Full steam ahead

THE Talyllyn Railway was the first of the small railways to be rescued by a preservation society, and is now one of the Great Trains of Wales. Race the Train takes place Saturday August 18th, alongside as far as practicable the route taken by the Talyllyn Railway on its journey to Abergynolwyn and back. In order to do this all courses use a mixture of public roads, lanes, un-metalled roads, tracks, agricultural land, and rough grazing pastures.

A must for all multi - terrain runners many of whom return regularly to try and better their performance or just beat that train while others have run nearly every year since the races started. The challenge of not only racing your fellow competitor’s but also the Train. Having been televised world-wide on several occasions we have attracted many runners from abroad coming from as far away as New Zealand, Australia, America, Hong Kong, Africa etc.

Pace yourself in paradise

REGISTRATIONS are now open for one of the biggest mainland attractions in the Whitsundays. The Cruise Whitsundays Airlie Beach Running Festival is now in its sixth year and attracts around 2,000 people including runners, their families and friends. The focus of the festival, which is due to take place on Sunday, July 22, has changed slightly this year, with proceeds going towards two vital services in the region – the RACQ CQ Rescue Helicopter and the Ronald McDonald House, in Townsville.

Tourism Whitsundays Sales & Marketing Manager Tash Wheeler said the Airlie Beach Running Festival had become one of the biggest events on the #Whitsundays mainland calendar.

“The Airlie Beach Running Festival is a great event that sees the sport’s best athletes running along with members of the local community and there is a fantastic atmosphere in town the whole weekend,” she said. “Many entrants add a few days either side of the running festival so they can have a holiday in the wonderful Whitsundays at the same time. What more could you ask for – a sporting event that the whole family can participate in with a stay in paradise as well!”

The Czech Republic Celebrates 100 Years in 2018

THE Czech Republic invites tourists from around the world to commemorate the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918 following the end of World War I. To mark the one-hundredth anniversary, hundreds of cultural, social and sporting events will take place throughout the year that highlight the period known as the First Republic, that is, the twenty years between the First and Second World Wars.

Czechoslovakia was founded in the aftermath of World War I as one of the successor states of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Central European country then existed (with a brief interlude during World War II) from October 28, 1918 to December 31, 1992, before officially splitting on January 1, 1993 to form the independent Czech and Slovak Republics.

In 2018, both countries will be celebrating one-hundred years of existence and commemorating all that they have shared with the world together.
