Oh we do like to be beside the seaside . . .

EASTBOURNE’S spring beer festival, Beer and Cider by the Sea, serves up more than 100 real ales, a wide variety of ciders and perries, and an abundance of cocktails and wine along with great entertainment from live bands.

Back for a fifth year the festival (May 26-28) celebrates Eastbourne’s great position as a seaside town just minutes from two award-winning breweries, the home of the National Cider and Perry Collection, and many vineyards dotted across the Sussex countryside.

Half of the real cask ales on offer will be provided by local breweries.

Commemorative Train Journey

A commemorative Poppy train is being run by Southeastern trains ahead of Remembrance Sunday, taking paying passengers on a round trip from London, through Kent and on to Brighton to raise money for the Royal British Legion.

To mark 100 years since the Battle of the Somme, the train will display a new design wrap and make a rare journey along the East Sussex coast to Brighton. It is the third year Southeastern has teamed up with UK Rail Tours to run a special high speed service.

The journey will take place on Saturday 12th November and has been organised by Southeastern's Andy Harding, High Speed Fleet Engineering Manager and Kent Evenden, a Driver Manager High Speed.

Andy said: “The Royal British Legion is a fantastic organisation. We wanted to create the Poppy train to raise awareness and money to help them support the Armed Forces community and their families. In 2015 we managed to raise more than £20,500 but this year we’re hoping to donate even more – all in aid of the Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

This coast is made for walking

WALKERS can enjoy 66 miles of new and improved National Trail with the launch of the first stretch of the England Coast Path in Kent and East Sussex.

The continuous route between Camber and Ramsgate is the first section of the England Coast Path to open in the south-east of England. It gives unbridled views of coastline, including the White Cliffs and the unique areas of Dungeness and Pegwell Bay, popular for birdwatching, and their landscape and summer flowers.

Natural England is establishing a 2,700-mile path around the entire English coastline by 2020 and work is already under way on 60 percent of the route. When completed, it will be the world’s longest continuous coastal walking route.

Speaking at the National Trust’s White Cliffs centre, the chairman of Natural England, Andrew Sells, said: ‘I am delighted to be here for the formal opening of this 66-mile section of the England Coast Path – the most significant rights of way project for a generation. This beautiful and iconic stretch will allow walkers to enjoy amazing views, fabulous wildlife, and places with significant cultural and historical value – all from a high-quality footpath. It will also connect coastal communities and encourage walkers to visit more of the coast, bringing an added economic boost to the region.’

The route provides a link between communities and towns along the coast including Camber and Lydd, Greatstone and Hythe and Deal and Sandwich. It includes areas and features of heritage, such as the supposed landing site of Caesar at Walmer, embarkation points on the River Stour at Richborough used by soldiers and horses in the First World War, Napoleonic Martello towers, and extensive Second World War defences at Dover.

Three miles of new path have also been created at Sandwich, giving access around the peninsula for the first time.

Vintage Eastbourne

#EASTBOURNE’S vintage motoring festival, #MagnificentMotors, returns to the coastal town’s Victorian seafront from April 30 to May 1.

Exhibits will include a 1968 Ford Mustang, a 1928 Rover Open Tourer, and a 1902 Manley steam carriage, the oldest exhibit confirmed at the festival so far. The well-established festival on Eastbourne’s coast at the Western Lawns, typically draws in more than over 500 motors.

There will be vintage chauffeur-driven tours of the South Downs, and a four-day vintage market (April 29-May 2).

Later in the year, from July 23 to September 5, the Redoubt’s free Eastbourne Seaside Holiday exhibition takes visitors on a nostalgic journey exploring Eastbourne’s transition from Victorian seaside ‘tennis town’ to a thriving 1970’s seaside resort.

Not the End of the Pier show

HASTINGS-BORN Graham McPherson – aka Madness lead singer #Suggs – has fixed the final screw to complete the re-decking of Hastings Pier following a £15 million renovation project.

Scheduled to open to the public in late April, Madness will headline a gala opening celebration on the pier on May 21. In its heyday, the pier hosted many of the best US and British musicians, including The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and Jimi Hendrix.

First opened in 1872, the 890ft-long pier enjoyed many years of popularity, but the gradual decline in the British seaside in the 70's and 80's led to poor maintenance and declining visitor numbers. The pier was closed in 2008 and a fire in 2010 all but destroyed the superstructure.

Tickets for the Madness concert and the gala re-opening day celebrations are available from the Hastings Pier website.

Top nosh in Sussex

EAST SUSSEX is spoilt with the richness of its local produce. The biggest concentration of vineyards can be found there; two fishing fleets, one in Hastings – the largest beach- launched fleet in the UK – and the other in Rye, hold Marine Stewardship Council accreditation for sustainable methods of fishing; passionate food producers of local meat such as wild boar and Romney Marsh lamb are celebrated by local restaurants.
The setting for local producers is the High Weald and the ancient towns of Hastings and Rye, both of which once belonged to the Cinque Ports Federation. Maritime and medieval history, coastal and countryside pursuits, gardens and castles, quirky shopping experiences and a strong artistic community make this area especially attractive for visitors.
Joining the stable of the Rye Scallops Week, Wild Boar Week, Hastings Herring Fair and the Hastings Seafood & Wine Festival is a newcomer: the Pevensey Food & Wine Festival, to be held on August 30 and 31.  It will be in the grounds of Pevensey Castle, close to the spot where William of Normandy landed in 1066.

*Visit England reports that the UK has become a foodie nation. Stats show that 13 million day visits last year involved a trip to a food festival or a farmer’s market. Research also reveals that almost 68 percent would like to be able to buy local produce while on holiday.
