Highs and lows: best time to visit The Dominican Republic

WITH the United States’ high season for travel being the Dominican Republic’s low season, the Dominican Republic should definitely be a destination on your list. The diamond white beaches and exotic resorts from Punta Cana to La Romana attract millions of sun lovers every year. The amazing landscape and vegetation are uniquely preserved and pleasing to the eye. But with all the fanfare and multitude of tourists that flock into the country each year, it would be nice to note the importance of timing.

High tourist season runs from mid-December through mid-March—expect higher rates during this time. This is a natural economic principle, ‘the higher the demand, the higher the price. Loads of tourists visit The Dominican Republic at this time of year to bask in the warm weather, so expect your accommodations to be hard to come by and even expensive.

The low tourist season April- August brings with it attractive airfare and slashed hotel rates. Apparently, due to peak season rush decline, this is when the tourists trickle out of the city. It’s usually around now that the temperatures are at their highest (with average highs around 800 F). You’ll, therefore, save a considerable amount of money and have an easier time booking a hotel room on the spot. The bars and beaches are not as crowded during these times, making for a more relaxing and enjoyable time.

More to explore in the Domican Republic

NAGUA is the capital of the province Maria Trinidad Sánchez of the #DominicanRepublic. A medium-sized city, Nagua’s economy relies mainly on the production of agricultural products, mainly: rice, coconuts, vegetables, tubers and cocoa.  Located on the northeast coast of the Samaná peninsula, #Nagua is on the road that leads from Puerto Plata to the city of Samaná.  The beaches, land, and tourism are untouched.

About 30 minutes from Nagua, is a small town called Cabrera. There you will find Dudu Lagoon, and within Dudu Lagoon is Azul Lagoon. The zip-line into the water, that everyone loves on those super hot days of the Dominican Summer, can be found at Dudu Lagoon. At Lago Azul The water is clear and is located in a cave that is open to the public for swimming. There you will find large rocks you can jump off of, and bring your snorkel equipment because it is a wonder for the eye to see.

Diamond beach is known as the beach with no waves and is about 30 minutes away from Nagua, and only minutes from Dudu Lagoon. Among the things to do in Nagua, it’s at the top. It is a local beach, down a bumpy winding road, and you will not find 5 star amenities there.

Playa Los Minos is a local beach, where not many tourist go, but the best part is that it’s not crowded with locals. Sand and rock mix on the shores and the sides to provide a view that resembles the beaches of Greece in some spots. Very calm waters, are accompanied by warm waters, and natural sands. A local hotel ran by Italians is placed on the rocky shore, and is a great place to stop for a beer. The owners are around 90, and their charm gives an old school look to a beautiful little beach.

Whale watching in the Dominican Republic

JANUARY through March, thousands of Humpback Whales migrate from the polar North Atlantic to the northeastern peninsula of the #DominicanRepublic. Visitors to Punta Cana can now see this amazing natural phenomenon with two different #Whale watching #excursion options to choose from.

Samana Bay has long been the home of one of the largest and most important Humpback breeding grounds in the world. Large pods of whales make their way to the warm waters of the Caribbean to compete for mates and birth their calves. With around 300 whales present in the Bay at anytime during these winter months this is what has earned the Samana Bay the classification as one of the top Whale watching destinations in the world.

Due to strict regulations protecting the whales, the only way to get a glimpse of these magnificent creatures is through an authorized whale watching tour.

  • Private Plane Excursion, which in addition to whale watching, includes a bonus visit to the renowned Limon Waterfall.
  • Whale Watching tours by bus, which travels along the recently constructed Uvero Alto - Miches Highway.

Both excursions include a visit to the beautiful island of Cayo Levantado.

Thomson gives pregnant women option to avoid Zika-hit countries

#THOMSON has offering pregnant women travelling to a number of countries hit by the #Zikavirus to amend their booking free of charge. It will offer free amendments to pregnant women due to travel on charter packages to Zika-infected countries before April 30. Women who have a doctor's note confirming their pregnancy can switch to another destination up to October 31 this year.

Its offer is available to women travelling to Mexico, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Cape Verde, Panama, Colombia, and Martinique.

The decision comes as the World Health Organisation announced it was setting up a Zika emergency team to fight the virus, which has been linked to thousands of babies being born with small brains in Brazil and has now spread to more than 20 countries in the region.
