Explore the beauty of Mt. Everest

THE Everest Base Camp Trek is the best trekking region in #Nepal. Starting from Lukla, a gentle two-day trek up the Dudh Koshi valley leads to the famous Namche Bazaar along the way you can enjoy Nepali and Buddhists culture. Fascinating to know that half of the world population might have a dream to see world highest mountain “Mt. Everest” at 8, 848 m / 29, 028 ft high, once in a life time to experience at its closest the tallest peak on earth.

In Mt. Everest there are some major festivals celebrated in the Khumbu region which are Mani Rimdu and Dumje. Mani Rimdu, which falls in either October or November and is perhaps the most famous festival of the Sherpa people, celebrated for three days interspersed with various ritualistic dances.

Modern Mexico's must visit destinations

MEXICO has a wealth of popular tourism features from the sun and the beach to cuisine, architecture, cultural, and historic experiences. Take a look at modern #Mexico tourism's most thrilling #destinations.

Huasteca - This secret oasis is green, mountainous, and full of waterfalls, forest, and ancient ruins. Ciudad Valles is the second largest town and has a wonderful choice of hotels and restaurants. You can spend your time canoeing, hiking, and visiting the Tamul falls. You’ll be able to organise a trip with locals to navigate up the river, and the Cave of Swallows attracts over a million birds in the early morning and late evening.

Templo Mayor and Teotihuacan - Situated just off the main square at Templo Mayor are the newest pyramids to explore. The excavation site displays stone-carved snakes, and other Aztec artifacts. An hour outside the city is Teotihuacan which hosts two giant pyramids with the Pyramid of the Sun measuring 213 feet tall – you can climb to the tops of both. This area is an archaeological heaven with digs and research still going on.

MUSA - This monumental underwater museum of art was formed in the waters surrounding Cancun. It consists of 500 permanent life-sized sculptures and is one of the largest and most ambitious underwater artificial attractions in the world. All of the sculptures are fixed to the sea bed and made from specialised materials to promote coral life.

Yucatan and Tulum - The Yucatan peninsula is well known for ocean front hotspots Tulum and Holbox, as well as for its Mayan culture, colourful colonial architecture, and local flavours.

The Epic Pass

THE Telluride Ski Resort will join the industry-leading Epic Pass in a long-term alliance beginning with 2018-19 winter season, bringing the total to 46 mountain resorts for #skiers and #snowboarders. Telluride has been rated the “#1 Ski Resort in North America” five of the last six years by readers of Condé Nast Traveller.

Colorado’s San Juan Mountains boast some of ski country’s most incredible terrain, and Telluride is its mecca, stashed amongst the highest concentration of 13,000- and 14,000-foot peaks in North America. The breathtaking scenery is undeniably some of the most beautiful in the Rockies.

Living up to its reputation for legendary terrain, Telluride has something for everyone. The Plunge, Revelation Bowl and Gold Hill offer plenty of steeps for experts. See Forever and Prospect Bowl provide ideal terrain for intermediates and the wide open, gentle slopes of The Sunshine Express and The Meadows start beginners off right while enjoying the endless scenery of the San Juans.

Over the rainbow

THE Vinicunca Mountain, also known as the Rainbow Mountain, is no longer a secret tucked in the central Andes of #Peru. It has become an alternative attraction to the famed Machu Picchu citadel, and nowadays you can find day tours to visit this geological wonder. In fact, it’s becoming one of the top activities to do while in Cusco.

Locals say that the Rainbow Mountain used to be covered in glaciers that melted due to global warming, thus its late touristic discovery. The minerals in the Rainbow Mountain caused the sandstones to acquire a red rust-like color that contrasts the yellow, maroon and turquoise stripes, caused by the presence of other minerals combined with weathering; truly a geological wonder.

The Rainbow Mountain is now more accessible than ever thanks to http://RainbowMountain.Center, where you can book a day trip that leaves from Cusco early in the morning and arrives four hours later to the towns of Chilca or Japura situated at the bottom of the mountain. From there you’ll hike five miles for about two or three hours until you reach the peak. It sounds easy, but it’s actually challenging due to the elevation (17,000 feet).

Getting to the top of the Rainbow mountain involves a steep hike that could be extremely challenging for individuals who are not fully acclimatized to the altitude. It’s recommended you spend at least a couple of days in Cusco prior to the excursion.

Horse rentals and muleteers are also available for travelers not wanting to hike in high altitude. Locals rent horses to take you and your gear up and down covering 98% of the entire trek. There are 2 very steep sections that everyone has to hike on their own for about 10 minutes each in order to protect the horses from exhaustion.

Once you reach the Rainbow Mountain, the most scenic view is to trek to the top of the opposing mountain in order to take the classic Rainbow Mountain picture that is currently so popular in social media. From this summit, you can see the entire Red Valley below. Venturing into the Red Valley below makes you feel as if you are in a completely different planet as the vibrant red and yellow rocks and multi-color sediments create a truly unique environment unlike any other on planet earth.

Drive, bike, hike or ski in the wild west

COLORADO'S
history runs as deep as the silver and gold veins that once lured a surge of fortune seekers here during the late-1800’s mining boom.

But when those rich resources went bust, dozens of towns were abandoned—leaving behind saloons, mercantiles and other hallmarks of Wild West life. Catch glimpses of this bygone era in the remains of ghost towns tucked amid high peaks and remote wilderness.

ATV/OFF-ROAD VEHICLE - Ghost towns in Colorado range from mere ruins to surprisingly intact hamlets—for the latter, venture St. Elmo, where a few lingering residents run a general store and a guesthouse. Seek the help of Buena Vista’sATV Mountain Adventure Rentals, which will drop you and your rented ride off trailside (and pick you up later), leaving you to explore the dusty, straight-out-of-a-movie set streets on your own.

Set your sights on Animas Forks, located high in the San Juan Mountains. Just 12 miles away in Silverton, Rock Pirates Backcountry Adventures can hook you up with one of its rugged Tomcar OHVs for a bumpy-yet-scenic excursion up the Alpine Loop Scenic & Historic Byway.

HIKE - The North Park area is home to Teller City, a former silver-mining camp that at one time boasted 27 saloons, hundreds of log cabins and more than 1,500 residents—not too shabby given its dense-forest location. Head southeast of Walden to the Teller City Interpretive Site, then hit the .75-mil loop trail that winds arounds scattered remains of cabins and other artifacts.

The high-altitude setting of Carson (almost 12,000 feet) makes it all the more rewarding for its views of massive peaks. Lake City, situated near the Continental Divide, is your base for this adventure. Hop on the Alpine Loop Scenic & Historic Byway to Wager Gulch Trailhead. The moderate-to-difficult hike is a steady, 3.4-mile climb leading through open meadows and aspen stands to the Carson site.

BIKE - Eleven miles south of Aspen, Ashcroft is one of a few ghost towns that can be visited year-round. But it would be a shame to miss the vivid colors of wildflower season in late summer or fall’s brilliant foliage—both ideal times for a two-wheeled ride along Castle Creek Road.

Central City escaped a boom-to-bust fate, but hidden just up the hill is Nevadaville, which bustled with some 4,000 people in its heyday. Several original buildings and a few gravesites are left, in addition to the Nevada Lodge No.4, still used by Freemasons for monthly meetings.

SNOWSHOE/CROSS-COUNTRY SKI -
Wintertime doesn’t always mean you can’t visit— South of Ouray lies Ironton Park, home to the slumbering remnants of the Ironton townsite. A local group maintains and grooms Nordic trails after fresh snows, including the roughly 2-mile Townsite Loop, which passes by a two-story Victorian house and the Larson Brother’s Mine.

Close to Summit County’s popular ski resorts is Mayflower Gulch Trail. Go six miles south of Copper Mountain to the trailhead, then strap on your showshoes for a four-mile round trip to Boston Mine.

JEEP TOUR - Sometimes it’s easier—but no less thrilling—to let the pros take the wheel. Telluride Outside guide service is happy to oblige with its 4WD tours in beefed-up Chevy trucks. The Imogene Pass itinerary departs from Telluride toward Tomboy on an intermediate road, meaning the tour is suited to all ages, but you’ll still get your kicks.

Marriott International increases its footprint in Japan

MARRIOTT International has increased its footprint in Japan with the recent opening of five new hotels across #Japan, from lakes near Mt Fuji to golden beaches just south of Osaka.

Each of the five new deluxe hotels is intended as a gateway to explore a lesser-known scenic destination in Japan, from the lake area surrounding Mt Fuji to temples, bamboo groves, hot springs, modern art and even white-sand beaches further afield from Tokyo. These include a secluded mountain resort just over an hour by bullet train from Tokyo, scenic lakes nestled in the foothills of Mt Fuji and on the outskirts of Kyoto, and inviting golden sandy beaches on the southern coast of central Japan just south of Osaka.

The deliberate situating of the hotels in as yet relatively unknown areas of Japan is part of a growing trend to entice international travellers to explore further afield and visit some of Japan’s less familiar destinations, thereby opening a window onto sometimes hidden aspects of its natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Mountain Biking in Scotland

FOLLOWING last weekend’s UCI Fort William Mountain Bike World Cup, a new study by VisitScotland has revealed that mountain biking among domestic visitors generates £43 million a year for the Scottish economy.

The national tourism organisation’s Insight department has produced a new report, Cycling Tourism in Scotland, which also reveals that mountain bikers spend 66 per cent more per night than those who cycle on a road or path during their holiday.

Newly analysed data shows that, typically, 122,000 people a year get on their mountain bikes while on holiday in Scotland, spending £355 per trip*.

The study also shows that 76 per cent of mountain biking visitors to Scotland are male. Most cyclists are aged between 35 and 44, while 25 per cent are 45-54 and 19 per cent are aged between 25 and 34.

Hiking in Austria

POWERFUL giants and petrified wizards, cunning witches and a mystic mountain that quakes deep inside: the stuff of legends now graces the idyllic landscape around Lech-Zürs am Arlberg, Austria. You’ll encounter them on the Green Ring circular trail, a three-stage hike across mountain ridges and valleys, past lakes and waterfalls.

The newest artist-designed trail is the Green Puzzle Ring, home to a trove of secrets worth revealing between Lech and the Rud Alpe.

A literary map created especially for the trail helps hikers to discover each site, even those seemingly hidden and less obvious to the naked eye. From the cablecar journey up to the Rüfikopf and the view of the secluded Zürsersee to strolling through a cotton grass meadow or a picnic in the “Sagenwald” forest of fables.

Curbs needed on Everest climbs

FOR many adventure travellers, the lure of climbing Mt. #Everest is irresistible. Each year, thousands of people pay serious money to take part in climbing expeditions to scale the summit of the world’s highest peak.

For #Nepal, the lure of Everest has been a core attraction to tourists visiting the country. Although Everest climbers make up a very small proportion of tourists to Nepal, they are by far the most lucrative element of the country’s tourist industry. But climbing Everest ranks as one of the most extreme risks in global tourism. No mountain climbing (outside the Himalayas) can fully prepare people for the dangers they face when they exceed 26,000ft. Altitude sickness, exposure, the risk of ice falls and avalanches, and unexpected crevasses are just some of the risks climbers and their Sherpa guides and porters need to overcome. The slopes of Everest are littered with the frozen bodies of those who perished while ascending or descending.

Since the first recorded summiting in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, more than 280 climbers have perished on Everest. In May this year, six climbers, including Australian academic Dr Maria Strydom, died during a climb.

A number of Nepalese based adventure tour operators have expressed serious concern about the sheer number of people who are permitted to climb Everest. In September last year, Nepal’s Ministry of Tourism announced proposals to regulate climbing of Mt. Everest. The rules proposed were:

  • Climbers must be aged between 18-75
  • Permits would be given only to those who can prove that they have already scaled mountains higher than 21, 300ft
  • Disabled and visually-impaired applicants could undertake the climb only if they were able to do so on their own

To date, none of these proposals have been implemented. As things stand, the lure of the tourist dollar seems to dominate the need to enhance the safety of climbing Everest both for climbers and their Sherpa guides and porters. As part of Nepal’s post-earthquake tourism recovery, improving Nepal’s reputation for responsible and sustainable tourism by establishing a set of meaningful and enforced regulations for Everest ascents should be introduced as a matter of urgency.

Peak attractions

JUNGFRAU RAILWAYS in #Switzerland has created three summit attractions on its adventure mountain above Grindelwald and facing the Eiger – a suspension bridge, a cliff walkway, and an observation platform.

Known as the First Cliff Walk by Tissot (the Swiss watch brand), the circular summit trail features a 130ft single-rope suspension bridge built alongside the steep rock face on the western side of the summit.

Open without restriction throughout the year to walkers and hikers, it enables the geologically interesting, stratified cliff face to be seen up close, and makes risk-free vistas across the Alpine pastures and waterfalls below possible. A winding staircase takes visitors up to a sun terrace and an observation platform that seemingly puts the mountainscape with its 13,000ft-high peaks within palpable reach.

The Swatch Group is supporting the attraction with its Tissot watch brand.
