On the runway . . .

easyJet, Europe’s leading airline, has today announced that it has reached a key milestone in its ambition to attract 20% of new pilots joining the airline to be women by 2020, having achieved a new high of 15% of new entrants to the airline being female, over the past financial year.

It comes at a time when only 5% of all pilots worldwide are female, according to the International Society of Women Airline Pilots. Of that, just over 450 of them have achieved the rank of captain – which means that almost every female commercial airline captain could fit onto an A380 aircraft.

In October 2015, women only made up 6% of easyJet’s new pilot intake. As a result of the campaign in 2016, easyJet had doubled the intake to 12% and has been increasing ever since towards its ambitious target of 20% by 2020.

Automated self-boarding technology to trial at Gatwick

GATWICK Airport has today announced the UK’s first trial of end-to-end biometrics – where personal data collected at the airport’s self-service bag drops will be recognised by new automated self-boarding gates - simplifying and speeding up the process for passengers and reducing the risk of human error.

The trial is being run in partnership with easyJet - Gatwick’s biggest airline - and the new self-boarding technology will identify each passenger and verify that their passport, face and boarding card all match – a process which takes less than 20 seconds.

The trial will be the first and most extensive of its kind in the UK and will run for at least three months so that around 10,000 passengers take part on the 43 Gatwick routes.

New travel opportunities for pet owners and animal lovers

EASYJET, Europe’s leading airline has teamed up with international house and pet sitting business, TrustedHousesitters, to form a partnership that will make it easier for pet owners and animal lovers to travel - and to explore Europe in a different way.

easyJet customers will be able to choose a free house sitter for their pet or find free accommodation as a house and pet sitter when booking flights on easyJet.com. The service is due to launch early in 2018.

The move follows a survey of easyJet customers that revealed how the majority of pet owners would travel more if they had better access to pet care.

Of the customers surveyed, 58%** said they would travel more often if they had more satisfactory pet care solutions. Among those who found that owning pets made travelling more difficult, 62%** said that either the cost of pet care or concern for pet welfare prevented them from going away more often.

easyJet will enable pet owners to match with verified members of the TrustedHousesitters online community to look after their homes, while animal lovers will be able to explore Europe, looking after pets in unique accommodation, when booking on www.easyJet.com.

Report reveals most complained about UK airlines; Ryanair, easyJet and BA all feature

FLIGHT COMPENSATION company EUclaim has published internal data showing what it claims are the most complained about British airlines for the first half of 2016.

The data reveals that the number of people seeking compensation against budget airline Ryanair has more than doubled in the last year. During the period January – June 2015, 1,879 Ryanair passengers sought advice from EUclaim, but in the same period this year, that number more than doubled, with 4,781 passengers getting in touch with the company to seek recompense for their delayed or cancelled flight.

easyJet has seen the number of cases through EUclaim increase every year for the last three years. The airline also has the dubious honour of topping the EUclaim ‘Carriers of Shame’ list for the first half of 2016, with 5,641 claims being processed against them by the flight compensation company, while the company’s data shows that the number of claims against British Airways has increased year-on-year. Monarch’s services appear to have improved so much that it has fallen out of the 2016 top ‘Carriers of Shame’ list.

Top 5: Carriers of Shame (2016 H1 Results)

  • easyJet 5,641 complaints
  • Ryanair 4,781
  • Thomas Cook 3,807
  • British Airways 3,423
  • Thomson 2,422

EUclaim has estimated that in 2016 airlines could owe a total of £588.44 million in compensation due to delays of more than three hours and cancellations.

The company exposes Norwich Airport as the most likely airport in the country for passengers to suffer a flight delay or cancellation. In 2015 EUclaim processed 67 claims against airlines departing or arriving at the regional minnow, but in 2016 that number shot up to 175, a 161% increase on claim enquiries.

Brexit will have 'no material impact' – easyJet

HAVING joined the chorus of doom warning of, er, doom during the EU referendum, easyJet has expressed confidence that the UK’s Brexit vote will not have a ‘material impact’ on its low-cost strategy.

The airline says it had been preparing for this eventuality in the lead up to the referendum vote and has been working on a number of options that will allow it to continue flying in all of its markets.

easyJet’s initial focus will be to accelerate discussions with UK and EU governments and regulators to ensure that the UK remains part of the single EU aviation market. It would ensure that consumers continue to benefit from low-fares and would mean easyJet and other airlines can continue to operate as they do now.

However, easyJet admitted that it will also continue to develop ‘alternative options’ that will fully maintain its existing network and operations.

A statement said: ‘easyJet is confident that its unique network, digital leadership, cost advantage, and financial strength will enable it to continue to execute on its strategy and to deliver long term sustainable earnings growth and returns to shareholders.’

Says chief executive Carolyn McCall: ‘We remain confident in the strength of easyJet’s business model and our ability to continue to deliver our successful strategy and our leading returns. We have today written to the UK government and the European Commission to ask them to prioritize the UK remaining part of the single EU aviation market, given its importance to trade and consumers.’

Meanwhile, BMI Regional has warned that it might quit its UK base because of the uncertainty and complexity thrown up by the referendum vote to leave the European Union.

Peter Simpson, chief executive of the regional carrier, said: ‘The vote has created, first and foremost, a lot of uncertainty about the future of the UK, the EU, and Europe as a whole. For a business such as BMI Regional, being heavily influenced by the freedom of trade and traffic, this uncertainty will undoubtedly add a layer of complexity to our business. BMI Regional will keenly monitor developments over the coming weeks and months to assess the challenges and opportunities they will create for the business. It is, however, safe to say, that our continued business domicile as a UK entity is less than clear at this point in time.’

easyJet introduces 30-minute rule

EASYJET is warning passengers that they must turn up for flights from Gatwick at least 30 minutes before departure or they will be turned away.

The airline has introduced the measure to try to improve punctuality at the airport, which is among the worst for delays.

Passengers are being told that if they're not at the gate at least 30 minutes before the flight departs, they won't be allowed to board. They will have to abandon their journey or pay a £80 fee to re-book on a later flight.

They will be warned of the change by a note on their boarding pass, saying: ‘Gatwick security control gates are automatically being timed to close 30 minutes before departure.’

Those whose boarding passes are scanned later than 30 minutes before departure will be sent back to the desk to re-book.

easyJet sells 'missed departure cover' for £7.50 per passenger
