Eruptions in the Galapagos Islands

LA CUMBRE Volcano in the #Galapagos Islands began erupting on 16 June 2018, creating spectacular laze clouds and steam explosions as the lava flow reached the shore line. The volcano forms the uninhabited Fernandina Island and is the most active volcano in the archipelago. 

Emissions and tremors have decreased however the situation is unpredictable, and a safe distance should be kept. Passengers on cruises in the area have been able to witness the dramatic eruptions from a safe distance with no impact on itineraries. 

Local authorities are monitoring the situation on Fernandina as well as neighbouring Isabela Island that is on yellow alert, although viewpoints on the rim of the Chico Volcano still open to visitors. Any travellers planning to visit the Galapagos Islands in the near future should monitor the situation however all tourist activities are currently not impacted and remain open for business.

Support for single-use plastic ban in the Galapagos

SPECIALISING in small group trips to Latin America, Southern Explorations has announced its full support of a new ban of single-use plastics in the #Galapagos Islands.  The ban, created to protect marine and wildlife and their habitats from the detrimental affects of plastic waste, will roll out in phases over four months and affects all residents, tour operators and visitors.

New Plastic Restrictions in the Galapagos, Starting the Summer of 2018.  The Galapagos Governing Council announced the plastic ban in April 2018. Each type of single-use plastic will be banned starting on the following dates:

May 22, 2018: plastic straws
June 21, 2018: single-use plastic bags
July 21, 2018: polythene take out containers
August 21, 2018: non returnable beverage containers

Galakiwi guiding the way

For the #GalapagosIslands, Facing Waves will follow a group of Galakiwi adventurers around the islands for 10 days. With the support of the Ministry of Tourism and permits from the Galapagos National Park, a film crew will capture the spirit of adventure and responsible land tourism in the Galapagos Islands.

By visiting San Cristobal, Floreana, Isabela and Santa Cruz the wide range of ecosystems, wildlife and activities will be on full display for viewers to see the wonders of the Galapagos.

Tour the Galapagos Islands on a stand up paddleboard

SAN CRISTOBEL based Galakiwi Adventures has launched the most in-depth #SUP tour of the #Galapagos Archipelago.

Tim Cooney, said "We've had SUPs in our office in the Galapagos for many years, but felt it was finally time to offer them on our public tours. This new tour is all about enjoying the beautiful water in the Galapagos. We have packed this trip full of SUP, snorkel, swim and kayak options."

This 10-day Galapagos SUP tour includes some activity on the water almost every day. It is suitable for people with any level of SUP experience, as each SUP activity can be substituted for kayaking.

Visiting Santa Cruz, Isabela and San Cristobal, this SUP tour is set to launch in January 2017, with departures every other week.
