Classical Music Extravaganza to be held at Powderham Castle this Summer

WORLD renowned Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is returning to Powderham Castle this summer for a classical music extravaganza with spectacular fireworks.

The Last Night of the BSO Proms is being staged in the wonderful surroundings of the historic castle near Exeter on Sunday, July 30

The programme will consist of many of the traditional Proms pieces performed at the BBC Proms season at the Royal Albert Hall in London – plus a few surprises.

Gates open at 5.30pm, the concert starts at 7.30pm (interval 8.15pm-8.45pm) and the fireworks finale is at 10pm.

£1 ticket offer launches Plymouth-Bristol bus route

BUS company Stagecoach South West has launched Falcon, the first dedicated 24/7 coach service connecting major locations across the region.

Claimed as a cost-effective alternative to the train, the Falcon service will operate 19 journeys a day, seven days a week, between Plymouth, Exeter, Taunton, Bristol Airport, and Bristol city centre, both day and night.

To mark the launch, single and return journeys will initially cost £1 until February 27. From the end of February, normal fares will apply, which include £5 return journeys anywhere along the route for under 25’s and OAP’s and adult returns from £7.50.

Bob Dennison, managing director of Stagecoach South West, said: ‘Falcon is a bold step in making it easier for people to travel across the region. It’s a ’round the clock’ service between the main towns and cities across the South West, plus Bristol Airport.

‘I am confident this 24/7 connection will prove extremely popular with commuters, university students, shoppers, day trippers and, of course, holidaymakers flying from Bristol.’

Tickets, including weekly season tickets, can be bought in cash direct from the driver. A select number of tickets will also be available to pre-book via www.megabus.com.

Norwich to Exeter … in 70 minutes

FLYBE has announced a 70-minute one-hour service between the Exeter and Norwich, the first route to be operated under the UK government’s Regional Air Connectivity Fund.

The route is part of the airline’s 2016 summer schedule, with a choice of six flights a week, operating daily except Saturdays. The service starts on March 24 and runs through the summer until October 28, 2016. Seats are on sale now at www.flybe.com, with one way fares from £17.49 including taxes and charges.

Commenting on the new service, UK Aviation minister Robert Goodwill said: ‘It is fantastic to see Flybe launch this new direct air service between Norwich and Exeter, offering significant journey time savings for passengers when it begins operations in time for Easter. Our smaller airports are vital engines for local economies, connecting the UK and opening up opportunities. That is why the government is backing new regional air routes to drive investment and boost growth across the country.’

Vincent Hodder, Flybe’s Chief Revenue Officer added: ‘Our direct cross-country route will take just 70 minutes, saving customers precious time by offering them the favourable option of not having to endure between five and seven hours in a car or on a train.’

Rugby World Cup worth almost £1 billion in tourist spending

TRAVEL search engine GoEuro.co.uk has calculated that the 2015 #RugbyWorldCup (September 18-October 31) will generate almost £1 billion for the transport and tourism industry. 

The UK will host 20 teams, more than 440,000 international visitors, and 2.2 million Brits in 11 cities. London will be the biggest winner, with 17 matches earning the city more than £197 million in transport, accommodation, merchandise, and food and drink spending.

The calculation excludes the cost of match tickets in the host cities, which are: London, Cardiff, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, Leeds, Leicester, Gloucester, Exeter, Milton Keynes, and Brighton.

Flybe announces winter schedule from Exeter; expands services from Newquay

#FLYBE has announced its 2015-16 winter schedule to and from Exeter. The airline also announced an agreement with Emirates enabling expanded services from Newquay Airport.

The winter schedule for Exeter includes 12 routes with a choice of up to 158 flights a week available for travel between October 25, 2015 and March 26, 2016. The airline has also confirmed the extension of its summer sun routes to Alicante, Faro, and Malaga until November 1, 2015, and the return of popular Saturday ski routes to Chambery and Geneva.

Following a codeshare agreement between Flybe and Emirates, passengers at Newquay Airport will now be able to travel to 145 destinations across six continents in 84 countries on a single ticket.

Al Titterington, managing director, Newquay Cornwall Airport, said: ‘This codeshare agreement between Flybe and Emirates will provide passengers in Cornwall with the freedom to travel anywhere on the Emirates global network at the click of a button, and is another exciting development in the continued growth of Newquay Cornwall Airport.’

Passengers will be able to check their bags at Newquay and not have to collect them until their final destination. Flybe’s current schedule from Newquay will allow passengers to connect to five Emirates services departing daily from airports across the UK including Birmingham, Manchester, and London Gatwick.

Up in the air …

Airlines to switch Gatwick terminals ...

BRITISH AIRWAYS (BA) and easyJet are among the carriers that will switch terminals at Gatwick Airport under a new strategy.

easyJet’s operations will be consolidated in the North Terminal in winter 2016, while all BA flights will move to the South Terminal.

Both will benefit from several changes made to both terminals including new check-in areas and security areas.

easyJet said the move would help its plans to grow operations from Gatwick.

BA’s check-in zone in the South Terminal will be upgraded and a new premium lounge built.

The moves are part of the airport’s strategy to have airlines operate out of single terminals to ease connections and simplify operations.

Exeter passenger numbers up ....

PASSENGERS using Exeter airport rose by almost 30,000 last year due to new domestic flights and continued investment in airport facilities. 

The total number of passengers using the airport rose to 763,000, building on the previous year’s growth which saw numbers rise for the first time in six years.

That many jobs? ....

EUROPE’S airports sustain employment for 12.3 million people earning a total of €365 billion (£271 billion) in income annually, according to a report submitted to the European Parliament.

Lose some, win some

FLYBE has changed its flight schedules from London City following months of operating from the airport. 

The airline is to cut the number of flights between the London airport and Inverness from February 22 due to lower than anticipated passenger numbers, and its services between London and Exeter will be reduced from three to twice a day.

But other routes will be increased due to popular demand. Six flights will operate daily between London and Edinburgh from February while Belfast will be served four times a day.
