Travel to Puglia with your morning brew

PUGLIA'S official tourist board has launched a new marketing campaign in association with London based advertising agency CupTheMarket. 150,000 thirsty Londoners will sip their morning brew in Puglia-branded paper cups which will be distributed from 50 coffee shops across the Capital’s zones one and two.

The fully compostable cups will feature captivating designs recalling iconic Apulian landmarks. The Trulli, the countryside, the sea and cactuses are all represented under the strap line ‘#Puglia travel therapy, grab your cup of happiness’. In between City meetings or whilst enjoying their lunch in Hyde Park, potential visitors will be able to link directly to the Tourist board’s landing page through a unique QR code printed on the eco-friendly cups.

A number of cafés will also distribute leaflets inviting customers to snap a selfie with their Puglia paper cups and post it on Instagram using the #weareinpuglia hashtag, with prizes on offer for the best shots.

Luxury sustainable surf programme

SONEVA SURF is an eco-friendly surfing experience, offered at Soneva Fushi in the Baa Atoll and Soneva Jani in the Noonu Atoll in the #Maldives, and is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. In celebration of the launch, WRD has collaborated with respected Australian surf experts, Coastalwatch, to give surfers the opportunity to win a ‘World Surfaris Golden Passport’.

WRD Executive Director, Tess Willcox, said the World Surfaris Golden Passport is an unforgettable surfing experience for two people, involving a year of epic waves at four of the best surfing spots in the world: Samoa, Mentawis, J-Bay, and of course, the Soneva Surf breaks in the Maldives. “There are 13 surf breaks in the Baa Atoll and 11 in the Noonu Atoll, and not only do they boast some of the best waves in the region, they’re a well-kept secret, which means they’re uncrowded and pristine – a surfer’s dream.”

Guests are encouraged to leave everything at home as the resorts provide everything they need, from rash guards to sunscreen, and wax, and everything’s entirely eco-friendly. The eco boards are made from poxy resin, bamboo woven mats; and bio-foam, which comprises materials converted from natural plant materials and they’re manufactured by an approved ECOBOARD builder.

Entry in the competition is simple, visit the Coastalwatch website and sign up to Coastalwatch Plus.

Kids Welcome

ADULTS-only resort in Negril breaks with tradition and welcomes kids. Sunset at the Palms, an all-inclusive resort in Negril, has earned a reputation for being one of the finest adults-only retreats in #Jamaica. The property is also celebrated for its commitment to preserving the natural environment, with guests staying in treehouse-style rooms surrounded by the island nation’s indigenous flora and fauna.

So we suppose it’s only natural that the resort got a little lesson in the the birds and the bees last month, when its pair of now-famous mascots, Betty and Royal Brown, became the proud parents of a set of bouncing baby goats.

For more information about this one-of-a-kind resort that caters to adults – and, well, goats visit www.thepalmsjamaica.com

Take a break in a tiny home on the Isle of Wight

NOW open for business, Tiny Homes Holidays is a new, ethical way to take a break on the Isle of Wight.

The Tiny Homes Holiday concept is all about downsizing your space and upsizing your free time – and living simply in a smallholding environment. It has been created by the people behind Vintage Vacations, the first Airstream caravan holidays in the UK. Like Airstreams, the tiny house movement originated in the US, among people choosing to downsize and live more simply. And the same ethos applies on the Isle of Wight site.

The three architect-designed Tiny Homes – Eilidh, Hygge and Silva – are set in a smallholding environment adjacent to the Parkhurst Forest, with walking trails, cycle routes and wildlife galore, including the Isle of Wight’s famous red squirrels. Tranquil coastlines and the coastal town of Cowes are a cycle ride away.  The development incorporates many eco-friendly measures, including solar power, composting toilets, wood burning stoves and water recycling.

The custom-built 78-foot catamaran will depart Vancouver each morning, taking guests on a whale-watching tour en route to the B.C. Capital. The vessel can carry 95 passengers and everyone will have a great view as each person will have a seat inside the cabin and on the deck. Combining two of Victoria’s “must do” activities, the Salish Sea Dream will offer whale-watching excursions each afternoon from the Inner Harbour and stopping for a visit to the Butchart Gardens as part of the “Whales and Gardens” packages.

“It’s a fantastic trip and it really offers something different,” says Prince of Whales Whale Watching owner Alan McGillivray. “We live in such an amazing part of the world and this gives people a front-row seat to see and learn more about the animals that live in and travel through our waters.”

Marine naturalists and experienced crew will be on board and offer informative talks about marine mammals, birds and other wildlife, as well as the ecosystem and key points of interest. It will be an entertaining and educational trip with a focus on conservation.

Hole In One

THE Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort won in the Nature Protection category in the 2017 IAGTO #Sustainability Awards for its reforestation programme alongside the Kenya Wildlife Service and Rafiki Foundation in the local Eburru community.

Each year global #golf tourism industry body IAGTO (International Association of Golf Tour Operators), in partnership with GEO (Golf Environment Organization), celebrates the outstanding sustainability achievements of golf facilities, resorts and destinations around the world.

Alongside her partners, the Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort will help in restoration of one thousand acres of native forest in Eburru Forest, providing valuable habitat for local wildlife, encouraging biodiversity and protecting watersheds and soil from erosion. The introduction of zebras, impalas, antelopes and reedbucks will also return a balance to the ecosystem and a more natural food-chain cycle.

The Great Rift Valley golf course lies 12 km off the Nairobi to Nakuru highway on the slopes of Eburru Range. From the golf course one can view the Mount Longonot volcano, Lake Naivasha, the Mau escarpment, Mt Kipipiri and the Aberdare ranges. Built to USGA specs with “tiffgreen” grass, the course has 3 par 5’s, 11 par 4’s and 4 par 3’s with the 3rd hole par 3 the most spectacular. Every golf hole is a challenge, with the par 5 - 17th the “signature” hole being 654 yards from the championship tee.

How do we mainstream sustainable tourism?

by Jeremy Smith

THIS QUESTION – which should be at the heart of all our discussions – was the theme of an inspiring event I attended at the United Nations. After two days of discussions, workshops, walking tours, networking events and more, all organized by Travel + Social Good, these were the five thoughts left running round my mind as I try to answer it.

Stop worrying about labels

It really doesn’t matter whether it’s called eco, sustainable, responsible, geo, fair trade, pro-poor tourism or whatever. No one outside of a very small inward-looking clique cares, and it makes those who obsess about such things sound like the People’s Front of Judea from the Life of Brian. It’s called tourism. Either we do it well … or we don’t.

End the snobby ‘I am a traveller … they are tourists’ divide

It’s perfectly possible to go on a responsible, sustainable holiday as a tourist. It’s equally easy to be a selfish, wasteful traveller. It’s not what sort of holiday I choose to take that matters. It’s how I choose to take it.

All tourism is luxury

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization there are about one billion tourists going on foreign holidays each year. It sounds a lot, until you view it in the context of this being a planet of 7.5 billion people. What it means is there were 6.5 billion men, women and children who didn’t nip off for a weekend in Bruges, rent a villa in Tuscany, trek the Camino or see any other country than the one they live and work in for pleasure last year. That’s 86% of the world. Of course some forms of tourism are more luxurious than others. But before we argue the toss between backpacking and glamping, boutique and heritage, cheap flights and Lears, we need to check our collective privilege. Because it’s the 6.5 billion non-tourists who mostly provide our sustainable local food, clean our award-winning eco-lodges, feature in our idyllic snaps of peasant-in-paddy-fields-at-sunset – and more often than not are the ones most negatively affected by the environmental impacts our trips leave behind.

Tourism has to be regenerative

As mentioned in point one, it’s not about the labels. What matters is what we do. It is no longer enough just to aim to reduce tourism’s negative impacts, or even to remove them altogether. We have to make the world better, better for us, and for the 6.5 billion who weren’t lucky enough to go abroad last year. Whether we are working to re-wild denuded habitats, employ circular economy approaches to our supply chains, re-invigorate dwindling cultures, or to nurture an idea that being a human in this world has to be about more than just work – our luxury industry has to leave the world better than we found it. When we start from this premise, our business models become very different indeed.

Know when enough is enough

#Travel has always been driven by the desire to discover new places and explore where no one has gone before. Yet we have reached a point where there are very few of those places left, at the very same time as many of the places we love most have become so saturated with visitors that what lured us there first is being destroyed. It’s one thing to develop destination marketing and management strategies that seek to spread people into less visited areas. But we have also to acknowledge that such an approach must set limits to avoid creating a solution that simply expands the very negative impacts it was adopted to avoid. Otherwise we’re going to end up with all-inclusive resorts in the Antarctic and theme parks in the Galapagos. We need to leave some places alone.

Jeremy Smith is a writer and editor specialising in tourism communication. He works with responsible and sustainable travel businesses, and is co-author of Rough Guides' only guidebook dedicated to responsible tourism, Clean Breaks - 500 New Ways to See the World. www.jmcsmith.co.uk
