Holidays that won’t break the bank …

ACCORDING to research by online charity marketplace Give as you Live, the average British family spends £860 per person on the annual family get-away. When applied to a family of four, this is equivalent to two months’ worth of the average salary.

Alon Eldar, CEO of lettings agency Only-apartments, www.only-apartments.com
 has these money-saving tips:

· When booking flights, searching midweek can result in a surprising drop in price. While embarking on a Friday evening or Saturday morning is convenient, re-arranging school and work schedules to correspond with a midweek departure can result in substantial savings. According to Which? Flying on a Tuesday is 35% cheaper than a Friday while those coming home on a Sunday pay a 45% premium.

· Consider travelling off season. Prices drop considerably after the summer months of June, July and August, including everything from flights and accommodation to restaurants and attractions.

· Make smarter food choices. According to published data from Skyscanner, 55% of Brits blew their food budget on their last holiday. Pre-departure research into restaurants offering discounted children’s menus or ‘kids eat for free’ deals is a great way to save cash. Booking accommodation with a fully-equipped kitchen also helps families slash the food budget.

· Only-apartments encourages parents to research popular attractions and find out if it’s possible to score any discounts or freebies. Many world class museums and galleries offer free admission on Sundays or after peak hours.

· Paying attention to a handful of smaller costs can also help keep costs to a minimum. Pre-booking airport parking can save drivers up to 25%, while using quote comparison websites to get travel insurance is the best way to secure a good deal. Borrowing guide books from the local library will cut out the need for a bookstore bill, and pre-arranging travel money cards will eliminate extortionate overseas ATM withdrawal fees.
