Wuzhen Theater Festival

IN the sixth Wuzhen Theater Festival, which will be held from October 18 to 28, 2018, in addition to the list of theatrical performances specially invited to the event, represented by masters of the world theatrical and operatic, there will be an Outdoor Carnival that will be presented to more than 100 companies and performances that will perform more than 1800 works in the district of Xizha in Wuzhen during the 11 days of the event.

From literary classic to modern favourites

THE theme of Kendal Torchlight 2018 is ‘Books & Authors, from literary classics to more modern favourites. Kendal’s Torchlight Carnival is one of a kind to be held this year on September 14. 

Every year people line the streets to watch the procession, which involves local businesses, schools, organisations and clubs. From decorated floats and all manner of vehicles, to dancing troupes and marching musicians.

Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival

ON June 22-24, local and international teams will descend on the buzzing city of Hong Kong for the annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival, which is also known as the Tuen Ng Festival. 

The carnival dates back 2,000 years and commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a Chinese national hero. 

The highlight event takes place on Victoria Harbour where fierce-looking dragon boats compete in a lively colourful spectacle. Teams of 12-28 paddlers race the elaborately decorated dragon boats, to the beat of heavy drums and encouragement of spectators.

Isle of Wight Mardi Gras 2018

THE Isle of Wight Mardi Gras always adopts a relevant and educational theme allowing school and community groups to undertake a programme of research and learning prior to designing, producing and performing spectacular carnival costumes.

Themes in recent years have included ‘Shakespeare 400’ commemorating the anniversary of the passing of the Bard and ‘Reflections of India’ celebrating the links between the Island, Queen Victoria and India on the 70th anniversary of the country’s independence.

In 2018 the theme will be ‘Global Biospheres’ and will be produced to support the IW Area of Outstanding Beauty’s application to have the Island recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

A shore thing

THE Whitsundays’ reputation as a world-class sailing destination is riding high with Airlie Beach to be a host port for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in 2018.

Tourism and Major Events Minister Kate Jones said the carnival was expected to attract more than 4000 visitors to the Whitsundays and generate more than $3 million for the local economy.

“The Whitsundays is a jewel in our tourism crown so for it to be confirmed as a host port for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is another significant achievement,” she said.

“We all know the impact of Tropical Cyclone Debbie on this community but we also know the resilience and determination of the people and businesses in the Whitsundays.”

Airlie Beach will host the 12 yachts, their skippers and their international crew and supporters as the final stop of the Australian leg of the race, but the stopover will be complemented by a festival set to include a large scale welcome event, a regional rodeo and a spectacular lunch on the iconic Whitehaven Beach.

Toronto Caribbean Festival turns 50 this year.

Carnival in Gozo

CARNIVAL fever starts in #Gozo on Sunday February 19 with events planned in several locations over a period of seven days.

Malta Public Transport has said that it will be operating a special public transport service to facilitate travel and accessibility to those attending the Carnival in Nadur, between the 24th and the 26th of February.

Crop Over Festival

IF you're looking to have fun and celebrate in style head to #Barbados from the second Saturday in July to experience the crop over festival which runs for 24 days. The festival is one of the most colourful and popular festivals in the world.

Events take place all over Barbados at multiple locations with the most popular events being Kadooment, Pic-o-de-Crop Finals, Foreday Morning Jam, Soca Royale with the major events generally occur in St Michael.

It all originated when Barbados was the worlds largest producer of sugar and at the end of the sugar season, there was always a huge celebration to mark the end of another successful sugar cane harvest - the Crop Over celebration.

In the 1940's the festival was terminated as the sugar industry in Barbados declined but it was revived in 1974. Other elements of Barbadian culture were infused to create the festival that exists today, attracting thousands of travellers from all over the world.

124,000 blooms set to blossom for the 2016 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers

THE 67th Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers runs from September 16-25 this year with a programme of headliners in music, food, wine, flowers and gardening making it one of the country's most amazing events.

Since it began in 1949 the annual event has flourished and is now one of Queenslands stand out events featuring more than 50 unique events and experiences including internationally acclaimed musical acts, award winning parks, some of the best food and wine to be found in Southern Queensland and a multitude of cultural adventures.

#Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said the Carnival was and would continue to be a standout event on the Australian calendar.  “ With 67 years of floral magic under its belt, the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers continues to build audiences and extend programming parameters, both important milestones as a leading event for locals and visitors alike,” he said. 

“This year’s floral program is one of the best, promising breathtaking displays of botanic brilliance across floral exhibits, fresh flower markets, glorious garden tours, floristry competitions and more. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Toowoomba in September.”

See Somerset lit up

THE Guy Fawkes fireworks #carnivals in November are among the highlights of the year in Somerset, when brilliantly lit and decorated floats – or carts, as they’re known locally – parade through the packed streets of some of the county’s main towns 

Medieval in origin, they were banned during the 19th century because of the bawdy and unruly behaviour they inspired.

Many visitors book an overnight stay, or catch several carnivals, making them the focus of a family-friendly autumn holiday.

The carnival towns in November are: Bridgwater, Burnham On Sea, Weston-Super-Mare, North Petherton, Shepton Mallet, Wells, Glastonbury and Wincanton which is tonight 16th October at 7.30pm

Whichever one you choose, check the route, arrive early as some roads may be closed, dress warm, be prepared for big crowds and a show lasting several hours, and bring plenty of loose change … it’s a free show, and there are collections for charities.
