Ultimate travel adventure

INSPIRED
by five of David Attenborough’s most popular TV series, eShores have created the ultimate wildlife-lover’s holiday. Using locations from both series from Planet Earth and Blue Planet, plus the single series of Frozen Planet, we’ve retraced as many of Attenborough’s steps as possible to to create the #travel adventure of a lifetime.

To emulate the feats of Attenborough and his team from each episode of the five series, you’d have to embark on 175 flights across the world over at least 1034 days, along with several car journeys and a train journey across Siberian Russia.

Totalling £402,220 and lasting at almost 3 years (1034 days), the complete journey also includes several excursions to re-enact the adventures in the series as closely as possible. Included is a trip to Mount Everest from episode one of Planet Earth and an eight-day dogsledding expedition in Greenland, as seen in episode one of Frozen Planet.

Whale of a celebration

CHANNEL Islands Harbor, USA celebrates the migration of the Pacific Gray Whale with its Annual Celebration of the Whales. Each winter, these enchanting whales migrate through the Santa Barbara Channel on their way to the lagoons of Mexico, where the females will give birth.

Whale watching excursions to the Channel Islands National Park are offered daily from Channel Islands Harbor and provide sightseers the best opportunities for viewing the whales, which are up to 50 feet long and weigh approximately 36 tons, as they travel south. Extreme tourism a threat to Machu Picchu?

WITH over 1.3 Million visitors per year, #MachuPicchu is under tremendous environmental pressure. UNESCO had listed Machu Picchu among sites at risk due to extreme tourism along with another 54 sites around the world but after extensive structure work to better protect the Machu Picchu Sanctuary, UNESCO removed Machu Picchu from the endangered heritage list.

To protect the sanctuary, some of the upcoming changes include time limits at specific points, morning and afternoon shifts and certified guides requirement to enter the site. The restructuring looks to restore and integrate long-overlooked Inca trail, terraces and ceremonial ruins.

A new bridge joining the town of Machu Picchu and Machu Picchu Archaeological Park opened December 29th, 2016 for tourist visiting the ruins. The new structured will be named the Ruinas Bridge and expands over 150 feet above the Rio Alcamayo.

Whale watching in the Dominican Republic

JANUARY through March, thousands of Humpback Whales migrate from the polar North Atlantic to the northeastern peninsula of the #DominicanRepublic. Visitors to Punta Cana can now see this amazing natural phenomenon with two different #Whale watching #excursion options to choose from.

Samana Bay has long been the home of one of the largest and most important Humpback breeding grounds in the world. Large pods of whales make their way to the warm waters of the Caribbean to compete for mates and birth their calves. With around 300 whales present in the Bay at anytime during these winter months this is what has earned the Samana Bay the classification as one of the top Whale watching destinations in the world.

Due to strict regulations protecting the whales, the only way to get a glimpse of these magnificent creatures is through an authorized whale watching tour.

  • Private Plane Excursion, which in addition to whale watching, includes a bonus visit to the renowned Limon Waterfall.
  • Whale Watching tours by bus, which travels along the recently constructed Uvero Alto - Miches Highway.

Both excursions include a visit to the beautiful island of Cayo Levantado.

NZ – where the wildlife is unique

FOR travellers in search of an alternative #wildlife experience and the chance to spot some of the most unusual species, #NewZealand could be the answer. The country is home to some of the world’s rarest indigenous creatures, and offers plenty of wildlife opportunities for visitors year-round – from the fjords of the South Island to the beaches of the North Island’s sunny east coast.

PENGUINS – Penguins can be found on the cooler fringes, including Akaroa, Stewart Island, and Marlborough Sounds. The South Island’s west coast is home to one of the world’s rarest penguins – the Fiordland crested, known for its unique yellow eyebrow-stripe extending over the eyes and down the neck.

DOLPHINS –From the tiny Hector’s dolphin to the compact common dolphin and the sleek grey bottlenose, New Zealand’s coastlines are home to a wide range of dolphins. Head to the Queen Charlotte, Kenepuru, and Pelorus Sounds, at the top of the South Island.

WHALES –Kaikoura in the South Island is an iconic destination for those wanting to catch a glimpse of these incredible animals.

ALBATROSS COLONY – David Attenborough described the Otago Peninsula as ‘a very special place’ and it’s not hard to see why. These majestic seabirds can be seen at the world’s only mainland breeding albatross colony at Taiaroa Head in the South Island. With a wingspan of more than nine feet and soaring at speeds of up to 75 mph, they are not to be missed!

KIWI – For such a well-known NZ icon, the kiwi can be surprisingly elusive. These shy, nocturnal birds are endangered and threatened by predators such as dogs, cats, and stoats, so seeing them in the wild is a rare occurrence. Stewart Island, off the bottom of the South Island, is one of the best places to spot kiwi in their native habitat.

TUATARA – The Tuatara is a unique relic of the past and dates back to dinosaur days. They are the only beak-headed reptile left in the world, and they call New Zealand home. Every species of this reptile family except the tuatara died out approximately 65 million years ago, making it one of the rarest wildlife spots in the country. Tuatara can live for more than 100 years and are found only in the wild on protected offshore islands. Head to Stephens Island in the Marlborough Sounds or the wildlife safe haven of Zealandia near Wellington.

New Zealand in Depth has launched a 28-night NZ Self-Drive Bird & Nature Tour created by the country’s wildlife and travel experts. From £6,500 per person, the package includes transfers, accommodation in boutique hotels and luxury lodges, car hire, breakfast and some dinners, a tour director and wildlife activities and excursions.

Where to swim with the pigs

HOLIDAYMAKERS in the #Bahamas can swim with pigs off the coast of the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay, which is home to these unusual creatures.

The pigs are feral, yet friendly, running from under the shade of almond trees to greet tourists who bring them treats. They've also learned that crews from passing yachts dump excess food in the sea for them as well.

The pigs live freely on the sandy beaches and after basking in the sun for hours, swim in the surf. How the pigs came to be on the island isn’t known. They aren’t native, and the island has been inhabited.

Popular lore suggests that the pigs were dropped off by sailors who wanted to return to cook them, or that there was a shipwreck and the pigs swam to safety. But now there are approximately 20 of them, able to survive thanks to the island’s freshwater springs and the Bahamians and tourists who feed them.

Excursion boats to Big Major Cay run from the main Exuma islands, 35 miles south-east of Nassau.
