Taking to the Skies

RESEARCH by YouGov for one of the UK’s busiest regional airports shows a clear generational divide in attitudes to travel, with millennials much more likely to travel outside the UK than they were two years ago.

More than a third (37%) of 18-24 year-olds and 28% of 25-34 year-olds surveyed for Bristol Airport say they are more likely to fly now than they were two years ago. This is compared to just 17% of those 55 and over.

While changes in personal finances appear to be the biggest factor for those reducing their travel (34%), Brexit is cited as another reason for reducing their travel by 14% of 18-24 year-olds when compared to just 5% of 55 and overs.

Bristol Airport Reports Busiest Year

MORE than 8.1 million passengers used Bristol Airport last year, surpassing the total for 2016 by over six hundred thousand passengers. This represents an 8 per cent increase year on year, and the eighth consecutive year of growth for England’s third largest regional airport.

Both charter and scheduled airline sectors contributed to the rise with the number of direct routes served reaching over 125. Highlights in 2017 included TUI’s long haul programme operating the 787 Dreamliner aircraft from the Airport for the first time.
easyJet added two new destinations to its route network to Stockholm and Athens, and Ryanair started a new service to Cologne.

UK Airports: Regional airports have highest levels of satisfaction

AS millions of Brits gear up for their big summer holiday, Cheapflights, has once again asked them to share how they score the UK’s airports across more than a dozen categories including shopping, cleanliness, Wi-Fi access, bar and restaurant facilities, check-in and security - even the loos come under scrutiny!

In the second of its annual poll, Cheapflights asked frequent air travellers from across the UK to review London City, Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton and Stansted, Belfast International, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow International, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle airports.

Newcastle emerged as the overall winner, achieving the highest levels of satisfaction across all categories, followed closely by London City, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Bristol. London’s airports, with the exception of London City, continue to lag behind, with Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted and Luton all trailing their regional cousins.

Up in the air . . .

Research from global flight search and travel deals website, Cheapflights.co.uk, has revealed that the UK’s regional airports are giving London a run for its money when it comes to price, popularity and pick of destinations. Cheapflights’ analysis of 20 million searches and more than 200 different routes reveals that it doesn’t always pay to fly from the Capital.

Heathrow tables plan to cut domestic passenger charges

HEATHROW has pledged to cut domestic passenger charges by a third as it bids to boost regional connections. The charge for airlines flying from Heathrow would be reduced from £29.59 to £19.59 from January next year, under new proposals announced by the airport’s management.

The discount would be supported by increasing the total share of airport landing charges recovered through noise and emissions, adding further incentives for airlines to operate the quietest and cleanest aircraft from Heathrow, the airport said.

Environmental charges would go up from 21% to 28% of total airport charges under the plans.

The suggested changes are aimed at addressing a fall in domestic connections to Heathrow from 18 routes in 1990 to seven now.

This follows a report by the airport-backed National Connectivity Taskforce which identified the need to make routes to regional airports more attractive to airlines.
