Saving Patagonia's legendary Torres Trail

SOUTHERN Explorations, specializing in crafting custom small-group trips and itineraries to Latin America, has partnered with the Torres del Paine Legacy Fund to help save Patagonia's legendary Torres Trail.

Visits to the trail in world-renowned Torres del Paine National Park have rapidly increased. The trail can now receive as many as one thousand hikers a day. Such intensive use has resulted in serious deterioration of the trail and addressing these impacts is now an urgent priority.

Under its partnership agreement with the Chilean National Forest Corporation (CONAF), the Legacy Fund has joined AMA Torres del Paine to launch the "Tu Mejor Huella para el Paine" (Your best footprint for Paine) campaign.

Montana: A hikers paradise

WITH over 15,000 miles of trails ready to be explored, it's no wonder Montana is a hiker's paradise. No matter the season, #Montana is the perfect place to #hike and discover all the unspoiled beauty this state has to offer, but the most underrated season to experience breathtaking beauty is autumn. Crisp mornings, red and gold hues around every bend, and trails that are less traveled make #autumn the ideal time to hike in Montana.

Sluice Boxes State Park - The trail follows the Belt Creek flow through the soaring cliffs of Belt Creek Canyon, and crossing the creek is part of the route you'll follow. This hike showcases the stunning contrast of autumn colors from Chokecherry, Aspen and Cottonwood leaves against the light rock of the cliffs.

Ross Creek Cedar Grove Scenic Area, Kootenai National Forest - Imagine standing in the towering presence of ancient Western Red Cedars – some of which are 12 feet in diameter and 175 feet tall. The Ross Creek Cedar Grove Scenic Area offers a self-guided interpretive nature trail through a unique forest ecosystem.

Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park - offering incredible views above and below ground. While the expansive limestone caverns are a favorite, you won't want to miss the above-ground opportunities to explore 10 miles of trails.

Custer Gallatin National Forest Beartooth District - known for its rugged mountains and sub-alpine tundra plateaus, Custer Gallatin National Forest Beartooth District, close to Red Lodge, is home to stunning scenery, fantastic trails and epic views of fall foliage. For a truly memorable hike, plan a day on the Stillwater River Trail #24. Begin the hike in the shelter of the Stillwater River Canyon as you follow the Stillwater River, the highest elevation point is a little more than two miles from the trailhead and provides a breathtaking view of Sioux Charley Lake below.

Wild Horse Island State Park - Hiking in the fall is the perfect opportunity to enjoy jaw-dropping scenery and abundant wildlife viewing. At over 2,100 acres, Wild Horse Island is located on the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. This island park is surrounded by the crystal clear waters of Flathead Lake and can only be accessed by water.

Elephant Back Mountain Trail, Yellowstone National Park - The trail takes you on a loop through the dense Lodgepole pine forests to a stunning overlook. You'll want to bring a camera to capture the panoramic views of Yellowstone Lake; the beautiful yellow and red hues of surrounding deciduous trees create an incredible contrast against the dark green conifers.

Working with a number of fellow Adventure Travel Trade Association members for lodging and activity services, Galakiwi has curated some special experiences throughout the country. #Riding horses “chagra” style near Cotopaxi National Park and “climbing” up waterfalls on the edge of the Amazon are two experiences that have already garnered high praise from the first travelers on the new 2018 Ecuador adventure.

Mashatu: 5 days in 5 different ways

MASHATU is a private wildlife sanctuary ideally located in northern Tuli at the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo rivers where eastern #Botswana meets South Africa. It’s not called “Land of Giants” for nothing – it is home to the largest population of elephants (1000+) on private land on the continent as well as prolific wildlife and bird species including lion, leopard, zebra, giraffe, wild dog as well as many plains antelope. What sets Mashatu apart though is its sheer “Wow factor” - the vast open spaces, the incredible vistas, breath-taking night skies - and the ability to set out and explore this remote slice of #Africa in five different ways that are sure to get the adrenaline pumping.

1. Walk with Giants Half day walking trails not only promise ticking off some of the big game – but the focus is on the little, often overlooked aspects of the bush – tracks, plants, insects, etc. A more intimate bush experience that will awaken your senses and allow you to become a part of the environment – not merely a spectator on a vehicle.

2. Pedal power Mountain bike safaris allow adventurous guests to see the bush from a different perspective. Experienced rangers provide all equipment and accompany cyclists as they pedal their way along ancient elephant paths. Rides are tailored to suit the fitness and strength of the riders in the early mornings and late afternoons.

3. Ride on the wild side Experienced riders can join Limpopo Horse Safaris for a morning or afternoon ride into the wilderness. The terrain is ideal for exhilarating horse riding with natural ditches and logs to jump. Spot elephants and cats as well as antelopes, wild dogs, jackals, bat eared foxes, giraffe - and on occasion, canter with zebras and wildebeest across the plains. You can even ‘camp wild’ on a 7-day ride out on Mashatu.

4. Traditional game drives Guided game drives with specialised rangers and trackers – mostly local Batswanas who have been living and guiding on Mashatu for over 13 years. Expect to see excellent daily sightings of the “Big 5 of Predators” (namely lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and jackal).

5. Clickety click The combination of spectacular lighting, the quality of game viewing and guidance of the resident wildlife photographer means that Mashatu is a real “hot spot” for photographers. So much so, that a photograph called "Essence of Elephants", taken at Mashatu’s unique sunken Matabole Hide won Greg du Toit the BBC Worldwide "Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2013" title. Matabole is currently being upgraded to be even better when it reopens in March 2018. If that isn’t reason enough to get you reaching for your big lens – Mashatu’s newest hide, Elephant Valley Hide offers an alternative experience for up to 4 photographers in a contrasting section of the reserve which is more arid - so an important water source for wildlife in those drier areas.

Wheelchairs and Mountains

AT first glance Mount Rainier might not appear to be the best vacation choice for wheelchair-users and slow walkers. After all, the namesake mountain towers some 14,000 feet over the surrounding national park. In fact all three of the Evergreen State’s national parks offer #accessible options for those that use wheelchairs, walkers, canes and crutches.

This inclusive title is part of Candy B. Harrington’s national park series; and although it’s written for wheelchair-users and slow walkers, moms who have stroller-aged kids will also appreciate the access information in this guide. More access resources for some of America's top #nationalparks can also be found on Harrington’s Barrier-Free National Parks website at www.barrierfreenationalparks.com.

Over the rainbow

THE Vinicunca Mountain, also known as the Rainbow Mountain, is no longer a secret tucked in the central Andes of #Peru. It has become an alternative attraction to the famed Machu Picchu citadel, and nowadays you can find day tours to visit this geological wonder. In fact, it’s becoming one of the top activities to do while in Cusco.

Locals say that the Rainbow Mountain used to be covered in glaciers that melted due to global warming, thus its late touristic discovery. The minerals in the Rainbow Mountain caused the sandstones to acquire a red rust-like color that contrasts the yellow, maroon and turquoise stripes, caused by the presence of other minerals combined with weathering; truly a geological wonder.

The Rainbow Mountain is now more accessible than ever thanks to http://RainbowMountain.Center, where you can book a day trip that leaves from Cusco early in the morning and arrives four hours later to the towns of Chilca or Japura situated at the bottom of the mountain. From there you’ll hike five miles for about two or three hours until you reach the peak. It sounds easy, but it’s actually challenging due to the elevation (17,000 feet).

Getting to the top of the Rainbow mountain involves a steep hike that could be extremely challenging for individuals who are not fully acclimatized to the altitude. It’s recommended you spend at least a couple of days in Cusco prior to the excursion.

Horse rentals and muleteers are also available for travelers not wanting to hike in high altitude. Locals rent horses to take you and your gear up and down covering 98% of the entire trek. There are 2 very steep sections that everyone has to hike on their own for about 10 minutes each in order to protect the horses from exhaustion.

Once you reach the Rainbow Mountain, the most scenic view is to trek to the top of the opposing mountain in order to take the classic Rainbow Mountain picture that is currently so popular in social media. From this summit, you can see the entire Red Valley below. Venturing into the Red Valley below makes you feel as if you are in a completely different planet as the vibrant red and yellow rocks and multi-color sediments create a truly unique environment unlike any other on planet earth.

Hiking & Cycling in Hong Kong

HONG KONG may be known as a modern and cosmopolitan city, famous for its myriad skyscrapers, shopping options and dining hotspots, but the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is aiming to shed light on a different side with the launch of their latest campaign Hong Kong’s Great Outdoors.

The new campaign encourages Aussies to don their active gear and set out to explore a more organic side of the city, one that is far removed from its buzzing urban centre. To show visitors what they are missing out on, the HKTB has recruited a handful of local photographers, including: landscape photographer and a Hong Kong National Geographic 2013 photography winner, Will Cho; veteran outdoor sports photographer, Elvis Mo; a Nature Conservancy 2017 photography winner, Jessica Li; and renowned photographer, Romain Jacquet Lagreze, best-known for his “Vertical Horizon” photo series, showcasing the geometric lines of Hong Kong.

HKTB’s newly published guidebook “Your Guide to Hiking & Cycling in Hong Kong”. The guidebook is available from visitor centres around the city or as an e-version and is divided into three different themes: Hiking in Heritage; Picture-Perfect Vistas; and Geological Wonders, with each section detailing suggested trails, along with the estimated time required and difficulty levels. Visitors are free to escape the hustle and bustle of the city at their own leisure and discover the surrounding beauty whether it be spectacular cityscapes; remote beaches; rustic villages; serene islands; or historical and cultural landmarks. The guidebook also features cycling trails for those who are keen to explore at a slightly faster speed.

Drive, bike, hike or ski in the wild west

COLORADO'S
history runs as deep as the silver and gold veins that once lured a surge of fortune seekers here during the late-1800’s mining boom.

But when those rich resources went bust, dozens of towns were abandoned—leaving behind saloons, mercantiles and other hallmarks of Wild West life. Catch glimpses of this bygone era in the remains of ghost towns tucked amid high peaks and remote wilderness.

ATV/OFF-ROAD VEHICLE - Ghost towns in Colorado range from mere ruins to surprisingly intact hamlets—for the latter, venture St. Elmo, where a few lingering residents run a general store and a guesthouse. Seek the help of Buena Vista’sATV Mountain Adventure Rentals, which will drop you and your rented ride off trailside (and pick you up later), leaving you to explore the dusty, straight-out-of-a-movie set streets on your own.

Set your sights on Animas Forks, located high in the San Juan Mountains. Just 12 miles away in Silverton, Rock Pirates Backcountry Adventures can hook you up with one of its rugged Tomcar OHVs for a bumpy-yet-scenic excursion up the Alpine Loop Scenic & Historic Byway.

HIKE - The North Park area is home to Teller City, a former silver-mining camp that at one time boasted 27 saloons, hundreds of log cabins and more than 1,500 residents—not too shabby given its dense-forest location. Head southeast of Walden to the Teller City Interpretive Site, then hit the .75-mil loop trail that winds arounds scattered remains of cabins and other artifacts.

The high-altitude setting of Carson (almost 12,000 feet) makes it all the more rewarding for its views of massive peaks. Lake City, situated near the Continental Divide, is your base for this adventure. Hop on the Alpine Loop Scenic & Historic Byway to Wager Gulch Trailhead. The moderate-to-difficult hike is a steady, 3.4-mile climb leading through open meadows and aspen stands to the Carson site.

BIKE - Eleven miles south of Aspen, Ashcroft is one of a few ghost towns that can be visited year-round. But it would be a shame to miss the vivid colors of wildflower season in late summer or fall’s brilliant foliage—both ideal times for a two-wheeled ride along Castle Creek Road.

Central City escaped a boom-to-bust fate, but hidden just up the hill is Nevadaville, which bustled with some 4,000 people in its heyday. Several original buildings and a few gravesites are left, in addition to the Nevada Lodge No.4, still used by Freemasons for monthly meetings.

SNOWSHOE/CROSS-COUNTRY SKI -
Wintertime doesn’t always mean you can’t visit— South of Ouray lies Ironton Park, home to the slumbering remnants of the Ironton townsite. A local group maintains and grooms Nordic trails after fresh snows, including the roughly 2-mile Townsite Loop, which passes by a two-story Victorian house and the Larson Brother’s Mine.

Close to Summit County’s popular ski resorts is Mayflower Gulch Trail. Go six miles south of Copper Mountain to the trailhead, then strap on your showshoes for a four-mile round trip to Boston Mine.

JEEP TOUR - Sometimes it’s easier—but no less thrilling—to let the pros take the wheel. Telluride Outside guide service is happy to oblige with its 4WD tours in beefed-up Chevy trucks. The Imogene Pass itinerary departs from Telluride toward Tomboy on an intermediate road, meaning the tour is suited to all ages, but you’ll still get your kicks.

The Skagen Grey Lighthouse has opened in May to take enthusiastic visitors on a virtual tour to discover and experience the many migratory birds that stop off in the region and surrounding areas.

Whilst September is the month for walkers to gather and lace up their hiking boots for the launch of the Skagen Hiking Festival. Open to everyone, regardless of age or hiking experience, the festival offers the chance to explore some of Denmark’s most magical scenery in the company of other walking enthusiasts.

Walk this way

THE Department of Conservation (DOC) and Tourism New Zealand (TNZ) have joined forces to promote a range of short and day walks.

Research to better understand exactly what kinds of walks Kiwis and international visitors are looking for will kick off soon. Once finalised, the research results will be used along with kiwi, community and stakeholder feedback to help inform what existing walks might be further promoted. These will be in areas that both meet visitor needs and are ready and willing to host more visitors.

“We know there is demand for a range of shorter or less challenging walking options to go alongside our Great Walks and help alleviate pressures at high use sites. The aim is to cater for a wider pool of visitors and enable them to engage with and appreciate New Zealand’s natural environment,” says DOC Director Tourism, Recreation and Heritage, Gavin Walker.

AT the ‘WildeWasserWeg’ trail in the Stubai Valley, you can follow the journey of a water drop from its origins in ice to the rushing stream.
