Mountain music

A LAKE DISTRICT mountain and what lies within is to provide the inspiration for a live underground performance by a 44-piece orchestra and a unique light display in September.

#HonisterSlateMine, deep inside the mighty Fleetwith Pike, has been chosen by the award-winning #CobwebOrchestra as one of four subterranean venues across the north of England to host a special underground music and light extravaganza featuring their full-piece orchestra.

The 900-year-old mine will host the third in the series of concerts on September 20, when the music will reflect the qualities of this unique #LakeDistrict location. The other three performances are taking place at York Nuclear Bunker, Cleveland Ironstone Museum, and another location yet to be revealed.

Artist Steve Messam – the man behind the Lake District's popular Paper Bridge – has designed site-specific light installations to complement the recitals.

Co-owner of Honister Slate Mine, Joe Weir, says, ‘The acoustics in the mine are outstanding. We've previously had performances from smaller groups and solo musicians down there, but this is the first time we've done anything on this scale. It's a special place with a unique atmosphere, so we're really looking forward to seeing and hearing what this innovative orchestra comes up with.’

The Cobweb Orchestra is a community-based network of music groups throughout northern England.

The maximum audience size at the slate mine concert is 80. Tickets cost £25 and are available by contacting Honister Slate Mine on 017687 77230.

When in Provence

Known in Provence as 'blue gold', lavender has long been part of the region’s culture and heritage, used in everything from soap and perfume to herbs and Provencal cooking. The Lavender Parade in Valreas (August 1-3) celebrates this fragrant plant, with cropping, distilling, demonstrations, and markets.

Les Choregies d'Orange, a classical music programme dating back to 1860, is held annually in a Roman amphitheatre in Orange. Running throughout July (to August 4) it attracts up to 10,000 classical music fans each year.

You are always sure to find some kind of wine festival going on. A couple worth noting are the Ban des Vendanges (August 29-30) in Avignon and the Fete de la Veraison (August 1-2) in Chateauneuf du Pape.

The first Roman province outside of Italy, the region was conquered by Rome at the end of 2nd century BC and remained in their hands until the 5th century AD. Much of the town of Arles stands as a reminder of the Roman occupation, which can be relived – in part, anyway – during the Festival Arelate (August 17-23). Expect street entertainments, gladiatorial fights, parades, and film showings in the Roman theatre.

Music tourism’s contribution to the UK economy: £3.1 billion

TOURISTS attending live concerts and music festivals in Britain generated £3.1 billion in direct and indirect spend to the country’s economy, says the UK Music lobby group.

Its Wish You Were Here 2015 economic study reports that music tourism numbers in the UK increased by 34% between 2011 and 2014, with 9.5 million people travelling to music events in 2014.

It says music tourism has been driving wealth into local economies across the whole of the UK.

‘These past four years have seen a 39% rise in overseas tourists travelling to the UK to attend our #musicevents, each with an average spend of £751 going directly to UK businesses,’ the report states. ‘This increase in music tourism provides a huge boost to employment throughout the country, with 38,238 full time jobs in 2014 sustained by music tourism in the UK. This in itself marks a 57 % increase from the 2012 figure of 24,521.’

The government’s Culture Secretary, John Whittingdale, commented: ‘It’s fantastic news that our music industry drew in 9.5 million tourists last year, but it’s no surprise. British music is legendary around the world and continues to go from strength to strength, with UK artists now accounting for one in seven albums sold worldwide.

‘#Festivals such as Glastonbury hold an iconic status on the world music scene and are one of the reasons why international tourism is booming in the UK, drawing in streams of visitors to all parts of the country.’
