California cool – but also work with a new wave of holiday home owners in traditional villages, those who have understood the need to transform historic homes into seriously stylish holiday retreats to attract the UK holiday market.’

The company expects to see a rise in tourists during September and October, when Cyprus is one of the best places in the Mediterranean to catch late summer sun.

‘Nowhere in the Med is warmer or more reliably sunny than Cyprus in September and October,” says Mr Walker, ‘with nine hours of sunshine a day and temperatures of up to 28C. The sea, having been warmed by the searing heat during July and August is like a warm bath.’

Properties range from Delphinium, a £32 per night apartment in Larnaca sleeping four, to the Beach House in Konnos Bay sleeping six from £142 a night.

The agency, which also has properties in southern France and Ireland, will be launching a range of add-ons such as walking, cycling, and wine tours.

Its Cyprus launch coincides with the introduction of UK-Cyprus flights by budget airline Cobalt Air.

All-inclusive loses popularity as more UK families opt for self-catering

RESEARCH by Leeds Building Society has found that self-catering is the most popular choice for families, as they turn away from the traditional all-inclusive deal.

More than two-fifths of holiday-goers opt for self-catering, compared to less than one in five buying all-inclusive.

The survey uncovered a variety of trends when it came to travel habits and holiday finances, with 46% of people saying they spend more on family holidays compared to five years ago with the average spend on flights and accommodation alone topping £1,400, with the addition of £700 spending money.

Women were more likely to set a holiday budget, as well as decide where the family is going. However, men tend to spend more while travelling, with an average of £725 per holiday compared to £689 for women.

When it came to planning for their trip, a third of respondents plan six months or more ahead of their holiday, with women being more likely to do this than men.

The survey also asked about the biggest time wasters for travellers, with delayed flights being the most frequent at 54% and waiting for the luggage carousel coming second at 43%.

National Trust hide-aways

THE NATIONAL TRUST has hundreds of places to stay across England, Wales and Northern Ireland this summer.

From former fishermen's houses on the coast and farmhouses with plenty of space for all the family (and the dog) to stone dwellings in the back and beyond, the trust’s property collection has something to cater for all self-catering tastes.

Here are some new for 2016 …

Ferry Cottage, Brixham, Devon: Thanks to a National Trust restoration project, this Grade 2 Listed detached cottage on Agatha Christie's famous Greenway estate opens for the first time this summer. The two double bedrooms have uninterrupted views across the River Dart towards the village of Dittisham. Guests have free access to Greenway House during opening hours and unlimited access to gardens during their stay.

9 Arlington Row, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire: Thousands of tourists flock to the Cotswold village of Bibury to photograph the cottages on Arlington Row. Number 9 is the only holiday cottage in this location. The buildings date back to 1380 when their function was a monastic wool store. Sleeps three.

The Old Rectory, Rhossili, Swansea: This house dates from 1850s and is above a wide expanse of sandy beach, with uninterrupted views of the sea and the tidal island of Worm's Head. Dylan Thomas nearly bought this house, but at 15 minutes from the nearest pub it was a walk too far. Rhossili Bay is good for surfing. Sleeps seven.

Rockside Cottage, Northumberland: The cottage is part of a square of fishermen's houses. Sleeps four.

Woodford Cottage, County Fermanagh: A former piggery on the Crom Estate, the cottage has two bedrooms and a well-equipped kitchen. Guests can spend the holiday fishing, biking, kayaking, and walking without ever needing to leave the estate. Sleeps four + a cot.

Triumphal Arch, Leominster, Herefordshire: Designed by Henry Holland, this unusual cottage is situated in one half of the entrance archway to the Berrington Hall Estate. The cottage has a private garden, and guests have access to Berrington's Capability Brown-designed gardens and parkland when the house is closed to the public. Sleeps five.

Greenlands, Studland, Dorset: Newly-renovated by the trust, Greenlands is a farmhouse on the edge of Poole Harbour. The house has views over the harbour across to Brownsea Island (a haven for wildlife, including the rare red squirrel) and inland over Dorset Heathland. Sleeps five.

Watermill Apartment, North Norfolk: A watermill conversion beside the coast road between Wells and Brancaster, with fine views of the stream and surrounding countryside. Sleeps four + two.

East Cottage, White Cliffs of Dover, Kent: This former lighthouse keeper's cottage is in one of the most dramatic places in England. Sleeps four.

Lighthouse Keeper's cottage 1 and 2, Souter Lighthouse, Tyne and Wear: These historic cottages are on the clifftops on the North-East coast. Both cottages sleep four.
