Blackpool Airport closure .......

CONFIRMATION of the closure of Blackpool Airport from today will damage the local economy at a time when the UK is “crying out” for better airport infrastructure, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has warned.

The association voiced its concern as the airport’s owners, Balfour Beatty, confirmed that it would shut , today on October 15.

Passengers due to fly from the airport with Jet2.com, Aer Lingus Regional, and Citywing were advised to contact the airlines.

ABTA said: ‘This loss of a local airport will have a very damaging impact on the local economy in Blackpool with the loss of many ancillary services, and on the wider north-west economy. Our surveys have repeatedly found that people prefer to fly from a local option when one is available. The government does not help the situation in maintaining the current level of sky-high aviation taxes, which are destructive of long term economic value.’
