Blackpool – More overnight stays as visitors happier

VISITORS to #Blackpool are staying longer and are happier with their #holiday, according to the latest Omnibus survey for the first four months of the year. More than two million adults visited the resort between January and April.

While the overall total of visits is roughly in line with 2015, there has been a dramatic increase in the ratio of staying visitors. More than 50% of those two million-plus visits included an overnight stay, up from 36% last year – the highest proportion of overnight stays since 2011.

Visitor satisfaction ratings with the resort increased, too, with 87% of visitors saying that they enjoyed their stay in the town – up from 79% over the same period last year.

Early indicators also show businesses enjoying a bumper month for trading in May, particularly during the school half term holidays, making up for the wet Easter holidays.

Sales of the Blackpool Resort Pass also jumped, with more than 2,000 sold between January and April, while the number of unique visitors to the Visit Blackpool website broke records again, with 339,000 people visiting the site in the first four months of the year.

In-bound rail passengers to the resort increased by 10%, while the number of tram passengers rose to more than one million between January and April.

Visitors surveyed cited the town’s coastal location and the Pleasure Beach theme park as their two top reasons for visiting the resort in the spring months.

In total, visitors to Blackpool contribute £1.33 billion to the local economy, supporting some 24,000 jobs.

Dazzling displays

VISITORS to #Blackpool will see a dazzling autumn celebration of light again with the return of the LightPool At Blackpool #Illuminations show.

The £2 million LightPool programme returns for a second year at the start of September with new 3D projection shows on to the Blackpool Tower buildings and a week-long festival of light throughout the town centre during the October half-term holiday.

Councillor Gillian Campbell, deputy leader of Blackpool Council, says: ‘Last year’s LightPool events were a big hit, with people coming from across the country to watch the stunning projection shows and the spectacular performances in the town centre. This year’s programme promises to be bigger and brighter than before and should be a wonderful addition to the Illuminations.

‘We are working with experts from all over the world to make LightPool a visual feast for families, as well as making sure that it is all free to enjoy.’

Blackpool Illuminations will light up from September 2 to November 6, with the World Fireworks Championships firing off from North Pier every Friday for four weeks from September 9.

Good news for tram spotters – they’re back on track in the UK

THERE was a time trams were a familiar sight on Britain’s streets. From Dover and Brighton to London, Birmingham, and Edinburgh, these ‘iron horses’ clanked along offering a sometimes uncomfortable means of getting around.

One by one the tram routes disappeared; some in the 1930’s and London’s in the early 1950’s. Petrol buses were quieter and more comfortable. But now, pollution and congestion are problems, and there’s growing pressures for tramways to be re-instated. In the late 1980’s, commuters in Croydon, south of London, were using tramways. Manchester followed in 1992. The Manchester Metrolink carried 31.2 million passengers in 2014/15 and covers 57 miles over seven different routes including the airport, and stopping at 93 stations.

Blackpool’s seafront tramway continued to operate, but it was old and expensive to maintain. The town now has a fleet of modern, German (Bombardier) trams with an upgraded 11.5-mile track. The trams are classed as a light railway and attract thousands of holidaymakers, although during the summer and for the autumn Illuminations, the original Heritage trams are rolled out. The vintage trams – one is over 100 years old – are maintained by a team of six engineers working for Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours. The trams are operated by a team of volunteers, many of whom are former drivers and conductors.

Further north, Edinburgh has realised the value of reducing noise and congestion by recently introducing a modern tramway 8.7 miles in length from York Place (east of Waverley) to Edinburgh Airport, with 15 stations.

The original Edinburgh tramway ran from 1871 until 1956, but in the 1990’s proposals were put forward to create a new, modern tramway. By completion – and many false starts on the way – the finished system is estimated to have cost £521 million, but is already carrying 4.9 million passengers annually.

Edinburgh’s tramway uses a combination of segregated off-road track and street-running, with cobbles used in some places – much to the consternation of cyclists – to identify the tramway.

Across Europe, trams are a familiar sight in countries such as Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. But now that British cities are realizing the full potential of trams in reducing city centre congestion and pollution, it is both locals and tourists who are taking advantage of modern, quiet ‘iron horses’ to get around and see the sights.

Blackpool rocks for affluent Brits

A TWO-YEAR campaign to shift perceptions of #Blackpool has resulted in an increase in affluent tourists who want to visit the seaside town.

The local tourist board launched the Blackpool's Back campaign in 2014, re-positioning it as a family resort, highlighting its world-renowned attractions.

Among ABC1 respondents who have seen the campaigns advertisements, 65% in the north and 67% in Scotland would consider a visit to Blackpool, compared to 51% and 44% respectively who hadn't. Visitor satisfaction rates are on the increase for the second year running, from 89% in 2014 to 93% in 2015 (84% 2013).

Summer 2015 saw the resort record the highest visitor figures in August for three years.

A revamped #Blackpoolhasitall campaign will run for a third year in 2016, with TV advertisements in Scotland and the north of England.

Head of the Blackpool Cluster for Merlin Entertainments, Kate Shane, said: ‘Now we've successfully shown that Blackpool is definitely back, we're ready to show that Blackpool has it all, too. There are lots of exciting developments this time around to encourage even more parents to come and share their own childhood memories, or create new ones together."

Statistics from Google show Blackpool is second-only to London in the most-searched-for destinations in the UK so far this year, with Stonehenge, Centerparcs and Bath making up the rest of the top five.

They do like to be beside the seaside …

MORE than half (58%) of Britons are expected take a holiday or short break on the coast this summer, according to the annual Travelodge holiday index. The report also claims that Britons will spend more than ever on their UK holidays this year.

It estimated they will spend an average of £729 on their breaks ‘to give the UK economy a welcome boost of almost £20 billion, up from £16.5 billion last year’.

The report – which has surveyed 3,000 British adults for the past six years – shows that 2016 is set to be the biggest year for seaside breaks since the study started.

Coastal locations dominate the list of most popular destinations, with Cornwall rated top for the second consecutive year, followed by Devon (3rd), Blackpool (5th), Brighton (8th), and Scarborough (10th).

After seaside holidays, the second most popular type of UK trip is the city break, with the top locations including London, Edinburgh, Manchester, York, and Liverpool.

The third most popular type of holiday is in the countryside. Among the rural holiday hotspots for 2016 are the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Scottish Highlands, Norfolk Broads, and the Cotswolds.

The study claims more than two-thirds (67%) of Britons are taking a staycation break this year.

The average British family is taking a one-week holiday supplemented by four short breaks throughout the year.

A Travelodge spokeswoman said: ‘A new trend we are seeing is more Britons taking a three-in-one holiday. This includes taking a city, rural, and coastal break as part of a one-week holiday.’

Sea Life Blackpool dives into yearly fish stocktake

SEA LIFE BLACKPOOL reports that it now has 2,623 creatures and 154 species, following its annual stocktake.

The count takes place over four weeks from December to January and involves each fish being counted three times by different members of staff to ensure the tally is accurate.

General Manager of #SEALIFE #Blackpool, Rachel Sipes, says: ‘Our stocktake is one of the most exciting occasions of the year for staff and helps us to understand how our population is growing and to keep track of the location of our inhabitants.

‘We’re pleased with the growth over the past year, when we have welcomed 671 more fish to our tanks. More than 100 babies were born here in 2015, including sharks, rays, and seahorses.’

On Blackpool’s seafront promenade, SEA LIFE Blackpool has been welcoming guests for more than 20 years. Visitors can learn how they can help to protect species living underwater near and far, with more than 50 displays and 2,000 aquatic creatures.

SEA LIFE is actively involved in conservation, research, and rescue projects, and believes that raising awareness of the importance of safeguarding the oceans and their inhabitants is one of its major priorities.

Outdoor shows in Blackpool’s LightPool extravaganza

BLACKPOOL’S ‘Brilliance’ arches will play host to a month of outdoor performances and live music throughout October as part of Blackpool Illuminations’ LightPool programme. The arches, based on Birley Street in the town centre, become the centrepiece of 11 different shows over five weekends during the month.
Throughout October, every Friday and Saturday evening will see a different performance taking place underneath the arches. An outdoor dance performance on bikes, Strictly Night Cycling, will start the events on October 2 and 3.

On October 8, poets will read their literary works out over the arches’ speaker system, as part of National Poetry Day. Aerial acrobatics will returns to #Blackpool on October 9 and 10, with the Wired Aerial Theatre group.

Circus acts and street artists will perform on October 16 and 17, and illuminated umbrella parades will lead people from the Promenade in to Birley Street on October 23 and 24.

The festival of acts will finish with two live music sessions on October 30 and 31.

All of the events will be #free.

Artistic Director of LeftCoast, Michael Trainor, said: ‘What we’re doing is bringing the Illuminations to life, giving people something that is live and happening all around them. We’ve managed to attract some exciting and talented artists to take part – but let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to star in #BlackpoolIlluminations.’

Blackpool’s beaches better than Bondi!

BLACKPOOL’S beaches are reckoned by the British to be the best in the world, according to a survey by Post Office Travel.

Earlier this year, all of Blackpool’s beaches – South, Central, North, and Bispham – scooped Seaside Awards from Keep Britain Tidy for the second successive year.

Councillor Gillian Campbell, deputy leader of #Blackpool Council, said: ‘It’s a fantastic accolade. I think a lot of people would be surprised about just how nice our beach is. It’s not only the cleanest it’s ever been; it also has some of the best views in the UK.

‘It helps make Blackpool the ideal location for a day trip, a weekend break or even a week-long stay.’

Go Holiday editor David Kernek comments: Was this survey done on April 1?

Welcome to Blackpool! …

… will be the message from the town’s Resort Ambassadors as they show visitors the way around Blackpool’s £2.4 million Lightpool project.

The team, funded by a £2 million grant from the Coastal Communities Fund, will help direct people to exhibits that are coming to the town centre. It will also have a role outside the Illuminations season, welcoming people to the town, offering advice to visitors, and providing travel and tourism tips.

Lightpool will enhance the Illuminations using creative content, the most noticeable change being the introduction of projection mapping technology. As well as the display along the six mile stretch of Promenade, a projection show will adorn The Blackpool Tower buildings.

Coun. Gillian Campbell, deputy leader of Blackpool Council, said: ‘We’ve got a huge range of new features for this year, as well as returning favourites and community sections and, of course, our new #Lightpool project.’

The full display runs from September 4 to November 8.

*Blackpool’s first electric lighting was in 1879 when eight Siemens arc lamps illuminated the Promenade. The effect was described by Victorian visitors as ‘artificial sunshine’.

Leisure pass launched in Blackpool

#VISITBLACKPOOL has teamed with the Leisure Pass Group to introduce a credit card-style Blackpool Resort Pass, giving visitors faster and more convenient access to six featured attractions in the seaside resort.

Priced at £55 per person, the pass entitles customers to one visit over a seven-day period to each of the following:

Blackpool Pleasure Beach (including the rides)
Nickelodeon Land
Blackpool Tower Eye & 4D Experience
Blackpool Tower Dungeon
SEA LIFE Blackpool
Madame Tussauds Blackpool

Customers can upgrade to the Blackpool Resort Pass Plus (£80 per person), which adds Blackpool Zoo, Sandcastle Waterpark, and Blackpool Model Village & Gardens.

End of the British two-week holiday?

THE NUMBER of people taking a two-week holiday has decreased by 46% over the last five years, according to a study by Travelodge, which surveyed 3,000 British adults about their holiday plans for 2015.

It found that UK holidaymakers are opting for one week away, with four shorter breaks spread out throughout the year. This year, 70% of Britons are planning a domestic break, with less than one in five (19%) taking a two-week holiday.

But the traditional #seasideholiday is back in vogue as more than half (56%) of Britons are heading to the coast this summer, with top destinations including Cornwall, Devon, Blackpool, Brighton, and Bournemouth.

The next most popular type of holiday is the #ruralescape, with 35% exploring the UK countryside in places such as the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Scottish Highlands, Norfolk Broads, and Cotswolds.

The number taking #citybreaks has fallen this year to 25%, from 37% last year. Top city break destinations for 2015 include London, Edinburgh, York, Bristol, and Liverpool.

A Travelodge spokeswoman said: ‘Our 2015 holiday index has revealed an interesting trend, with Britons taking more multiple breaks throughout the year, which suggests the end of the traditional two-week break.’

The golden age of the British seaside

David Kernek has been enjoying a new book about a long gone British institution

SOME of the most unclouded memories of my childhood in a gritty, post-war inner London borough were of annual one-week holidays in Great Yarmouth on the Norfolk coast. I remember the beaches – most of them newly-cleared of WW2 mines – the end-of-the-pier shows, the ice cream and hot dog stands, the tea stalls on the prom, candy floss, chips served up on pages from yesterday’s Daily Mirror, the stench of boiling hops from the town’s brewery and, of course, because it was July, the relentless east wind, rain, and the icy sea.

Great Yarmouth’s brewery has long since gone – there’s a supermarket on the site now –just as the world of the Great British #Seaside experience has vanished. It was the product of the 19th century railway boom that carried the toiling masses and their children from the dark, satanic cities to their weeks by the sea, creating a coastal network of towns – many of them previously small fishing ports – whose principal business was the provision of pleasure. Its end came a little more than a century later, done in – year by year – by the growth in the 1960s of the foreign package tour industry. The toiling masses could have their funfairs, hot dogs, chips, and tea in Benidorm, plus the things the Blackpools, Brightons, and Butlins’ couldn’t guarantee: sun and a warm sea.

Beside the Sea: Britain’s Lost Seaside Heritage by Sarah Freeman is an affectionate and informative history of the rise and protracted decline of this island’s coastal pleasure towns, from #Blackpool, #Brighton and Bangor and Scarborough and Southport – the towns that gave us holiday camps, donkey rides, knobbly knees and beauty contests, deckchairs and funfairs, and the great piers stretching out into the oceans. It was in the pavilions at the end of the piers that the entertainment stars of the 20th century laid the foundations of their fame.

Max Miller began his career on Brighton’s – now destroyed – West Pier. The Rolling Stones played the Tower Ballroom in New Brighton in 1964. By 1963, the Beatles had played at that venue 27 times. My first adolescent crush was on Helen Shapiro, a very young blues and pop singer. She topped the bill at a variety show in Great Yarmouth to which I was taken. I’ve never forgotten her!

For sale: three piers

TWO piers in Blackpool and one in Llandudno have been put on the market with a combined price tag of £12.6 million.

Blackpool Central Pier is for sale at £4.8 million. Blackpool South Pier, which features rides including the Skyscreamer and the Skycoaster rides, will cost £3.3 million. The 2,300ft Llandudno Pier – the longest in Wales – is on sale for £4.5 million.

The piers were built in the 19th century using cast iron piles, steel frames, and wooden decking, and all include promenades, amusement arcades, rides and food outlets.

They generate a total income of more than £1.6 million a year for operator Cuerden Leisure.

Richard Baldwin, a director at Bilfinger GVA, which is handling the sale, says: ‘Each of these piers is an iconic structure, having been popular visitor attractions in two of the UK’s best known resorts for more than a century. Each pier is being offered for sale freehold, subject to the various concession agreements in place.’

Blackpool Airport closure .......

CONFIRMATION of the closure of Blackpool Airport from today will damage the local economy at a time when the UK is “crying out” for better airport infrastructure, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has warned.

The association voiced its concern as the airport’s owners, Balfour Beatty, confirmed that it would shut , today on October 15.

Passengers due to fly from the airport with Jet2.com, Aer Lingus Regional, and Citywing were advised to contact the airlines.

ABTA said: ‘This loss of a local airport will have a very damaging impact on the local economy in Blackpool with the loss of many ancillary services, and on the wider north-west economy. Our surveys have repeatedly found that people prefer to fly from a local option when one is available. The government does not help the situation in maintaining the current level of sky-high aviation taxes, which are destructive of long term economic value.’

Blackpool Airport closure warning

BLACKPOOL AIRPORT has announced it is ‘likely to close’ unless it finds a new buyer.

The airport’s owner says that if a buyer isn't found by October 7, it will have to stop flights on October 15.

Balfour Beatty put the site up for sale last month after running the airport for six years, during many of which it has been making a loss.

Jet2 said it will continue to operate from the airport as usual until October 7 and will then put contingency plans in place for customers due to travel from the airport.

Aer Lingus and Citywing also operate from the airport.

Packed lunches ban at Blackpool Pleasure Beach

HOLIDAYMAKERS going for a day at Blackpool Pleasure Beach have been told they cannot take packed lunches in with them. Visitors may consume only food and drink bought inside the site.

Families will have already paid at least £80 just to get into the popular tourist attraction, so packed lunches are one way to keep the cost down. But visitors are reportedly being told to consume packed lunches outside the park and being turned away.

Other top UK attractions including Alton Towers, LEGOLAND - Windsor, and London Zoo welcome visitors with packed lunches.
