Gloriously Green

ONE of the first things people remark on when they visit Glen Avon Lodge Boutique Hotel in Cape Town’s famous Constantia Valley is often its greenery. Usually they are referring to its magnificent rose-filled gardens – but whilst a lot of love and care goes into the grounds, they are not what this 5-star boutique hotel is most proud of. What the Stringer family and the team at Glen Avon is most proud of is their top rating for other green credentials!

General Manager Hans Heuer and his team were delighted with its most recent accolade as a “Green Champion with Distinction”, scoring 88% overall for Sustainable Tourism Management. This recognition as a CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE PROPERTY was awarded by Green Tourism Active which is a non-profit, global sustainability assessment & certification company that is recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and is also a member of the UN World Tourism Organization.

Top five leisure trends for hotels

THERE is no doubt that global leisure travel has been on the increase over the past decade and there are no signs of slow down. According to howmuch.net, the five countries that spend the most on #travel are China ($164.9 billion), the US ($145.7 billion), Germany ($106.6 billion), the UK ($79.9 billion) and France ($59.4 billion). Independent hotels are fantastically placed to capitalise on some of the hottest leisure trends. Below we review the top five trends that independent hotels should be considered as they develop their sales and marketing plans.

1. “Bleisure”: With the frequency of business trips increasing, corporate travellers have had enough to being stuck in the endless cycle of the hotel to office and back to the hotel. More and more, we are seeing corporate guests opting to extend their business trips by adding on some time for leisure.

2. Millennials: This demographic is causing titanic shifts in all industries, so of course, they are also changing the very nature of leisure travel. Contrary to popular belief, according to a new report by Merrill Edge, millennials are saving money, with 81% say they are more likely to spend that money on travel.

3. The quest for new experiences: The World Travel & Tourism Council reported that the countries showing the strongest international travel and tourism growth in 2017 were: Myanmar, Sudan, Azerbaijan, Qatar, Sao Tome & Principe and Sri Lanka. These are probably not the places that came to mind immediately when you were planning your last holiday but, it’s crucial to remember that a key driver of today’s leisure travel is travellers looking for adventure and new experiences.

4. Female travellers: Forbes reports that women account for 80% of purchases related to travel and tourism. From deciding on the place to visit and why type of holiday to booking the tickets and reserving the hotel and restaurants, women are making these decisions.

5. Responsible travel: The United Nations designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organisation, said, “This is a unique opportunity to advance the contribution of the tourism sector to the three pillars of sustainability – economic, social and environmental while raising awareness of the true dimensions of a sector which is often undervalued.”

Go Green in Monaco

THE Monaco Government and Tourist Authority, Visit #Monaco, is delighted to announce the launch of the principality’s ‘Green is the New Glam’ campaign to become a destination that is as environmentally conscious as it is glamorous.

Home to the hugely successful Monaco e-Rally, the eco-responsible Grimaldi Forum and Cultural Centre, and the marine conservation Monaco Blue Initiative attended annually by experts in ocean management and conservation from the UN, UNESCO, European Commission and more, Monaco has long made bridging the gap between luxury and sustainability a priority. The ‘Green is the New Glam’ campaign aims to build on this commitment and bring it to the forefront of the principalities agenda.

Several targets have been put in place in order to achieve this, including the ultimate goals of cutting greenhouse gas emissions before 2030 by 50 percent compared with 1990 levels and of achieving total carbon neutrality by 2050.

With 386,000 trips made daily within the 2.02km-squared principality, new transportation options have made it easier for citizens and tourists alike to reduce their carbon footprint. 17 bike stations, a solar powered bus boat and a dozen hybrid buses are available, while two Tesla-compatible charging stations mean that eco-conscious travellers can still experience the thrill of Monaco’s iconic roads and hairpin bends in style.

Paris, a green and eco-responsible destination

IN addition to its 460 public parks and gardens, #Paris has important ecological aspects that tourists can experience. Non-motorized and public modes of transport are favoured: the creation of bus lanes, the extension of the Paris tramway, the development of self-service bicycles and Autolib’, 16 highly-efficient metro lines — despite being over a century old.

The pedestrianization of the riverside expressways (Left Bank since 2013, Right Bank since September 2016) with the creation of the Parc Rives de Seine, and the redeveloped Place de la République also contribute to making the city greener and more dynamic. The Place de la Nation is soon to be redeveloped as well as the iconic Place de la Bastille, where the lower part of the Colonne de Juillet will be open to the public, from 2018.

The Parisian hotel sector continues to be more committed to eco-responsible initiatives — more than 460 Parisian establishments have signed the Tourist Office’s Charter ‘For Sustainable Accommodation in Paris’, and the adoption of ecological labels continues to increase.

World’s first carbon-neutral travel company

SETTING the sustainability bar higher than it had ever been set before, Natural Habitat Adventures became the world’s first carbon-neutral #travel company in 2007. Now, in 2017, Nat Hab celebrates the 10-year anniversary of its carbon offset program, a groundbreaking endeavor that has since offset more than 34.5 million pounds of CO2 for guests’ nature adventures in destinations all around the globe.

As the #conservation travel partner of World Wildlife Fund, Nat Hab noted early the impacts of globetrotting clients on a changing climate. The EPA estimates that about 14 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions are travel-related. Offsetting carbon emissions became mission critical for this nature travel company.

Nat Hab’s carbon offsets encompass every aspect of each adventure—from vehicles on safari in Africa and the American Southwest, to marine diesel in the Galapagos, to energy consumed in lodges all around the world. Carrying through on this promise involves complex calculations—but it’s a commitment that remains core to Nat Hab’s company values as a world leader in conservation travel.

Take a break in a tiny home on the Isle of Wight

NOW open for business, Tiny Homes Holidays is a new, ethical way to take a break on the Isle of Wight.

The Tiny Homes Holiday concept is all about downsizing your space and upsizing your free time – and living simply in a smallholding environment. It has been created by the people behind Vintage Vacations, the first Airstream caravan holidays in the UK. Like Airstreams, the tiny house movement originated in the US, among people choosing to downsize and live more simply. And the same ethos applies on the Isle of Wight site.

The three architect-designed Tiny Homes – Eilidh, Hygge and Silva – are set in a smallholding environment adjacent to the Parkhurst Forest, with walking trails, cycle routes and wildlife galore, including the Isle of Wight’s famous red squirrels. Tranquil coastlines and the coastal town of Cowes are a cycle ride away.  The development incorporates many eco-friendly measures, including solar power, composting toilets, wood burning stoves and water recycling.

New Travel Website on Northeast India

GREENER
Pastures, a boutique #eco-travel outfit based in the remote region of Northeast India has recently relaunched its website. The relaunch of the website comes at a crucial time as more and more travelers both from India and around the world have started to visit Northeast India in increasing numbers. Many who travel the region find it difficult to deal with the lack of information on destinations along with the developing infrastructure.

Co-founder Vaivhav Todi talks about some of the highlights "We really wanted to create something unique with the website that could portray our love for Northeast India. It is disappointing to see that such a breathtaking place has less information available online and that most websites are still to utilize the latest trends in web designing and development. Keeping this as a focus, we have done our best to keep the website light, user friendly and minimal, combining it with journalistic driven content, breathtaking photography and equally fascinating illustrations and colors."

Right from the homepage the website is heavy on beautiful imagery. A section on destinations is present to introduce visitors to the seven different states of Northeast #India, with information on cultures, environment, history, festivals and climate.

Experiences have been well categorized making it easy for travelers to find the right tour or adventure of their choice. Further, there are numerous beautiful illustrated travel maps that were commissioned to illustrators that portray the geography and feel of the region and the various activities available.

Visit the new website at www.thegreenerpastures.com

Travel and Sustainability

THE United Nations has designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

More than one billion international tourists travel the world each year, which means that tourism provides millions of jobs and is crucial for national and local economies, not least in the developing world.

More than many other industries, tourism relies on a stable climate, and is already being impacted by increased incidents of storms and heatwaves, desertification, fresh water loss, rising sea levels that threaten coastal resorts, and diminished snowfall in alpine skiing areas.

This year is an opportunity to look at how tourism is affected by climate change and how emissions from the sector can be curbed, along with finding ways for the industry to better adapt to the inevitable impacts of rising global average temperatures.

Seychelles signs sustainable tourism charter

THE #Seychelles minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine, Alain St.Ange, signed the African Charter on Sustainable and Responsible Tourism during the recent UN climate change talks in Morocco. The document aims to provide the African continent with a common framework to promote best practices in #sustainable #tourism.

As a country that relies on the travel industry, Seychelles has been particularly active in preserving its natural heritage.

As much as 50% of the Seychelles’ territory consists of protected National Parks and the country has gone so far as to limit the number of tourist beds per island to ensure that tourism growth does not come at the expense of the environment.

Seychelles is found to have the purest air on the planet by the 2016 Environmental Performance Index and it is currently developing renewable energy sources.

How do we mainstream sustainable tourism?

by Jeremy Smith

THIS QUESTION – which should be at the heart of all our discussions – was the theme of an inspiring event I attended at the United Nations. After two days of discussions, workshops, walking tours, networking events and more, all organized by Travel + Social Good, these were the five thoughts left running round my mind as I try to answer it.

Stop worrying about labels

It really doesn’t matter whether it’s called eco, sustainable, responsible, geo, fair trade, pro-poor tourism or whatever. No one outside of a very small inward-looking clique cares, and it makes those who obsess about such things sound like the People’s Front of Judea from the Life of Brian. It’s called tourism. Either we do it well … or we don’t.

End the snobby ‘I am a traveller … they are tourists’ divide

It’s perfectly possible to go on a responsible, sustainable holiday as a tourist. It’s equally easy to be a selfish, wasteful traveller. It’s not what sort of holiday I choose to take that matters. It’s how I choose to take it.

All tourism is luxury

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization there are about one billion tourists going on foreign holidays each year. It sounds a lot, until you view it in the context of this being a planet of 7.5 billion people. What it means is there were 6.5 billion men, women and children who didn’t nip off for a weekend in Bruges, rent a villa in Tuscany, trek the Camino or see any other country than the one they live and work in for pleasure last year. That’s 86% of the world. Of course some forms of tourism are more luxurious than others. But before we argue the toss between backpacking and glamping, boutique and heritage, cheap flights and Lears, we need to check our collective privilege. Because it’s the 6.5 billion non-tourists who mostly provide our sustainable local food, clean our award-winning eco-lodges, feature in our idyllic snaps of peasant-in-paddy-fields-at-sunset – and more often than not are the ones most negatively affected by the environmental impacts our trips leave behind.

Tourism has to be regenerative

As mentioned in point one, it’s not about the labels. What matters is what we do. It is no longer enough just to aim to reduce tourism’s negative impacts, or even to remove them altogether. We have to make the world better, better for us, and for the 6.5 billion who weren’t lucky enough to go abroad last year. Whether we are working to re-wild denuded habitats, employ circular economy approaches to our supply chains, re-invigorate dwindling cultures, or to nurture an idea that being a human in this world has to be about more than just work – our luxury industry has to leave the world better than we found it. When we start from this premise, our business models become very different indeed.

Know when enough is enough

#Travel has always been driven by the desire to discover new places and explore where no one has gone before. Yet we have reached a point where there are very few of those places left, at the very same time as many of the places we love most have become so saturated with visitors that what lured us there first is being destroyed. It’s one thing to develop destination marketing and management strategies that seek to spread people into less visited areas. But we have also to acknowledge that such an approach must set limits to avoid creating a solution that simply expands the very negative impacts it was adopted to avoid. Otherwise we’re going to end up with all-inclusive resorts in the Antarctic and theme parks in the Galapagos. We need to leave some places alone.

Jeremy Smith is a writer and editor specialising in tourism communication. He works with responsible and sustainable travel businesses, and is co-author of Rough Guides' only guidebook dedicated to responsible tourism, Clean Breaks - 500 New Ways to See the World. www.jmcsmith.co.uk

ABTA urges industry to embrace sustainability

TRAVEL companies and hotels are being urged by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) to take part in ‘Make Holidays Greener’ month in July. More than 40 hotels and #travel businesses have already signed up to raise awareness of sustainable holidays, and of the importance of keeping beaches clean.

Throughout the summer, the campaign will encourage holidaymakers to take care of the local #environment and support local communities in holiday destinations.

Nikki White from ABTA and Travelife said: ‘Cleaner, greener beaches are good for tourism and our industry is uniquely placed to make a difference to coastal regions and beaches globally. We are encouraging as many travel businesses as possible to sign up and support Make Holidays Greener month and do their bit to keep beaches clean.

‘We’re delighted with the response we’ve had so far, but we’re really keen for more hotels and travel companies to get involved – it’s a great way to show their customers and staff that they really care about their environment. Cleaner beaches are good for wildlife, for people, and for business, so it’s important that holidaymakers and the industry work together to take care of destinations and protect the marine environment.’

Companies not based near a beach can organize a different type of event, such as a park or mountain clean-up. The campaign website – makeholidaysgreener.org.uk – has a range of free resources, including advice on how to organize a beach clean.

Last year, 108 beach cleans were organized worldwide, involving 68 organizations and more than 1,000 people in 20 countries.
