GFEST 2018

THE annual November LGBTQI+ entertainment and cross-art event GFEST – Gaywise FESTival will be launched on Monday the 12 November at Alexandra Palace, Palm Court. GFEST 2018 events will be listed on the website: https://gaywisefestival.org.uk

The Musical North East

THE Hartlepool Folk Festival is celebrating its fourth year with a newly-announced grant from Arts Council England. The festival, which has sold out for the last two years, is also upscaling its mainstage events from the 400-seat Hartlepool Town Hall Theatre to the 1200-seat Borough – a testament to the event’s popularity, artistic quality, and its contribution to the region’s cultural life – and will take place from 19th – 21st October.

Those who prefer jazz to folk are encouraged to head to Middlesbrough Town Hall’s Jazz Weekender, which takes place on the same weekend as Hartlepool’s Folk Festival. Programmed by Gateshead International Jazz Festival’s Ros Rigby, the Jazz Weekender will include a nod to the past, but also firmly look to the future, the festival is set to be an action-packed weekend in celebration of the genre.

What sound makes your holiday?

HEATHROW, Europe’s largest hub airport is encouraging travellers to go one step further in capturing their holiday moments this year by asking them to capture their perfect Sound Escapes, creating an even more evocative way of capturing memories than a classic photo.

It is well known that brains connect sounds to emotions, making it an important part of the feeling and memory of a holiday. From the buzz of children’s laughter and soft rustling palm trees to local musician’s beats, lapping sea waves and city cabs honking, these distinctive holiday sounds capture the very essence of a holiday. Submissions by the public over four months, will be refined and collated into a captivating and immersive soundscape by award-winning composer and sound artist Nick Ryan.

Holidaymakers are invited to submit up to a minute of their sounds to soundescapes@heathrow.com, with the resulting one-of-a-kind soundtrack, created by award-winning composer and sound artist Nick Ryan, revealed in January 2019 for travellers to experience, enjoy and use as inspiration for the next getaway.

THE theme of Kendal Torchlight 2018 is ‘Books & Authors, from literary classics to more modern favourites. Kendal’s Torchlight Carnival is one of a kind to be held this year on September 14. 

Every year people line the streets to watch the procession, which involves local businesses, schools, organisations and clubs. From decorated floats and all manner of vehicles, to dancing troupes and marching musicians.

Next global act to perform at this year's Yasalam After-Race Concert

YAS Marina Circuit and FLASH Entertainment have revealed the next global act to perform at this year's Yasalam After-Race Concert as part of the Formula 1 2018 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend. Sam Smith has been confirmed as the headline performer for Saturday 24 November's Yasalam After-Race Concert at the du Arena, Yas Island.

Since #AbuDhabiGrandPrix tickets were launched worldwide in March, interest has been extremely high with West Grandstand, West Club and Abu Dhabi Hill two-day tickets having already sold out and only a limited number of fan favourite three-day Abu Dhabi Hill tickets available.

The addition of the new one-day Friday products, allows ticket holders to build their weekend with a General Admission two-day or Hospitality two-day Marsa Suite, Terrace Hospitality and Champions Club ticket with a one-day Friday Paddock Club or Club at Trackside Terrace Friday.

Ticket holders can also take their weekend up a gear by purchasing 'Golden Circle' upgrade tickets for the Yasalam After-Race Concerts.

There's only four weeks remaining to buy 'Early Bird' tickets for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, offering 20 per cent discounts to race fans across a range of ticket packages, 'Early Bird' tickets will be available until 31 July.

Shining brighter than ever

VIVID Sydney has kicked off its 10th-anniversary celebrations in style, with more than 330,000 Vivid Light Walk attendees turning out for the opening weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) of the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas. 

Weekends are by far the busiest time to see the lights and people are reminded that from tonight through until Sunday night there will be a one-way walking route in place on the Light Walk, so it’s important to plan ahead and be patient. 

Since launching the 2018 festival program, VividSydney.com has had more than a million visitors, the app has been downloaded almost 30,000 times and visitors are spreading the joy on social media. More than 13,000 people have already used the VividSydney hashtag and over 10,000 have shared incredible images and videos from the festival across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Barry Manilow returns to Las Vegas

BARRY Manilow has announced that he will be returning to Las Vegas with a brand new stage production to perform his extensive catalog of hits as the exclusive headliner at the Westgate International Theater at Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino.

The legendary entertainer will return to where he previously made his spectacular residency debut on February 24, 2005. The 85-minute show will celebrate his well-loved greatest hits.

Show dates going on sale will be May 24-26, June 14-16, June 21-23, July 19-21, July 26-28, Oct. 4-6 and Oct. 11-13.

Festival vibes in Normandy

Beauregard, 6-9 July – Hérouville Saint-Clair (near Caen) Set in the beautiful grounds of the Château de Beauregard, the popular Beauregard Festival’s star-studded line-up, chilled-out vibe and proximity to both Ouistreham port and Caen-Carpiquet airport means that it appeals to both families and friends heading over from the UK.  

3) Rock in Évreux, 29 June- 1 July – Évreux Don’t let the name Rock in Evreux fool you: rock is sure to shake Evreux, but a sonic sound clash of electro beats, hip-hop breaks and driving rhythms will also fill the summer air on its racecourse. Easy to get to by train from London via Paris, this festival comes in first place for anyone who doesn’t want to take the car! 

4) Hello Birds, 6-8 July – Étretat This free event is held in legendary Étretat, world-renowned for its iconic cliffs overlooking the Channel, and includes live shows and DJ sets on the beach. 

5) Cabourg Mon Amour, 29 June-1 July – Cabourg This hip, intimate festival caters to the indie crowd and takes place on a beautiful sandy beach in the swish seaside resort of Cabourg.

IMAGINE an arts and culture extravaganza where the backdrop is just as impressive as the star performers on stage. Welcome to Festival 2018 – 12 fabulous days of diverse entertainment held in conjunction with the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games from April 4-15. 

The Festival 2018 program features more than 1000 holiday-highlight experiences across the genres of music, theatre, circus, dance, ideas, visual arts and film. 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage

THE official countdown to the 400th anniversary of the #Mayflower voyage will begin this Thanksgiving with a series of Illuminate events being held across eight destinations in the UK with links to the Mayflower Pilgrims. Each Illuminate event will include a range of events and activities including innovative light-based artworks, local choir performers and parades which reflect themes of freedom and liberty. 

This four nation commemoration aims to unite the nations of the UK, US, Netherlands and Native American people. The origin of the event and the light symbolism at the heart of Illuminate comes from a quote by William Bradford, one of the Mayflower Pilgrims who later became Governor of Plymouth Plantation: “‘…just as one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled hath shone unto many”.

In 2019, Illuminate will open the year-long #anniversary programme, and the commemorations will culminate in 2020 with a final Illuminate event. The aim is that the events of Illuminate do not stop after 2020 and that Illuminate will become a traditional and annual event. Each destination will have improved and developed their ability, knowledge and expertise to deliver high quality, high spectacle, light based, artist led participatory events for years to come.

Celebrate Indonesian Independence with music

INDONESIAN composer Ananda Sukarlan and Australian Indigenous musician Djakapurra Munyarrun will perform together in Jakarta to celebrate the 72th anniversary of Indonesian Independence.

Taking its name from the Makassar term for Arnhem Land in northern Australia, the Voyage to Marege concert is inspired by the connections between the Yolngu people from North East Arnhem Land and the Bugis traders from Makassar.

The concert is a celebration of the deep bonds between #Australia and #Indonesia. It will be held on 31 August 2017 at Teater Jakarta, Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) Jakarta.

Music to your ears

A new route to Music City will be music to traveller’s ears with British Airways’ new service to Nashville.

From May 2018, British Airways will launch a five-a-week service from Heathrow, Terminal 5 and will be the only airline flying direct between Europe and the capital of Tennessee.

The new route takes the number of US destinations the airline flies to from London in summer 2018 up to 26, and the number of daily flights offered by British Airways and American Airlines as part of their transatlantic joint business up to 67 per day.

The route will be operated by a Boeing 787-8, with return fares in World Traveller starting from £749, £1196 in World Traveller Plus and £1849 in Club World available to book now on ba.com.

Lighting up the Borders

LIGHTING the Borders, designated a signature event for Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, will see sites such as Floors Castle, Ayton Castle and Peniel Heugh flooded with blue light for three nights from Friday 1 September to Sunday 3 September.

In addition, 11 of the sites will also host special free and ticketed events over those three days, including music, theatre and living history, celebrating and reflecting on the region’s history, heritage and cultural diversity.

The Scottish Borders Heritage Festival, which runs throughout September and includes over 200 events, is being delivered by Live Borders in partnership with Scottish Borders Council and the Borders Heritage Forum.
