Whale of a celebration

CHANNEL Islands Harbor, USA celebrates the migration of the Pacific Gray Whale with its Annual Celebration of the Whales. Each winter, these enchanting whales migrate through the Santa Barbara Channel on their way to the lagoons of Mexico, where the females will give birth. 

Whale watching excursions to the Channel Islands National Park are offered daily from Channel Islands Harbor and provide sightseers the best opportunities for viewing the whales, which are up to 50 feet long and weigh approximately 36 tons, as they travel south. Excursions begin January 5 and run through mid-April 2018.

Under the sea

THE Gottesman Family Israel Aquarium Jerusalem are now running preview tours of the new aquarium before it is officially open to the general public on a daily basis. The preview tours are suitable for adults and children aged 5 and older and last for around 90 minutes. The tours are available multiple times a week in English, Hebrew and Arabic.

These tours offer participants not only a chance to see the fish already inhabiting the pools at the aquarium but also a “behind-the-scenes” look at running of the aquarium that will not be available to the general public without an additional cost once the aquarium is fully operational.

The 6,000 square-meter aquarium will feature dozens of tanks of varying sizes, showcasing thousands of Israel’s fish and marine creatures from the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and the Sea of Galilee. The Israel Aquarium is the world’s only aquarium dealing with the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, and one of the main goals is to bring awareness to the urgent need for maintaining and protecting the sea fish, coral, mammals and other animals in the surrounding waters.

Cayman Islands: Stingray City

THE Cayman Islands encompass 3 islands in the western Caribbean Sea with its largest island Grand Cayman popular for its exquisite beach resorts, varied scuba diving, and snorkeling sites, tourists are spoilt for choice. Sea Life Blackpool dives into yearly fish stocktake

SEA LIFE BLACKPOOL reports that it now has 2,623 creatures and 154 species, following its annual stocktake.

The count takes place over four weeks from December to January and involves each fish being counted three times by different members of staff to ensure the tally is accurate.

General Manager of #SEALIFE #Blackpool, Rachel Sipes, says: ‘Our stocktake is one of the most exciting occasions of the year for staff and helps us to understand how our population is growing and to keep track of the location of our inhabitants.

 ‘We’re pleased with the growth over the past year, when we have welcomed 671 more fish to our tanks. More than 100 babies were born here in 2015, including sharks, rays, and seahorses.’

On Blackpool’s seafront promenade, SEA LIFE Blackpool has been welcoming guests for more than 20 years. Visitors can learn how they can help to protect species living underwater near and far, with more than 50 displays and 2,000 aquatic creatures.

SEA LIFE is actively involved in conservation, research, and rescue projects, and believes that raising awareness of the importance of safeguarding the oceans and their inhabitants is one of its major priorities.
