Cornwall to Copenhagen

SCANDINAVIA'S leading airline, SAS, has today announced that it will introduce operations from Cornwall Airport Newquay in 2019.

The airline’s inaugural route from the Airport will link Cornwall directly with Copenhagen, with flights operating Mondays and Fridays over the peak summer season (commencing 28 June 2019).

The new service not only opens a direct link between Cornwall and #Denmark, but also allows for passengers to connect onto a network of over 70 onward destinations in Europe, Asia and North America via a seamless transfer in #Copenhagen, including other popular European cities such as Oslo and Stockholm.

Jutland's last royal castle turn 750 years old

National wonder

IN 2018 Denmark will get a fifth national park in North Sealand. The park will cover a large area of some 25,800 hectares, making it the second largest Danish national park. It will contain Denmark’s two largest lakes, Arresø and Esrum Sø, as well as one of Denmark’s largest forests, Gribskov, and two UNESCO world heritage sites.

Lighthouse on the move

2018 offers the last chance to visit the iconic Rubjerg Knude lighthouse before its moved to a new location. The light in Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse was first illuminated on 27 December 1900, at which point it was more than 200m inland and there were no large dunes around it. 

Over time the sea has moved closer and the wind has blown large amounts of sand up from the cliff. By 1968 the sand was so high it was sometimes impossible to see the lighthouse from the sea, and the light was switched off. Since then, the lighthouse has been under attack from coastal erosion, and is in danger of falling into the sea. So, in the next year or two, the old lighthouse will be dismantled and moved to a new location.

Jazz it up in Copenhagen

IN 2018, Copenhagen’s iconic Jazz Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary. Taking place from July 6–15, Copenhagen Jazz Festival brings together more than 120 venues and around 1,400 concerts, making it one of the largest jazz festivals in the world. The festival presents the best of the contemporary international jazz scene, including the most vibrant Danish acts, and aims to stretch the boundaries of jazz by encouraging new artistic initiatives.

Ski green in Copenhagen

COPENHILL the artificial ski slope and recreational hiking area that is set to open in the autumn of 2018 – will be built on top of Copenhagen’s new green waste management centre. 

The building will stand some 85 metres high, and on the roof of the café at the top of the ski slope there will be a viewing platform with incredible views of the Danish capital. 

Ski equipment will be available to hire, and there will be a green adventure and play landscape on the roof where visitors can wander and explore.

Head to Copenhagen for a romantic break

COPENHAGEN'S famous Tivoli Gardens is renowned the world over for its beautiful illuminations, rides and unique architecture. To celebrate its 175 anniversary next year the Tivoli Gardens will be open from 2–25 February for the first time.

Meanwhile, opened in late 2017, Tivoli Corner is a new development for the northwest corner of Tivoli Gardens, designed to connect the iconic amusement park with Copenhagen’s city centre. This new building will house shops, restaurants, a food hall and hotel rooms for the Nimb hotel, reconnecting Tivoli and the rest of the city.

Breaking the ice in Denmark

THE Winter swimmers, the "Icebreakers" (Isbryderne), hosts the yearly Skagen Winter Swimming Festival, which next year takes place the 25th-28th of January 2018. The event is organized in cooperation with the local Tourist Board Turisthus Nord.

The Skagen Winter Swimming Festival welcomes all true Vikings and guarantees ice cold sea dips, hot drinks, a close encounter with the unique nature of Skagen and a varied program.

Each morning starts of course with a morning sea swim for all participants at "Sønderstrand" near "Grenen".

The Winter Weather in Skagen is raw and gritty, and the winter swimmers therefore put their courage to the test when they meet the ice cold wind and waves. But the atmosphere is fantastic and invigorating! After the cold swim hot soup is served by Jacob's Café.

Haunted Castles and Spooky Family Fun in Denmark

#DENMARK is famed worldwide for its cosy, warm and friendly atmosphere – and the ‘hygge’ is at its best during the chilly Danish autumn and winter, making it the perfect time to visit. But at Halloween, the cosiest country in the world transforms for frights and fun. 

Valdemar’s Castle, a stunning palace on the island of Tåsinge near Svendborg, in southern Denmark, will have a series of spooky Horror Nights from 29 September until 4 November. With several ‘horror zones’ to explore – everything from a war zone to a horrific hospital and mysterious dark forest – be prepared to be scared! There is also ‘The Mind-Blowing Horror Show’ starring Martin Castor, an international show hypnotist with a scarily sharp ability for modern psychological entertainment, mentalism and mind reading.

Esrum Kloster, north of Copenhagen, is hosting an All Saints Evening on 4 November, where guests will be transported to the dark Middle Ages. The darkened monastery will be filled with vivid lights and eerie soundscapes. Enjoy snacks and nibbles while you explore the monastery and walk alongside the souls of the dead. Perhaps even encourage them to let go of this world and move to the ‘other side’.

From 14 October to 22 October, Egeskov Castle, between Odense and Svendborg, will be hosting fun and spooky treasure hunts for children aged 6–12. Meet mysterious creatures and witches as you make your way through a quest to help Count Dracula find his way back to the crypt where he belongs. Egeskov will be decorated for Halloween with pumpkins all over the gardens. The castle grounds also offer holiday cottages for rent and a free campsite.

On 31 October, enjoy All Saints’ Eve at Gammel Estrup – the Old Estrup Manor House Museum located in beautiful natural surroundings 40km from Aarhus. This special night will feature ghost stories by candlelight, atmospheric tours of the dark cellars and the chance to walk through beautifully illuminated paths in the Baroque garden.

Things to do in Skagen

THE most northerly tip of North Jutland is not only home of the picturesque village Skagen but also a hot spot for many migratory birds, and one of Europe’s best bird migration sites. The Skagen Grey Lighthouse has opened in May to take enthusiastic visitors on a virtual tour to discover and experience the many migratory birds that stop off in the region and surrounding areas.

Whilst September is the month for walkers to gather and lace up their hiking boots for the launch of the Skagen Hiking Festival. Open to everyone, regardless of age or hiking experience, the festival offers the chance to explore some of Denmark’s most magical scenery in the company of other walking enthusiasts.

The Great Nordic Feast

THIS autumn, the vivid and soothing flavours of Nordic cuisine will take over London’s Southbank Centre as eight Nordic destinations come together to serve up the tastiest treats from the lands of the midnight sun, for all food lovers to enjoy.

Taking place from 20 – 22 October, The Great Nordic Feast aims to introduce the best tastes and culinary talents from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland as well as the more unknown Nordic countries of the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland to London foodies, through inspiring artisan breakfasts and dinners, hosted by a collaboration of renowned chefs. The autumn feasts will be infused with Nordic flora, talks and music and cooked using traditional Nordic techniques, inside Scandinavian style tipi tents on Southbank Centre’s Festival Terrace.

Gastronomic experts from across the Nordic regions and the UK will combine their talents to serve up a creative Nordic eating experience for food lovers.

Tirpitz – A Hidden Bunker Museum

IN Blåvand, on the coast of South-West Jutland, the Germans started building the Tirpitz Bunker as a part of the Atlantic Wall in 1944 but never finished it. 

In 2017, the Danish architect group, Bjarke Ingels Group, will complete work on an impressive new hidden away, state-of-the-art, glass and grass roofed museum, Tirpitz, in the coastal dunes that will run alongside the WWII bunker. 

Helping to bring the former historic building to life, the museum will comprise four separate exhibition spaces featuring the Atlantic Wall, life on the Danish West Coast, the World’s largest collection of amber and a visiting exhibitions area.

Humberside gets new Danish air link

A ROUTE created to strengthen links between the Humber region and Denmark has been launched at Humberside Airport. 

The route, which operates twice-weekly to Aalborg and Billund, is being operated by British Airways’ franchise partner, SUN-AIR.

As the burgeoning renewables industry continues to grow in the Humber region, with Siemens to start operating in Hull in 2017, the service is expected to create stronger ties to a country which has a dominant renewables industry. The flights are also designed to provide families with opportunities to explore new regions, with Billund Airport situated close to the original Legoland, and Aalborg good for city breaks.

Cuba & Cape Verde tipped as Sharm and Tunisia alternatives

ALL-INCLUSIVE #destinations such as #Cuba and #CapeVerde have been tipped as being among the 2016 alternatives to Sharm el-Sheikh and Tunisia, where flights bans exist.

The predictions come from the analysis of millions of flight searches on Skyscanner from the last three years, combined with qualitative research carried out by the company’s travel experts.

The top five hot spots for 2016, based on the percentage increase in searches from the UK over the last three years, are:

Ponta Delgada, the Azores
With more airlines flying to the Azores, including Ryanair’s new weekly flight from Stansted to Ponta Delgada, this autonomous region of Portugal is opening up as a viable budget travel destination. 

Havana, Cuba
Cuba is back on the world stage as the US restored diplomatic relations in July and continues to loosen restrictions on trade. There might be flights from the US and US hotel chains opening in Cuba in 2016 if more restrictions are lifted. Many people are booking to travel to Cuba to experience the country before it changes –or starts to resemble Miami – and before prices rise as a result.

Tokyo, Japan

Tourism has boomed under the current administration. The national tourist board is actively targeting niche UK markets by focusing on ski, honeymoon, and adventure tourism offerings. Thanks to the excellent value Japan Rail Passes and Airbnb-type accommodation, Tokyo is now 50% cheaper for UK travellers than in 2013, according to the Post Office’s long haul report.

Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen is a popular choice for culture vultures and foodies. Home to the five-month long Tivoli Festival (May to September), classical music fans can expect a star-studded line-up at the Tivoli Gardens. The Copenhagen cooking festival takes place in February showcasing increasingly popular Nordic cuisine, whilst fashionistas have Copenhagen’s Fashion Week, the largest of its kind in Northern Europe.



Sal, Cape Verde
With unspoilt beaches, the island of Sal is only just emerging as a tourist destination. Thomson Airways is adding a new route from Bristol in summer 2016. Sal is also a base for exploring the rest of the archipelago, from the canyons, gorges, and valleys of Santo Antao to the Sahara-like dunes of Boa Vista.
