Full steam ahead

THE Talyllyn Railway was the first of the small railways to be rescued by a preservation society, and is now one of the Great Trains of Wales. Race the Train takes place Saturday August 18th, alongside as far as practicable the route taken by the Talyllyn Railway on its journey to Abergynolwyn and back. In order to do this all courses use a mixture of public roads, lanes, un-metalled roads, tracks, agricultural land, and rough grazing pastures.

A must for all multi - terrain runners many of whom return regularly to try and better their performance or just beat that train while others have run nearly every year since the races started. The challenge of not only racing your fellow competitor’s but also the Train. Having been televised world-wide on several occasions we have attracted many runners from abroad coming from as far away as New Zealand, Australia, America, Hong Kong, Africa etc.

The Brecons beckon in the winter

THE Brecon Beacons National Park, located in South Wales, is a treasure trove for visitors. From adrenaline-fueled abseiling and mountain biking, to scenic walks and pub lunches, visitors can explore the destination year-round.

Christmas is a particularly magical time to visit the National Park as the market towns come to life with festive markets, food celebrations and Santa grottos in underground caves.  Here are a roundup of festive activities to do in the #BreconBeacons this winter:

Hay Festival Winter Weekend, 23-26 November 2017
The world famous Hay Literature Festival’s Winter Weekend promises an array of literary talks and events throughout the book town alongside a food and vintage festival.  Over 40 exhibitors will attend the food festival and those looking to pick up a vintage bargain will be able to do so on Sunday 26 November at the fashion fair. http://www.hayfestival.com/winterweekend/

Royal Welsh Winter Fair, 27-28 November 2017
Recognised as one of the most popular attractions on the British agricultural show calendar and the finest prime stock show in Europe, the best Welsh food producers get together to showcase their produce. The two day event includes cookery, produce, handicraft, poultry, horticulture, floral art and meat products competitions, a firework display, Christmas gifts and a Santa’s grotto. www.rwas.wales/winter-fair  and prices cost £15 for adults and £5 for children.

Abergavenny Christmas Food Festival, 10 December 2017
The annual Christmas Food and Drink Fair showcases over 90 stalls and exhibitors from all over Wales, including fresh and cured meats, poultry and game, cheeses and chocolates, cakes and desserts, wines and liqueurs, ales and cider. The festival includes bite-size chef demonstrations throughout the day and the chance to spend time with food experts and learn the newest seasonal tips. www.abergavennyfoodfestival.com.

Beacons Trike Tours Limited
Whether it's the thrill of a motorbike ride or the chance to soak up the surroundings whilst being 'chauffeur driven', Trike Tours offer a unique and alternative way to explore the Brecon Beacons. Running a Christmas discount from now until the end of 2017, visitors can save 15% on all tours and vouchers. www.beaconstriketours.co.uk.

Dan-yr-Ogof Cave and Cathedral Cave Christmas Experience
Forget a Santa’s grotto in a high street store, behind a curtained-off section, and instead head deep underground and explore a magical world in the caves and caverns in the Brecon Beacons. Children can step right into a Welsh mountain and discover the ancient caves whilst visiting Santa in his authentic grotto. Furthermore, families can call by the National Showcaves Centre and marvel at one of the largest collections of life-sized dinosaur models in the world. Kids can also enjoy a trailer ride to look at the animals, including the Shire Horses, on the Morgan Brothers’ farm. The caves are open every weekend in December. www.showcaveschristmas.co.uk.

Christmas at The Angel, Abergavenny
The Angel Hotel, named 'AA Hotel of the Year for Wales 2016/17', offers a number of special Christmas packages and events, including The Après Ski Bar - a popup bar bringing the ambience of alpine ski lodge to Abergavenny and serving Swiss fondue, sausages and steins.  www.angelabergavenny.com

Conquer Snowdon

20 miles over 1 mountain. You’ll begin your journey at sea level from within the UNESCO World Heritage listed Caernarfon Castle before climbing steadily through the beautiful landscapes of Northern Wales with some obstacles along the way.

Once you’ve braved the elements and descended from the summit of Snowdon, you’ll then face the ‘All Out Vertical Kilometre’, a guided abseil, and a series of land and water based obstacles designed to test what strength remains.

30 Days Wild

@Dani Cox.jpg
THIS June for the whole month, every day, everybody, everywhere, will be encouraged to enjoy nature on their doorstep, as well as the ‘great outdoors’. The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales (WTSWW) will be inspiring ‘Random Acts of Wildness’, practical, fun and quirky ideas that will connect people with the wild around them.

Meander along a river bank, dance in a downpour, record a wild ringtone, meditate in a meadow or simply sip a glass of wine as the sun goes down and appreciate your garden. People can spend a few minutes, or a few hours each day enjoying nature - how they do it is up to them.

This year 30 Days Wild is revelling in the glory of traditional meadows which bloom with wildflowers in June. 'Unimproved' pastures and meadows with their characteristic wealth of wild plants and animals are rare and fragmented - occupying just 5% of the area that they occupied in 1945. The Wildlife Trusts care for many that can be visited and enjoyed.

Apply for a FREE 30 Days Wild pack at www/welshwildlife.org/30-days-wild/, download the phone app or look online for those inspirational Random Acts of Wildness.  Share the fun of #30DaysWild on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. WTSWW will be running wild events for all the family throughout June.

Quirks and Curiosities on the Railway

FOLLOWING its success in 2010 even more weird and wonderful railway oddities will be on display this year, ranging from vertical-boilered steam locomotives, through bizarre internal combustion powered locos, to the unique wind-powered Spooner's Boat.

According to FR General Manager Paul Lewin, "The first Quirks was one of the most popular events we've ever put on and this promises to be the fun event of 2017. We are lining up a large number of special trains in the way that only the Ffestiniog can and having more unusual stock on site will really add to the fun. This Bank Holiday promises to have something for everyone as we showcase all the little things that make the railway special.

The event runs from April 28 to May 1 over the Bank Holiday weekend and tickets are available from www.festrail.co.uk

Wails in Wales

#HALLOWEEN events for all ages are taking place at Rhondda Heritage Park this October - from the ‘slightly spooky’ to the ‘very scary.’

The Council’s popular family tourist attraction is set to be transformed for a limited period - and is a must for thrill seekers.

There will also be traditional events taking place for families and younger visitors, including Pumpkin Carving, a Pumpkin Hunt, Face Painting, Arts and Crafts and the Energy Zone childrens’ outdoor adventure park.

Open on selected dates from October 20-31, the Council’s iconic family tourist attraction is transformed into a ‘military lockdown experience’ that you will not want to miss.

Seal-sational Skomer

Seal pup on Skomer Island having a snooze
#SKOMER ISLAND voted Britain’s Favorite Nature Reserve 2016, is well known for its Puffins, but what people don’t realise is that once the puffins have left around August time, the Atlantic Grey Seals start to have their pups on Skomer’s beaches.

The Wildlife Trust Skomer Team monitor their progress each year and so far this autumn 7 seal pups have been born. Since 1983 contributions by The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales’ members and seal friends, together with funding by NRW, have enabled the staff of Skomer Island to conduct a detailed seal study.

Seal Pup with Skomer Assistant Warden; Jason Moss
“Nowadays the seals around Skomer are doing well and are protected by law from persecution and disturbance but there was a time when this wasn’t the case.” says Birgitta Bueche, one of the two Head Wardens for Skomer Island.

For further information on visiting and staying on Skomer Island, please visit www.welshwildlife.org

National Trust hide-aways

THE NATIONAL TRUST has hundreds of places to stay across England, Wales and Northern Ireland this summer.

From former fishermen's houses on the coast and farmhouses with plenty of space for all the family (and the dog) to stone dwellings in the back and beyond, the trust’s property collection has something to cater for all self-catering tastes.

Here are some new for 2016 …

Ferry Cottage, Brixham, Devon: Thanks to a National Trust restoration project, this Grade 2 Listed detached cottage on Agatha Christie's famous Greenway estate opens for the first time this summer. The two double bedrooms have uninterrupted views across the River Dart towards the village of Dittisham. Guests have free access to Greenway House during opening hours and unlimited access to gardens during their stay.

9 Arlington Row, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire: Thousands of tourists flock to the Cotswold village of Bibury to photograph the cottages on Arlington Row. Number 9 is the only holiday cottage in this location. The buildings date back to 1380 when their function was a monastic wool store. Sleeps three.

The Old Rectory, Rhossili, Swansea: This house dates from 1850s and is above a wide expanse of sandy beach, with uninterrupted views of the sea and the tidal island of Worm's Head. Dylan Thomas nearly bought this house, but at 15 minutes from the nearest pub it was a walk too far. Rhossili Bay is good for surfing. Sleeps seven.

Rockside Cottage, Northumberland: The cottage is part of a square of fishermen's houses. Sleeps four.

Woodford Cottage, County Fermanagh: A former piggery on the Crom Estate, the cottage has two bedrooms and a well-equipped kitchen. Guests can spend the holiday fishing, biking, kayaking, and walking without ever needing to leave the estate. Sleeps four + a cot.

Triumphal Arch, Leominster, Herefordshire: Designed by Henry Holland, this unusual cottage is situated in one half of the entrance archway to the Berrington Hall Estate. The cottage has a private garden, and guests have access to Berrington's Capability Brown-designed gardens and parkland when the house is closed to the public. Sleeps five.

Greenlands, Studland, Dorset: Newly-renovated by the trust, Greenlands is a farmhouse on the edge of Poole Harbour. The house has views over the harbour across to Brownsea Island (a haven for wildlife, including the rare red squirrel) and inland over Dorset Heathland. Sleeps five.

Watermill Apartment, North Norfolk: A watermill conversion beside the coast road between Wells and Brancaster, with fine views of the stream and surrounding countryside. Sleeps four + two.

East Cottage, White Cliffs of Dover, Kent: This former lighthouse keeper's cottage is in one of the most dramatic places in England. Sleeps four.

Lighthouse Keeper's cottage 1 and 2, Souter Lighthouse, Tyne and Wear: These historic cottages are on the clifftops on the North-East coast. Both cottages sleep four.

We’ve got a nature reserve for you . . .

THE WILDLIFE TRUST of South and West Wales (WTSWW) has launched four promotional videos about the wild places and experiences people can enjoy on its reserves.

The first video focuses on a variety of WTSWW reserves, including Parc Slip in Bridgend, Melin Cwrt Falls in Neath Port Talbot, Taf Fechan in Merthyr, and The Welsh Wildlife Centre in Cilgerran.
