Brits move from beach to city breaks

CITY breaks have overtaken beach holidays in popularity for British holidaymakers driven by more flights, stag weekends and the strong pound, according to research by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).

Its latest consumer survey found 42% of Brits took a city break last year while 38% went to the beach.

The 25-34 age group is driving the trend, with half taking a city break, and it is also the age group taking the most holidays in a year at an average of three.

Around 20% of those surveyed said they had travelled with an adult-only group of friends, with 3.2% of men travelling for a stag party and 1% of women heading overseas for a hen do.

The age group is taking a mixture of UK and overseas trips and the majority still tend to book using laptops or PCs (92%).
