UK holiday makers set to opt for all-inclusive

A new research study highlighting the key consumer trends in the UK holiday market has been added to the vast repository of Market Research Hub (MRH). The report offers holistic analysis on major factors that are shaping the holiday market in the UK.

On account of the growing inflationary pressures, UK consumers are likely to opt for those deals that offer all-inclusive packages. The preference for all-inclusive deals is likely to increase during the summers, as a high percentage of consumers are expected to focus on reducing expenditure on foreign travel. The pressures on consumer spending are also likely to result into a preference for those destinations that are cheaper to visit.

All-inclusive loses popularity as more UK families opt for self-catering

RESEARCH by Leeds Building Society has found that self-catering is the most popular choice for families, as they turn away from the traditional all-inclusive deal.

More than two-fifths of holiday-goers opt for self-catering, compared to less than one in five buying all-inclusive.

The survey uncovered a variety of trends when it came to travel habits and holiday finances, with 46% of people saying they spend more on family holidays compared to five years ago with the average spend on flights and accommodation alone topping £1,400, with the addition of £700 spending money.

Women were more likely to set a holiday budget, as well as decide where the family is going. However, men tend to spend more while travelling, with an average of £725 per holiday compared to £689 for women.

When it came to planning for their trip, a third of respondents plan six months or more ahead of their holiday, with women being more likely to do this than men.

The survey also asked about the biggest time wasters for travellers, with delayed flights being the most frequent at 54% and waiting for the luggage carousel coming second at 43%.

Cuba & Cape Verde tipped as Sharm and Tunisia alternatives

ALL-INCLUSIVE
#destinations such as #Cuba and #CapeVerde have been tipped as being among the 2016 alternatives to Sharm el-Sheikh and Tunisia, where flights bans exist.

The predictions come from the analysis of millions of flight searches on Skyscanner from the last three years, combined with qualitative research carried out by the company’s travel experts.

The top five hot spots for 2016, based on the percentage increase in searches from the UK over the last three years, are:

Ponta Delgada, the Azores
With more airlines flying to the Azores, including Ryanair’s new weekly flight from Stansted to Ponta Delgada, this autonomous region of Portugal is opening up as a viable budget travel destination.

Havana, Cuba
Cuba is back on the world stage as the US restored diplomatic relations in July and continues to loosen restrictions on trade. There might be flights from the US and US hotel chains opening in Cuba in 2016 if more restrictions are lifted. Many people are booking to travel to Cuba to experience the country before it changes –or starts to resemble Miami – and before prices rise as a result.

Tokyo, Japan
Tourism has boomed under the current administration. The national tourist board is actively targeting niche UK markets by focusing on ski, honeymoon, and adventure tourism offerings. Thanks to the excellent value Japan Rail Passes and Airbnb-type accommodation, Tokyo is now 50% cheaper for UK travellers than in 2013, according to the Post Office’s long haul report.

    Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen is a popular choice for culture vultures and foodies. Home to the five-month long Tivoli Festival (May to September), classical music fans can expect a star-studded line-up at the Tivoli Gardens. The Copenhagen cooking festival takes place in February showcasing increasingly popular Nordic cuisine, whilst fashionistas have Copenhagen’s Fashion Week, the largest of its kind in Northern Europe.

      Sal, Cape Verde
With unspoilt beaches, the island of Sal is only just emerging as a tourist destination. Thomson Airways is adding a new route from Bristol in summer 2016. Sal is also a base for exploring the rest of the archipelago, from the canyons, gorges, and valleys of Santo Antao to the Sahara-like dunes of Boa Vista.

Skyscanner travel editor, Cat McGloin, said: ‘With 50 million searches to the site every month from all over the world, our search data gives us some really robust insight in to these trends. It’s interesting to see how people’s travel interests are changing and what these destinations are offering to become even more appealing.’

Family holidays: Self-catering or all-inclusive? By Katie McGonagle

PARENTS devote much time to teaching their offspring how to act in all sorts of different situations. Racing around at full speed might be fine for the park or the playground, but not for their grandmother’s living room. And the way they chat with friends probably isn’t the way they should talk to their teachers.

As in all things, context is key, so why not remind parents of that lesson next time they come in to book a holiday? While one country might lend itself to an all-inclusive resort-based break, others are suited to getting out and about, so a self-catering stay will be a better fit.

Orlando: Any worries about fussy eaters not finding food they like can be laid to rest across the pond. With plenty of reasonably priced, familiar, and child-friendly options, going #self-catering in the #US is a no-brainer.

Most hotels offer room-only rates with the option to add breakfast at a supplement, but the abundance of apartments and villa-style accommodation in popular family resorts such as Orlando also fits the self-catering model well. Guests can then mix and match between home cooking – many villas come equipped with a kitchen and outdoor barbecue grill – and eating out. There’s certainly no shortage of family-friendly restaurants, stretching far beyond our familiar fast-food joints to encompass the myriad cuisines of the US’s multi-cultural population.

Eating out is also much more affordable in the US than it is in Britain, so it shouldn’t break the bank to dine out with the family each night, but generous tipping – 20% – is expected.

Italy: While some short-haul favourites such as Spain and Portugal have embraced the all-inclusive model, family-oriented Italy remains resolutely outside that bracket, with only the occasional all-inclusive property in some of its beach resorts. That leaves families free to explore the local food scene, and with familiar flavours and easily recognizable dishes sure to appear on every menu – no matter how un-touristy the eatery – it shouldn’t pose major problems.

John Escott, sales manager at Al Fresco Holidays, says: ‘Self-catering holidays in #Italy are easy when it comes to fussy eaters: kids know Italian food well, with pizza and pasta being firm favourites, which makes dining out less daunting. All of our parks in Italy have an on-site shop located conveniently for guests to pick up essentials or to provide the entire family meal. Each Al Fresco Holidays mobile homes comes with an easy-to-use kitchen and its own barbecue.’

Al Fresco has 18 parks across Italy.

Turkey: When a family asks for a Turkish holiday, it’s easy to steer them automatically towards an #all-inclusive resort along the coastline, many boasting water parks and sports facilities on top of a great-value dining and drinks package.

Yet that’s not the only family option. Parents who don’t want to be tied to the resort at every meal time will find Turkey’s relaxed coastal towns awash with cafes and restaurants serving good-value local bites, with a chance to browse through the shops and soak up the local vibe.

There shouldn’t be anything too challenging for younger palates, with plenty of grilled meats, dips, and pitta breads meaning picky eaters will always find something they can rely on.

Red Sea: ‘With the majority of properties in Sharm El Sheikh all-inclusive, it makes sense to book an all-in holiday and benefit from the exceptional prices available,’ says Olympic Holidays commercial director Photis Lambrianides. ‘Couple that with the fact that as Sharm covers a long stretch of the coast, individual properties can be a fair way from bars and restaurants, and it’s far simpler to eat and drink in the resort.’

Barbados: The Caribbean has long been known as a haven for all-inclusive escapes, pioneering the concept of mega-resorts where guests need never step outside the grounds unless they want to explore. That’s just as true today, with family-focused, all-inclusive properties dotted across the islands, including hugely popular brands such as Beaches on Jamaica and the Turks and Caicos Islands; Club Med in the Dominican Republic, Bahamas, and the French Caribbean; or AMResorts’ family brands Now and Sunscape in Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Curacao.

Easygoing Barbados is no stranger to the all-inclusive concept. Despite having a reputation for great local dining, its relaxed beachfront properties are all about hassle-free holidays, with no need to head out in search of dinner each evening.

Elegant Hotels’ all-inclusive Turtle Beach and Crystal Cove properties offer a premium all-inclusive package, factoring all meals, drinks and snacks, daily afternoon tea, water sports, and kids’ activities into the cost. With Turtle Beach’s family activities this season including cinema under the stars, beach football, treasure hunts around the hotel, and weekly pastry classes run by dessert chef Ezra Beckles, the food and drink isn’t the only highlight of an all-inclusive stay.

Cyprus: ‘Everyone wants all-inclusive these days,’ according to Theodoros Frangos, general manager of the Olympic Lagoon Resort Paphos. ‘We are going back to the original idea of all-inclusive – it doesn’t necessarily mean cheap holidays. It offers the facility of having everything there, but the biggest advantage is that people know what they will spend, so there are no surprises.”

The all-inclusive trend is echoed across other new properties on the island, such as the 250-room King Evelthon Beach Hotel and Resort, which opened last year by the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos, and has an all-inclusive package covering themed dinners, snacks, ice cream, and local alcoholic drinks, and the re-branded Sensatori Resort Aphrodite Hills, both well set up for children.

Families prefer all-inclusive holidays, finds poll

MORE than three quarters of UK families had a package holiday this year, with all-inclusives being the most popular type of break.

Almost a third of people polled by Holiday Hypermarket said all-inclusive holidays were their preferred choice of trip. Self-catering breaks came next (26.8%), followed by half board at 16.40%.

Marketing manager at Holiday Hypermarket, Ian Crawford, said: ‘Travelling with children can be complicated enough, so having someone take care of important details such as transfers is reassuring.’

The popularity of the package is backed up by the Office for National Statistics, which has reported that the number of Britons taking package holidays abroad is on the increase – from 15.3 million in 2013 to 15.9 million last year.

Brits take to cruises

RESEARCH that shows a quarter of Brits have been on a cruise holiday, while a further 40% have not but are interested in booking one, says the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).

The report found that #cruises are an increasingly popular holiday option. In the last 12 months, one in ten people who have been on holiday took a cruise, an increase from 7% in 2014. This steady growth looks set to continue with 13% of people stating that they are planning a cruise holiday in the next 12 months.

Part of the growth of #cruiseholidays can be attributed to returning passengers; 80% of people who have been on a cruise stated that they would like to go again. For people who have been on a cruise, the chance to see multiple destinations tops the list of things they value about cruise holidays, with the on-board facilities, including catering, entertainment, and accommodation also highly rated.

ABTA chief executive Mark Tanzer commented: ‘In recent years the cruise market has expanded outside the traditional Mediterranean and Caribbean destinations and now offers an incredible variety of voyages, including Scandinavian cruises, Arctic cruises and European river cruises.’

Responsible holidays to Spain on the increase, as Canaries warn against ‘Magaluf Effect’

AS the new president of the Canaries warns of the dangers of mass tourism for the islands, holiday enquiries by Responsible Travel customers show that interest in the responsible side of #Spain is growing.

It was reported in June that Magaluf’s plans to introduce new laws and fines to control anti-social tourist behaviour had failed to make an impact in ‘cleaning up’ the resort’s image. And the new president of the #CanaryIslands, Fernando Clavijo, has suggested recently that tourist numbers should be capped and that the rising number of cheap, all-inclusive packages should be controlled in order to prevent what he calls the ‘Magaluf Effect’.

Justin Francis, managing director of Responsible Travel comments: ‘There is clearly an increasing interest among travellers to escape the mass tourism of Spain’s more notorious holiday resorts and discover something more authentic, more responsible … in essence, something more Spanish.

‘And with places such as Magaluf trying, and so far failing to crack down on the irresponsible behaviour of the tourists they attract, we are thrilled to see that alternative holiday experiences in Spain, which place real value on local culture and identity and which share the benefits of tourism with local people, are gaining in popularity.’

All-inclusive savings? They’re a myth!

RESEARCH by the Post Office debunks the idea that holidaymakers spend less staying in #all-inclusive resorts because they save on the cost of drinks and eating out. More than two-thirds of families spent an average of £233 extra on meals and drinks away from their hotel on their last European all-inclusive holiday.

Almost seven-in-ten parents paid for meals in local resort restaurants at an average cost of £62. The extra money spent means many families could pay between 10-15% on top of their all-inclusive package.

More than four-in-five parents said they expected all meals to be included in their package. Yet almost a quarter of them paid extra for these in their resort, spending an average of almost £54 extra on meals on top of their paid-for package.

Two-in-five of those surveyed said they spent an average of £43 on international brands of alcohol, a third spent £44 on bottles of wine, 37% spent almost £27 on bottled water, and three-in-ten paid £41 extra for cocktails.

Andrew Brown, at Post Office Travel Money, said: ‘Over the past four years, our annual research has consistently shown that European all-inclusive resorts offer less than holidaymakers expect, so it is important for families to be aware of what is included in their package to avoid getting caught out. If you have already booked an all-inclusive holiday, budget carefully and allow for the extra costs you are likely to incur.

‘On the plus side, the powerful pound means that all-inclusive holidaymakers who want to get a real flavour of their holiday destination can eat and drink in local restaurants and bars more cheaply this year.’
