Plastic Expedition

ON Monday ‘eXXpedition North Pacific’, in collaboration with recycling innovators TOMRA, set sail from Honolulu, Hawaii on a scientific research mission led by award winning British skipper and ocean advocate Emily Penn to investigate solutions to the devastating impact of single-use plastic and toxic's in the world’s oceans.

The expedition is made up of a diverse and international group of 24 women from Britain, USA, Canada, Slovenia, Norway and Honduras.

Split over two voyage legs, they will journey for a month over 3,000 nautical miles through the densest ocean plastic accumulation zone on the planet, the North Pacific Gyre - better known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Discover Honduras long hidden secrets

NEWLINK Group has banded together with the Honduran Institute of Tourism to promote the distinct beauty and history of Honduras to world-travelers and archaeological buffs alike. #Honduras has long been the home to some of the world's most well-known archeological sites, but with others of legend only recently discovered, the Central American country continues to add to its robust archeology offering. 

With years of speculation and searching, Honduras' legendary "The Lost City of the Monkey God" was discovered in 2015. Located in the Mosquitia region in eastern Honduras, "Kaha Kamasa," meaning White City in Misquito dialect, is home to ruins dating between A.D. 1,000 and 1,500. 

The new Archeology Research Center, located in the El Aguacate sector of the Olancho province, will house artifacts excavated from the site and serves as a place for educational tourism, welcoming visitors to learn about the scientific procedures that have been applied to study the found relics.

Space on Tour

EUROPEAN Space Agency Astronaut Tim Peake has launched a ‘first-of-its-kind’ national tour of the Soyuz spacecraft used for his Principia mission, with the aim of inspiring a generation of people across the country.

The Science Museum Group, which acquired the capsule Soyuz TMA - 19M in 2016, and global technology innovators Samsung, have joined forces to create The National Tour of Tim Peake’s Spacecraft and Space Descent VR. 

The Soyuz spacecraft will go on public display across the length and breadth of the British Isles, enhanced by Space Descent VR - a unique virtual reality adventure using Samsung Gear VR technology which places visitors right at the heart of Tim Peake’s journey from the International Space Station back to Earth.

It’s the first time that a Science Museum Group object has ever undertaken such a comprehensive tour of the UK, and the venture has a unique twist as one more tour venue will be chosen via a public competition.  Any venue interested in being the sixth venue of the tour, in autumn 2018, can apply via an online competition form at group.sciencemuseum.org.uk 

The deadline for entries is 1 December 2017, and the winner will be announced in March 2018

Science by the seaside

THE British Science Association (BSA) is pleased to announce that the British #Science Festival 2017 will take place in #Brighton September 5-9. The University of Brighton and the University of Sussex will co-host the Festival. The annual event is one of Europe’s leading and longest-established science festivals.

Visitors should expect to find talks, debates, workshops and performances about cutting-edge science from world-leading academics. Topics will cover the whole scientific spectrum including technology, engineering and social sciences.

World Science Festival hits Brisbane in March

QUEENSLAND becomes the world stage to celebrate the intersection of science and art for the World Science Festival Brisbane from March 22-26. Through conversation and performance by some of the greatest thought leaders in the world the Festival will showcase scientists and performers from around Asia Pacific and host the brightest and best from previous events in New York. 

Expect a program in which astronauts share their tips for going to the bathroom in space, kids play with computer microscopes, and food trucks compete for road space with robots. Even those without the brilliance of Einstein are bound to find something to delight and amuse.

QUEENSLAND is preparing to host another supercharged celebration of science when the World Science Festival Brisbane returns from 22-26 March 2017.

Speaking from the #Queensland Museum, Science Minister Leeanne Enoch today unveiled program highlights confirmed for the 2017 festival.

“The #WorldScienceFestival 2017 will build on the momentum of this year’s incredible inaugural event that saw more than 120,000 people attend Festival activities and injected more than $5 million into the Queensland economy,” Ms Enoch said.

“Next year’s festival will welcome the return of family-favourite free program, Street Science!, alongside new theatrical performances, workshops and curated discussions on cutting-edge science and discoveries.

At-Bristol celebrates record visitor numbers

AT-BRISTOL SCIENCE CENTRE, an educational charity and one of the UK's leading interactive science centres, is celebrating a record number of visitors for the last financial year, when welcomed more than 304,000 visitors through its doors, including 62,100 schools visitors … a 13% increase on the previous year.

A contributing factor to the rise in visitor numbers was the opening of the revamped Planetarium, the UK's only 3D digital planetarium, which has welcomed 123,358 visitors since re-opening in April 2015.

Phil Winfield, At-Bristol's Chief Executive said: ‘We're dedicated to sparking and fostering that natural curiosity that people have about the world around us, and we're trying to create the maximum impact by giving people a genuinely inspiring experience here in #AtBristol. We've got lots of exciting initiatives in the pipeline.

See the Hadron Collider in Edinburgh

A SECTION of the world's biggest scientific experiment – the #LargeHadronCollider (LHC) – will be part of an exhibition at Edinburgh's Dynamic Earth starting on July 31.

A life-sized mock-up of part of the 17-mile particle accelerator will be on display at the attraction until August 24.

The exhibition will feature walk-through section of the LHC tunnel and accelerator, the machine that confirmed the existence of the Higgs Boson particle, as proposed by University of #Edinburgh professor and Nobel prize-winner, Peter Higgs.

Hermione Cockburn, scientific director at Dynamic Earth, said: ‘The CERN Hadron Collider is pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery, and changing what we know about the composition of our universe. It's incredibly exciting to have a section of the world's largest experiment on display, and fitting that it should visit us here in Edinburgh, where Professor Higgs theorized the existence of his proposed particle.’

Eilidh Massie, marketing manager at #Dynamic Earth, adds: ‘Alongside this impressive machine section, there will also be iconic images from the world of science, and interactive exhibits.’
