Where right is wrong …
THERE have been calls in New Zealand for T-plates – that’s T for tourists – to be attached to hire cars driven by foreign holidaymakers, the worry being that they’re unfamiliar with the rules of the road in NZ and cause problems for the natives, who are. The main rule of the road in NZ is that cars drive on the left, which – as Americans in Britain will tell you – is often a challenge for drivers from right-hand countries.
The T-plates idea is a good one, since the left-right difference is not an uncommon cause of accidents – some of them fatal – in the UK and across the Channel, where our European neighbours insist obstinately on driving on the wrong – or right – side.

It’s often assumed that Britain is one of the very few left-hand drive countries on the planet. There are certainly more that drive on the right, but the UK is far from alone in sticking to the system that prevailed across Europe until a Russian czar and Napoleon had the silly idea of switching carriage traffic to the right.
India is obviously a major market for right-hand drive cars, but there other very big countries population-wise that drive on the left having never been a British Empire territory or a Commonwealth member: Indonesia (formerly a Dutch colony) and Japan do it, too.

New Zealand group wants foreign drivers to display ‘T’ plates
TOURISTS driving in
#NewZealand would be required to take a driving test and display “T Plates” in their car windows if it were up to a group that says the visitors are causing too many automobile wrecks in the country.
The ‘T Plates for Tourist’ group says that people visiting New Zealand are unprepared for the country’s rough roads and should be tested to make sure they know how to drive on them. If they pass the test, they should display a “T plate” in the window of their cars to warn local drivers.
‘People who come to this country are given the right to drive despite many of them not knowing our driving rules or regulations -- hence the number of crashes that occur on our roads,’ says the group’s spokesman.
The worst month for crashes in the country is February, according to the New Zealand Transport Agency. In an average February between 2006 and 2013, the agency said foreign drivers were involved in 7 percent of accidents that ended in injury or death.

Vintage Eastbourne
#EASTBOURNE’S vintage motoring festival, #MagnificentMotors, returns to the coastal town’s Victorian seafront from April 30 to May 1.
Exhibits will include a 1968 Ford Mustang, a 1928 Rover Open Tourer, and a 1902 Manley steam carriage, the oldest exhibit confirmed at the festival so far. The well-established festival on Eastbourne’s coast at the Western Lawns, typically draws in more than over 500 motors.
There will be vintage chauffeur-driven tours of the South Downs, and a four-day vintage market (April 29-May 2).
Later in the year, from July 23 to September 5, the Redoubt’s free Eastbourne Seaside Holiday exhibition takes visitors on a nostalgic journey exploring Eastbourne’s transition from Victorian seaside ‘tennis town’ to a thriving 1970’s seaside resort.
