Microadventures in Turkey

MICROADVENTURES are becoming increasingly popular for time-crunched travellers looking for their next adrenalin fix. With many European adventure destinations becoming overcrowded and overdone, intrepid travellers are now looking for advice on where to escape the crowds, get active and embrace the outdoors in the new year.

Located on the refreshingly remote southwestern coast of #Turkey, Sarigerme’s enviable location between the stretching turquoise sea and spectacular mountains makes it the ultimate, crowd-free outdoor playground. This land of adventure is just a mere four-hour flight from the UK.

White water rafting… Stretching 229 kilometres and offering a number of different routes, the nearby Dalaman River promises wet and wild fun for rafters of all abilities. Besides being a white water hotspot, there are also many secluded spots along the riverbank where travellers can stop and take in the impressive waterfalls, caverns, craggy mountain ridges and colourful forests.

Sea kayaking… The Lycian shore is one of the most irresistible in the entire Mediterranean. Kayakers can explore a heavenly labyrinth of secluded coves, remote peninsulas, hidden islets, and rugged cliffs, and if they are lucky, bump into endangered Loggerhead turtles, known as Caretta Caretta, that come to the Sarigerme shores every year to nest. Swoon-worthy Göcek Bay’s beautiful beaches and idyllic islands are just a short paddle away.

Catch the wind… Unlike other beach destinations along the Turquoise Coast, Sarigerme’s unique position between the Aegean and Mediterranean seas welcomes a cool sea breeze that creates the ideal waves for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Visitors can sign up to lessons and courses and learn how to discover the sea in style.

Scuba diving… For those searching for their next aquatic adventure, Sarigerme boasts fantastic diving conditions with warm temperatures ranging from 20-30°C and clear visibility for 20-40 metres. Divers can explore ancient shipwrecks and ruins, colourful reefs and hidden caves. This part of the Mediterranean Sea also offers visitors the chance to see diverse underwater creatures including turtles, barracudas, rays and groupers.

Paragliding… Down the coast from Sarigerme, Ölüdeniz is one of the best spots in Europe for solo and tandem paragliders. For the ultimate flight, adrenaline junkies make the brave leap off Babadağ Mountain from where they will enjoy breath-taking views of the big blue from above.

Horse riding… With a number of equestrian clubs and ranches in the area, Sarigerme is a top choice for a horse riding holiday. With professional and friendly instruction, travellers can grab the reigns of beautiful Turkish horses and trot through fields of fragrant flowers, climb into the surrounding mountains and breathe in the fresh forest air.

Caving, rock climbing abseiling… With over 40,000 caves and caverns, Sarigerme is a paradise for potholing and caving, offering adventurers the chance to see crumbling hidden churches, secret underground lakes, cisterns, stalactites and stalagmites. The cave network is not for the faint hearted, particularly because cavers will often be sharing the dark corners with friendly families of bats. For those who prefer to explore in the light, travellers are welcomes to try rock-climbing and abseiling in Sarigerme’s rocky mountain surrounds.

Hiking… A trip down the coast leads to Saklikent, which means ‘hidden city’ in Turkish. Here, travellers will find a secret paradise which spans 18 kilometres in length and 300 meters in depth, making Saklikent Gorge one of the deepest canyons in the world. The gorge is so steep and so narrow that sunlight often cannot reach it. In order to reach Saklikent Gorge, the Xanthos River has to be crossed which is guaranteed to get heart beats pumping. For those looking for an easier alternative, there are also wooden boardwalks positioned above the river leading to a picturesque riverside restaurant.

Driving towards another record year for Golf in the Algarve

WITH a staggering 43 nine or 18-hole layouts that can be played all-year-round, it’s no wonder the #Algarve draws hundreds of thousands of golfers to its fairways each year.  The Algarve is the southernmost region of mainland Portugal, and more than half of its courses decorate the 150-mile coastline, which also boasts spectacular beaches, picturesque rocky coves, quaint fishing villages and a rich cultural heritage.

The Algarve continues to exceed #golf visitor records after a flying start to 2017, while it has also retained its place as the best value #holiday destination for UK tourists.

The region is widely-regarded as Europe’s number one golf destination with 43 fabulous courses and hit an all-time high for golf visitors numbers in 2016 with almost 1.3m rounds throughout the year – an increase of more than 10 per cent on its previous record in 2015.

But the surge has continued into 2017 and the sights are now set on another new record after nearly 328,000 rounds were played in the first quarter of the year – another six per cent rise on last year’s figures.

Aside from the quality of the golf courses, the hospitality and the fabulous climate, golfers also know they can expect exceptional value for money as, according to the recent Post Office Holiday Costs Barometer, the Algarve is the best value holiday destination throughout the eurozone once again for 2017.

The Algarve was one of 14 beach resorts in the eurozone surveyed by the Post Office for price checks on meals, drinks and other holiday essentials, coming out on top of the pile for British holidaymakers on a budget.

Visitors know that prices for meals and drinks – one of the biggest costs for tourists – do not come any cheaper than along the stunning Algarve coastline, which can make a huge difference to holiday costs.

Maria Manuel Delgado e Silva, ATA golf product manager, said: “Last year was a hugely successful year for everyone associated with our golf tourism industry but it’s fantastic to see this continue into 2017.

On the rails . . .

EUROTUNNEL welcomed the 25 millionth truck to use its Le Shuttle Freight service on the 17th March since the service began on 25 July 1994.

This 25 millionth truck, from the fleet operated by UPS, the express courier specialist, was carrying packages from Germany, many containing items such as clothing, shoes or electronics purchased the previous day via the Internet.

The rapid growth in e-commerce, between 20-30% per annum, shows how essential the Channel Tunnel has become in the transport and logistics infrastructure linking the United Kingdom to continental Europe. Approximately one million e-commerce packages transit via the Channel Tunnel every day.

Delays at Dover cause holiday misery

BRITISH holidaymakers heading to France via Dover are being warned to allow extra time –a great deal of extra time – for their journey to the port amid long delays caused by heightened security checks.

There have been major tailbacks on the M20/A20 since Friday with some motorists complaining of being in queues for up to 14 hours.

The delays, at the start of the school holidays, are being worsened by tighter security checks by French border police at Dover and Eurotunnel following recent terror attacks in France.

Tourists are being advised to try to avoid the M20/A20 and use the M2/A2 where possible.

On Sunday morning, the Port of Dover was warning of waiting times of three to 3.5 hours from Roundhill Tunnels.

Dover MP Charlie Elphicke said it was a 'very serious situation' with families 'suffering out there in massive tailbacks'. Other MPs said the tougher security checks introduced by the French were understandable and necessary, but that more police were needed to make them.

They counted them out … and in

Brits making more visits abroad

BRITS made 65.7 million visits abroad in 2015, up 9.4% on 2014, according to figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). They also spent more – a total of £3.5 billion, up by 9.8% up on the previous year without adjusting for inflation.

The number of nights spent abroad also increased, by 10.7% to 682.4 million nights.

Spain continued to be the most popular overseas destination for UK residents, accounting for 13 million visits, a 6.1% rise and almost 20% of the total number of visits abroad.

Giles Horsfield, head researcher for the ONS International Passenger Survey, said: ‘Visits abroad by UK residents have continued to rise, but have not quite returned to pre-downturn levels.’

In-bound tourism figures were also positive. The number of visits by overseas residents rose by 5.1% to 36.1 million. This was the fifth consecutive year of growth and the highest number of visits since the International Passenger Survey began in 1961. Growth was particular strong from European Union states, with 5.27 million visits, up by 7% on the first three months of 2015 and setting a record first quarter.
Visits from North America were also up 7% compared to the same period last year.

Holidays remain the main reason for visits to the UK, accounting for 13.9 million visits, a rise of 2.1%. Business visits and visits to friends and family both showed growths of 7.1%.

A record 18.6 million overnight visits to London were made by overseas residents in 2015, an increase of 6.8% from 2014. Overnight visits to the rest of England grew by 6.9% to 15.2 million.

Visits to Wales rose by 4% in 2015, while those to Scotland fell by 4%.

Stick with the EU, say Britain’s travel agents

THE ‘Stay’ side in the UK’s referendum on European Union membership has been backed by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), which has published a report on what it says are the potential impacts on country’s travel industry of withdrawal from the EU.

With economic analysis from Deloitte, ‘What #Brexit might mean for UK #Travel‘ assesses how the existing relationship between the UK and the EU has affected British travellers and the travel industry, and looks at what the likely impact would be of a ‘Leave’ vote on consumer confidence, expectation and behaviour, as well as on the industry.

More than 29 million foreign holidays each year – 76% of the total – are made by UK holidaymakers to EU countries. Sixty-eight percent (4.6 million) of all business trips from Britain are to EU states.

There are currently, says ABTA, many EU regulations designed to benefit holidaymakers and business travellers. Although these regulations would not change immediately, a UK exit could have a “significant impact” in the future. Current regulations include:

  • Financial protection for package holidays
  • Compensation for flight delays
  • Access to free health cover through the European Health Insurance Card
  • Caps on mobile phone charges
  • ‘Open skies’ across the EU, resulting in more routes, more airlines, and lower fares

Of immediate concern is the impact that a period of prolonged uncertainty will have on the strength of sterling versus other currencies. A weaker pound has a direct impact on spending power overseas, making the cost of holidaying or visiting abroad more expensive, as well as adding costs for UK businesses to buy abroad.

Mark Tanzer, ABTA CEO, says: ‘Our assessment of the report’s findings is that a vote to leave will lead to uncertainties and may lead to increased costs for travel businesses and the travelling public. We recognize that people will approach this referendum by considering many factors – personal, professional, and economic – before casting their vote. ABTA has considered what a vote to leave the EU might mean purely from a travel perspective. Our view is that the potential risks and downsides are not matched by an equal upside for the traveller.’

Go Holiday editor David Kernek comments: That’s ABTA’s view, and it’s hardly surprising. The key words in ABTA’s plea for the status quo are could and might and potential. Neither they nor the Get Out folks can be sure of what will follow a UK vote to leave the club that, to quote London’s mayor, nobody in their right mind - except, perhaps the Turkish government – would want to join now. The one thing that is reasonably certain, however, is that our European neighbours – from Belgium and France across to Italy and Greece – will want to do nothing that would prevent British holidaymakers contributing to the growth of their tourist industries.

Book early for 2016 summer holidays, Brits urged

HOLIDAYMAKERS have been advised by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) to book their summer holidays early after figures show a 6% year-on-year increase in bookings for overseas summer holidays, with substantial increases for Spain (27%) and Portugal (32%), and with Cyprus (14%) and Malta (15%) also selling well.

Bookings to Greece are at similar levels to 2015, as are those to the US. Similar booking patterns are being reported by travel trade associations in the Netherlands and Scandinavia, which will result in increased demand and competition for accommodation.

The growth in popularity of the Western Mediterranean is being driven partly by a drop in business to traditionally popular destinations such as Tunisia and Egypt, following terrorist murders and changes to Foreign Office travel advice.

More customers also appear to be looking for the wider choice and good value on offer to early bookers. Mediterranean Eurozone countries have responded to local economic problems by lowering prices in bars and restaurants and the pound is still at a relatively high level, meaning that these destinations offer good value for money.

Another factor behind this growth is the continuing re-adjustment in the overseas holiday market following the significant falls seen in 2008 and 2009 after the financial crisis and credit crunch, when overall UK passenger numbers fell by 15%. In 2015, UK airlines reported that passenger numbers had returned to pre-credit crunch levels.

Mark Tanzer, ABTA chief executive said: ‘The significant increase in summer holiday bookings to Western Mediterranean destinations is also being mirrored in other Northern European markets, so it makes it more important than ever that customers book early to obtain the best value and ensure they get the holiday of their choice.’
