Out and About in Austria

AUSTRIANS love to throw a festival, a parade, anything to have a ball - there’s even a season for balls! Every month of the year is rich with wonderful events. Concerts and arts festivals take world-class to a new stage, whether floating on a picturesque lake or ringing out from the mountain top. Here are just a few of the amazing events you can join in on.

New Year’s Concert (Vienna), 1st January. The Vienna Philharmonic performs a selection of lively yet profound masterworks from the Strausses and their contemporaries. Broadcast from the Musikverein’s magnificent Golden Hall, this musical New Year’s greeting goes out to more than 90 countries and an estimated 50-million television viewers around the world. www.wienerphilharmoniker.at

Hahnenkamm World Cup Ski Race, Kitzbühel (Tirol), mid-January. It’s no secret that Austria is legendary for skiing, and this is one of the top races on the World Cup ski circuit. www.hahnenkamm.com

Ice World / Eistraum, City Hall (Vienna), starting late January. For several weeks from late January to late March, the plaza in front of Vienna's colorfully illuminated City Hall is transformed into a huge ice rink for everyone to enjoy. www.wienereistraum.com

Mozart Week (Salzburg), late January. Salzburg's most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, gets a full week of stellar classical music events, timed to coincide with his birthday on the 27th January. www.salzburg.info

Carnival / Fasching, Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. On Fasching Tuesday, many people throughout Austria wear colorful costumes as they go about their daily business. Children play dress-up and teenagers or adults go to fancy dress parties. In small communities, there are parades and processions. In Tirol, the processions marking “Fasnacht” (the Shrovetide carnival) are such wild celebrations that these traditional events are only staged every 3, 4 or even 5 years. www.austria.info

Celebrate Indonesian Independence with music

INDONESIAN composer Ananda Sukarlan and Australian Indigenous musician Djakapurra Munyarrun will perform together in Jakarta to celebrate the 72th anniversary of Indonesian Independence.

Taking its name from the Makassar term for Arnhem Land in northern Australia, the Voyage to Marege concert is inspired by the connections between the Yolngu people from North East Arnhem Land and the Bugis traders from Makassar.

The concert is a celebration of the deep bonds between #Australia and #Indonesia. It will be held on 31 August 2017 at Teater Jakarta, Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) Jakarta.

Music tourism hits the high notes for Britain

UK MUSIC has published ‘Wish You Were Here -2016’, a study highlighting the contribution made by #livemusic and music tourism to Britain’s economy in 2015.

The report features both national and regional figures and for the first time reveals the impact of music tourism to twelve UK cities: Norwich, Leicester, Newcastle, Manchester, Belfast, Glasgow, Brighton, Exeter, Cardiff, Coventry, Hull, and London.

The study’s finding included:

  • A total audience of 27.7 million attended live music events in the UK in 2015.

  • 3.7 million attended a #festival in 2015 in the UK, and 24 million attended a concert.
  • Music tourism generated £3.7 billion in direct and indirect spend in the UK last year, up by 7% on the previous year.

Saxony's sound of music

FROM boys' choirs to jazz on paddle steamers via Wagner's Ring cycle and the genius of Bach, Dresden and Leipzig have some of the best ensembles, orchestras, and artists worldwide. The two cities in #Germany's Saxony region are alive with the sound of music.

Dresden Music Festival (May 5-June 5), is an annual favourite. Michael Nyman, English composer of minimalist music and known for his film scores, will start the festival.

Also in May (15 to 22), the International Dixieland Festival will jazz things up with blues, boogie, and swing.

The Kreuzchor Boys' Choir, one of the world's oldest, marks its 800th anniversary with concerts throughout the year. In this anniversary year, there are ten days of concerts starting on April 15.

With the premiere of Richard Wagner's Twilight of the Gods on April 30, Leipzig Opera is going to have the first complete Ring cycle in its repertoire after more than 40 years. From May 5 to May 8, it will then be staged in its entirety on four consecutive days.

This year's Leipzig Bach Festival runs from June 10 to June 19.

Mountain music

A LAKE DISTRICT mountain and what lies within is to provide the inspiration for a live underground performance by a 44-piece orchestra and a unique light display in September.

#HonisterSlateMine, deep inside the mighty Fleetwith Pike, has been chosen by the award-winning #CobwebOrchestra as one of four subterranean venues across the north of England to host a special underground music and light extravaganza featuring their full-piece orchestra.

The 900-year-old mine will host the third in the series of concerts on September 20, when the music will reflect the qualities of this unique #LakeDistrict location. The other three performances are taking place at York Nuclear Bunker, Cleveland Ironstone Museum, and another location yet to be revealed.

Artist Steve Messam – the man behind the Lake District's popular Paper Bridge – has designed site-specific light installations to complement the recitals.

Co-owner of Honister Slate Mine, Joe Weir, says, ‘The acoustics in the mine are outstanding. We've previously had performances from smaller groups and solo musicians down there, but this is the first time we've done anything on this scale. It's a special place with a unique atmosphere, so we're really looking forward to seeing and hearing what this innovative orchestra comes up with.’

The Cobweb Orchestra is a community-based network of music groups throughout northern England.

The maximum audience size at the slate mine concert is 80. Tickets cost £25 and are available by contacting Honister Slate Mine on 017687 77230.
