UK holiday makers set to opt for all-inclusive

A new research study highlighting the key consumer trends in the UK holiday market has been added to the vast repository of Market Research Hub (MRH). The report offers holistic analysis on major factors that are shaping the holiday market in the UK.

On account of the growing inflationary pressures, UK consumers are likely to opt for those deals that offer all-inclusive packages. The preference for all-inclusive deals is likely to increase during the summers, as a high percentage of consumers are expected to focus on reducing expenditure on foreign travel. The pressures on consumer spending are also likely to result into a preference for those destinations that are cheaper to visit.

Domestic tourism on the rise in South Africa

BETWEEN January and June this year, South Africans made 12.7 million domestic trips which is an increase of 23% when compared to last year. They spent R15.3 billion compared to last year’s spend of R9.1 billion in the same period. About 25% of this expenditure was on holiday trips, which accounted for 10% of the total number of trips.

“A lot of work has gone into encouraging South Africans to get to know and travel their own country. These figures show that they heeded the call. This is significant because the more we know our own country, the better hosts we can be to visitors from other countries,” concludes Chief Executive Officer of South African Tourism, Sisa Ntshona.

Keeping your travel money safe

RESEARCH reveals that Brits resort to rudimentary tactics for managing their money abroad, with 65 percent admitting to hiding cash in shoes, clothing, or under mattresses when on holiday.

Rob Darby from Escape Travel Card has advice to travellers on how to look after holiday money when abroad:

Carrying cash

To avoid repeatedly paying ATM charges, travellers often opt to carry large amounts of cash, which could make them vulnerable to loss or theft. Using a prepaid currency card however, means that ATM charges can be avoided, removing the need for holidaymakers to carry lots of cash with them and giving them peace of mind.

Local currency or Sterling?

When using a credit or debit card for shopping abroad, tourists are often given the option to pay for the transaction in their own currency rather than the local one – which is portrayed as being more convenient. Rather than the till simply showing the customer what the amount translates to in their domestic currency, it usually uses a less favourable exchange rate meaning the traveller pays extra. Tourists are better off paying in local currency on their prepaid travel card to avoid paying these steeper rates, as this kind of expense can add up during the course of a trip.

Manage your budget online

It’s easy to get carried away when you’re making the most of your time abroad, but it’s important that holidaymakers keep on top of budgets so they don’t leave themselves short at the end of the trip. By using a currency card, such as the Escape Travel Card, that offers a secure online account to manage spending, travellers can stay clued up on their expenditure in the same way they would at home. Using the Escape online cloud account, cardholders can view their balance and statements and top up their account by debit or credit card. They can also check their balance by text with the Escape Travel card and receive low balance alert texts to warn them if they’re funds are running low.

Be safety wise

Preparing for the worst-case scenario is always advised when taking money abroad, and having safety procedures in place will help ease the anxiety of being stranded without cash. The majority of prepaid currency cards see funds held on them directly, meaning that if the card is lost or stolen the funds are taken with the card. But Escape’s unique cloud account offers increased security by allowing funds to be transferred from the card back to the account at any time, keeping spending safe if something should happen to the card. Escape also offers a 24/7 helpline for immediate support and can arrange for funds to be sent to a Moneygram outlet, meaning travellers will never be stranded without access to money. In addition, users can also take advantage of a free SMS service, which can be used to temporarily lock and unlock the card, providing peace of mind if they’re going for a swim and leaving their card in a bag or hotel room.

Be discreet

It is easy to see how holidaymakers can draw attention to themselves rifling through the unfamiliar bank notes of another currency when making a payment. It’s best not to make a scene when doing this and carrying a prepaid currency card means it can be avoided altogether. We advise tourists to be aware of their surroundings when on holiday, and to make sure they take the necessary precautions to ensure that their trip goes off without a hitch.

*The Escape Travel Money Prepaid MasterCard costs £10 to purchase, the fee being refundable if the card is loaded with £100 within 30 days of application. It can be order online at www.escapetravelcard.com.

Average British family spends more than - two months’ salary on summer holidays

A SURVEY of more than 6,000 Brits reveals that the average household will spend a £1,025 for each person on a summer get-away this year. This figure equates to more than two months' pay, after tax, for a family of four based on the average national wage of £26,500.

The research, commissioned by HolidayExtras.com, also revealed that one in four Brits is comfortable paying an average of £2,000 each for their summer holiday.

On top of the cost of the holiday, a third of Brits spend an average of £376 while they are on holiday, with more than of it spent on food.

When asked what they look for first when choosing a summer holiday, one in four say they look for value, and to beat price hikes whenever possible.

Decline in resort costs cushions £ fall

WITH the end of the school term in sight, the challenge for families planning trips to the euro zone, will be how to get the most for their money and avoid busting their budget after sterling’s fall in value.

There is encouraging news for them in the Post Office Travel Money Family Holiday Report. This confirms that while resort prices are up on 2015 levels, when sterling was at a seven-year high, meals, drinks, and tourist items now cost less in several family favourites than in each year between 2011 and 2014.

Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money explains: ‘It’s all about putting today’s exchange rates into context. Sterling may have fallen recently, but when you compare its value with every other year since 2011 except 2015, holidaymakers can be reassured that the cash in their pockets will cover their costs – particularly as bars and restaurants in several of the resorts we surveyed have cut their prices to attract tourists.’

Families can expect to pay over a third less for a meal this summer than in 2011 in the Costa del Sol (£34.83 now compared to £53.92 in 2011) or Crete (£39.19 vs £58.82) and 40 percent less in Bulgaria (£27.83 vs £46.39).

Meal costs are lowest by far in Bulgaria. Families can expect to pay an average of £27.83 in Sunny Beach – 3.8 percent less than in last year’s record-breaking summer (£28.92).  The Algarve is another good bet for bargain hunters at £33.09 for a family meal. By contrast, holidaymakers visiting Sorrento (£87.09) and Ibiza (£100.15) will pay over twice as much as in Sunny Beach or the Algarve.

But Brown warned: ‘Keeping a tight rein on the holiday purse will still be crucial this summer and that is going to be a big challenge for many because our latest research found that only one-in-five families stuck to their budget on their last holiday.  The majority of families said they overspent by an average of over 25 percent – or £178 – on the £694 budget they set.

All-inclusive loses popularity as more UK families opt for self-catering

RESEARCH by Leeds Building Society has found that self-catering is the most popular choice for families, as they turn away from the traditional all-inclusive deal.

More than two-fifths of holiday-goers opt for self-catering, compared to less than one in five buying all-inclusive.

The survey uncovered a variety of trends when it came to travel habits and holiday finances, with 46% of people saying they spend more on family holidays compared to five years ago with the average spend on flights and accommodation alone topping £1,400, with the addition of £700 spending money.

Women were more likely to set a holiday budget, as well as decide where the family is going. However, men tend to spend more while travelling, with an average of £725 per holiday compared to £689 for women.

When it came to planning for their trip, a third of respondents plan six months or more ahead of their holiday, with women being more likely to do this than men.

The survey also asked about the biggest time wasters for travellers, with delayed flights being the most frequent at 54% and waiting for the luggage carousel coming second at 43%.

Holidaymakers rush to buy foreign currency as pound falters

AS the Leave camp pulls ahead in the EU Referendum polls, the pound is experiencing intense fluctuations, and holidaymakers are rushing to buy their summer holiday money.

HiFX reports that the number of holidaymakers buying euros this week is up by 35 percent on the same time last week.

Chris Towner, chief economist at HiFX, said: ‘We know that in the event of a Brexit, we’re likely to see a significant weakening of the pound, with many warning that a Leave vote could trigger a 15 to 20 per cent fall in its value.

‘We also know that if the UK votes to stay, the pound might recover some – or all – of the losses it has made in recent months. However, as the outlook is gearing stronger towards a victory for the Leave camp, those preparing to buy their holiday money for the summer need to weigh up the potential risks. Concerned travellers should hedge their bets by either buying some or all of their holiday money now, or by pre-loading a pre-paid currency card.’

Cost is king for UK families heading to the sun

THE OVERALL cost of a holiday is the most important factor for the majority of families, a survey by On the Beach has found.

The survey of 1,500 British families conducted by My Family Club on behalf of On the Beach found that almost a third (30%) say the cost of a holiday is more important than any other element. A travel agent or operator offering full financial protection was also rated very important.

Positive feedback from family and friends was important, with 18% saying testimonials from their peers was a major factor in their holiday choices.

The survey results also suggested that British families were becoming more adventurous with their holidays with more than half (55%), saying at least one of their holidays this year will be to a new destination, with one in five sticking to their favourite destination once again.

Alistair Daly, chief marketing officer at On the Beach comments: ‘For most families, the annual holiday is the biggest spend of the year, so the cost of that holiday is incredibly important. We're also seeing more families choosing all-inclusive holidays, which is a great choice for those wanting to keep a close eye on their spending.’

Record February for UK tourism

A NEW February record has been set for the number of international visits to the UK, up eight percent on the same month last year, visitor spending up six percent.

The Office for National Statistics figures show that 2.25 million visits were made in February 2016 with visitors spending £1.08 billion. Strong growth was seen in business visits, 12 percent up on the same month last year, with 750,000 visits.

The figures come on the back of a record-breaking January for in-bound visits.

VisitBritain director Patricia Yates said: ‘These back-to-back record-breaking figures leave no doubt that 2016 is off to a cracking start for in-bound tourism as we continue, through our international marketing campaigns, to promote Britain.’

Last year set a record for in-bound tourism to Britain with 35.8 million visits, four percent up on 2014.

Tourism is Britain’s seventh largest export industry and third largest service sector.

In-bound tourism is worth more than £26 billion to the UK economy.

The industry is also a major job creator; every 22 additional Chinese visitors who come to Britain create one additional job in the sector.

Fingerprints to replace currency for tourists visiting Japan

#JAPAN will soon introduce a hassle-free way of changing money with the launch of a system that will replace currency notes with fingerprints.

The government is planning to launch the system this summer.

Foreign visitors will need to register their details, which would include fingerprints and credit card information, at airports or other public verification locations. As registered tourists, they will then be able to buy products with taxes automatically deducted from selected stores by placing a finger on a reader device.

The fingerprint system will also be used as a substitute for presenting passports when checking into hotels, which is currently a legal obligation for overseas tourists.

In its first test phase, the project will involve 300 souvenir shops, restaurants, hotels, and other establishments used by tourists.

The fingerprint experiment is part of a wider effort by the Japanese government to encourage visitors from overseas to visit the capital in the run up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Officials are hoping to launch the system throughout the country – including Tokyo – by 2020, with as many as 40 million overseas annual visitors expected by that year.

The new system will also enable the government to analyse the spending habits of foreign tourists, with anonymous data managed by a government-led consultative body. The data obtained from the project will be used to help government officials create effective tourism management policies.

But one concern among officials is that some tourists might be reluctant to provide fingerprint information voluntarily due to fears relating to privacy issues.

In-bound tourism figures reach record levels

INBOUND tourism figures to the UK reached record levels last year, with 35.8 million visits. This represented a 4% rise on 2014 and the sixth consecutive year of growth. Since 2010, the number of visits has jumped 20%.

Meanwhile, visitor spend for 2015 was £21.8 billion, in line with 2014's record- breaking figure.

VisitBritain director Patricia Yates said: ‘This growth is fantastic news for the UK economy and shows we're on track to realise our ambition to grow international visits by more than 20% to 42 million by 2020, which could see an additional £4.5 billion in visitor spend, as well as driving tourism across all our nations and regions, so its benefits are felt across the whole of Britain.’

Latest forecasts from VisitBritain show that growth in visitor numbers is set to continue this year, with 36.7 million visits expected in 2016.

Despite the strength of sterling, spending by overseas visitors is predicted to climb to almost £23 billion this year.

In 2015, visits from North America showed growth of 8% last year compared to 2014, with 3.9 million visits. It was a record year for visits from European Union countries, with a 2% increase on 2014 to 19.9 million visits.

October record for international visits to UK

THE NUMBER of international visits to the UK has continued to set new records, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics.

There were almost 3.4 million international visits in October this year, a 12% increase compared to the same month in 2014.

Overall, in the 10-months of the year-to-date, the number of overseas visits was 30.5 million, 4% higher than for the same period last year, indicating that this year is firmly on track to be another record-breaker for overseas visits to Britain.

Foreign tourists also spent 9% more in October than they did in the same month last year, spending close to £2 billion and setting a new record. Overall, spending by visitors for the first 10-months of 2015 was £18.4 billion.

Another record for October was the 14% increase in visits from the EU15 markets, the UK’s largest visit-generating region, with 1.9 million tourists. In the 10-months to date there were close to 17 million visits from these markets, a 2% increase on the same period in 2014.

Visits from North America – Canada and the US – were up by 7% in the year-to-date.

VisitBritain Director Patricia Yates said: ‘It’s really encouraging to see the increases in visits and spend for October, particularly coming on the back of the Rugby World Cup (RWC). We’re working hard to drive tourism across all our nations and regions and with almost half a million international visitors having attended RWC matches and events across 11 host cities, including places which wouldn’t necessarily be on the immediate radar for many overseas visitors, we can be confident that the economic benefits from October’s record results are being felt across many of our regions.’

Spend expectations are increasing, Spain comes out on top … and Brits just can’t do without a cuppa

UK HOLIDAYMAKERS are expected to flash the cash in 2016, with most of the spend occurring in European destinations, according to research compiled by My Travel Cash.

Twenty-three percent of those surveyed said they expect to spend more on holidays next year, a three percent rise on 2014, when 20 percent of UK holidaymakers were prepared to increase their holiday budgets for 2015.

Spain proved to be the most popular holiday destination of 2015, followed by France and Italy.

Ian Johnson, sales director at my Travel Cash, says: ‘We wanted to get an insight into holiday trends, which is why we have analysed all of our data and research from the past year. While some people may have been wary about travelling last year, we’re happy to report that this hasn’t deterred Brits from taking holidays. Spending abroad increased by 13 percent in 2015, and more people are committing to learning new languages … this suggests a positive outlook for 2016.’

Despite the growing willingness of Brits to spend more abroad, they still rely on home comforts bought before they travel. Sixty-four percent of holidaymakers admit to taking their own tea or coffee with them on holiday, 12 percent taking lavatory roll and four percent packing even a pot of Marmite.

The ten most popular holiday destinations in Europe for Brits, according to data from My Travel Cash:

1.     Spain
2.     France
3.     Italy
4.     Portugal
5.     Greece
6.     Ireland
7.     Germany
8.     UK
9.     Netherlands
10.   Cyprus

Holidaymakers cut travel budgets

UK HOLIDAYMAKERS show no signs of increasing spending, with the First Rate Holiday Confidence Index reporting ‘clear evidence that consumers are tightening their belts’.

The Winter 2015 Confidence Index reports year-on-year falls across three holiday-spending measures – the cost of booking, the amount of money consumers plan to take abroad, and their spending in destination, with two point declines in each.

First Rate suggests this confirms ‘holidaymakers are restricting their budgets’, although two of the three indices are one point higher than in the summer.

More than half of those planning to travel overseas plan to spend no more on booking than in the past year, while 60% said they would not spend more in destination.

The results are disappointing in the light of recent figures showing average wages rising, while UK inflation was flat in September.

The report on the index also identifies ‘lingering doubts’ about the extent of the recovery in the UK economy and household finances, with a four-point fall to 29% in adults confident of further improvement in the economy. It reports a one-point drop to 23% in those expecting their personal finances to improve.

Alistair Rennie, head of strategy and innovation at First Rate Exchange Services, said: ‘Travel firms would obviously like to see the amount spent on bookings moving upwards. Disappointingly, there is nothing to suggest this is happening. Commitment-free 25 to 34-year-olds are the exception.’

Sterling's strength boosts UK travellers' Xmas markets spending power

THE INCREASED purchasing power of the pound against the euro and other European currencies is giving British travellers up to 13% more spending power this winter over last year.

The calculation comes from the latest analysis by Post Office Travel Money which identified #Budapest as the best value for a #Christmasmarkets break.

At £405 for a weekend break for two – comprising return flights, B&B accommodation, airport-city centre transfers, two evening meals for two with wine, coffee, festive drinks and snacks at the Christmas Markets – Budapest has overtaken its Eastern European rivals to become this year’s bargain choice.

This makes the Hungarian capital more than a third cheaper than Vienna (£653), the highest-priced city surveyed.

However, Prague remains cheapest of 12 Christmas Market favourites when it comes to meals, snacks and drinks for a two-day break, as well as travel to and from the airport. At under £72 for these items, Prague is 11.7% cheaper than Budapest and prices are almost two-thirds lower than in Stockholm (£207). When accommodation and flights are added to the barometer, Prague come second to Budapest with a total cost of £458.

The good value available to UK visitors has been boosted by sterling starting to rise in value against European currencies in the past two weeks. The strong pound means visitors to all 12 of the cities surveyed will have greater spending power than last year – almost 12% more in eurozone destinations, rising to 13.7% extra in Budapest.

Foreign spend in Britain booms

INTERNATIONAL visitors have spent an extra £2.5 billion in Britain during the last four years, says VisitBritain.

This beats the target set for it by the UK Government in 2011 by more than half a billion pounds, and means that every £1 invested in VisitBritain’s activities has resulted in an overseas visitor spending £21.

VisitBritain has delivered an additional £630 million, thanks to its role as a partner in the cross-UK Government GREAT campaign.

Overall inbound tourism, Britain’s third largest service export and one of its fastest-growing, was worth more than £26 billion to the UK economy in 2013. The industry is also a major job creator; every 22 additional Chinese visitors create an additional job in the sector.
