Pace yourself in paradise

REGISTRATIONS are now open for one of the biggest mainland attractions in the Whitsundays. The Cruise Whitsundays Airlie Beach Running Festival is now in its sixth year and attracts around 2,000 people including runners, their families and friends. The focus of the festival, which is due to take place on Sunday, July 22, has changed slightly this year, with proceeds going towards two vital services in the region – the RACQ CQ Rescue Helicopter and the Ronald McDonald House, in Townsville.

Tourism Whitsundays Sales & Marketing Manager Tash Wheeler said the Airlie Beach Running Festival had become one of the biggest events on the #Whitsundays mainland calendar.

“The Airlie Beach Running Festival is a great event that sees the sport’s best athletes running along with members of the local community and there is a fantastic atmosphere in town the whole weekend,” she said. “Many entrants add a few days either side of the running festival so they can have a holiday in the wonderful Whitsundays at the same time. What more could you ask for – a sporting event that the whole family can participate in with a stay in paradise as well!”

A shore thing

THE Whitsundays’ reputation as a world-class sailing destination is riding high with Airlie Beach to be a host port for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in 2018.

Tourism and Major Events Minister Kate Jones said the carnival was expected to attract more than 4000 visitors to the Whitsundays and generate more than $3 million for the local economy.

“The Whitsundays is a jewel in our tourism crown so for it to be confirmed as a host port for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is another significant achievement,” she said.

“We all know the impact of Tropical Cyclone Debbie on this community but we also know the resilience and determination of the people and businesses in the Whitsundays.”

Airlie Beach will host the 12 yachts, their skippers and their international crew and supporters as the final stop of the Australian leg of the race, but the stopover will be complemented by a festival set to include a large scale welcome event, a regional rodeo and a spectacular lunch on the iconic Whitehaven Beach.

Welcome to the Whitsundays

THE Whitsundays will feature in a massive online marketing campaign as part of an ongoing partnership with Expedia and Wotif.

The region’s marketing and visitor attraction agency, Tourism Whitsundays, is partnering with Expedia Media Solutions on a 12-month campaign occurring across Wotif.com and Expedia.com.au to drive awareness and sales to the Whitsundays.

The Expedia group will promote the Whitsundays through a branded landing page on its website, as well as social media, blogs, e-newsletters and display adverts. Tourism Whitsundays will do the same and Whitsunday tourism operators are being encouraged to provide attractive deals and offers as part of the campaign.

Tourism campaign boost for the Whitsundays

AUSTRALIA'S most iconic tourism brands are joining forces to encourage more Australians to holiday in cyclone–affected #Whitsundays.

Tourism Minister Kate Jones said the marketing push includes $1 million worth of support to sell #Queensland #holiday destinations interstate.

“With Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ), the Flight Centre Travel Group and Virgin Australia behind this campaign, the Whitsundays know they have not been forgotten,” Ms Jones said.

“TEQ and Flight Centre will invest $1 million in marketing activity with a strong focus on the Whitsundays region. The three-month campaign will be supported by Virgin Australia and Infinity Holidays.  On offer will be discounted airfares when a minimum of four nights of selected accommodation is booked across the Whitsundays, Gold Coast, and Tropical North Queensland.

“There’ll be an exclusive promotion of the Whitsundays during the month of June.
