Hungary for Italy

BUDAPEST Airport’s blistering route network growth looks set to continue into 2019 as the Hungarian gateway announces a further two new routes with Ryanair. Leading the way the ultra-low-cost carrier will launch new links to Bari and Cagliari, both with a twice-weekly service set to commence in April 2019.

While the Ryanair will join Wizz Air in offering direct services to Bari, the port city on the Adriatic Sea, the airline’s link to Cagliari will become Budapest’s first connection to the capital city of the Italian island, #Sardinia. Ryanair’s continued growth at Budapest will see the airline serve eight Italian destinations as of next year as the new services join established links to Naples, Milan Bergamo, Palermo, Pisa, Rome Ciampino and Treviso.

ICELANDAIR will take its Glasgow to Reykjavik service daily on September 7. Currently it runs six flights a week between the cities.

Up in the air …

DELTA AIR LINES and VIRGIN ATLANTIC Airways have expanded their transatlantic partnership, with the introduction of schedules that offer six new daily services. The airlines begin their summer schedule, providing up to 39 return transatlantic flights a day between the UK and 15 destinations across North America. The joint schedule includes ten daily flights on the world’s largest business travel market, between London Heathrow and New York, now with eight daily departures to New York-JFK and two departures to Newark.

FLYBE’s 2015 summer schedule from its newly re-opened base at Aberdeen, offers up to 75 flights a week on five key routes. Flybe’s routes from Aberdeen include a daily service to Belfast, the first summer of operation for Flybe’s three times a day service to London City, and multi-frequency flights to Birmingham and Manchester.

Consumer rights violation lands three airlines in trouble

AT least three airlines are facing legal action over passenger handling complaints after being hit by flight disruptions.

The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said Ireland’s Aer Lingus, Britain’s Jet2 and Hungary’s Wizz Air have failed to change their consumer policies in line with its requests.

Andrew Haines, chief executive of the CAA, said passengers had ‘every right to be disappointed’ by the airlines.

The move follows a six-month review of passenger disruption policies. It examined how airlines handle compensation for flight delays and offer information to passengers about their rights. The CAA said it has launched enforcement action against the three airlines and will seek a court order unless they comply.

The allegations are:

- Jet2 and Wizz Air have failed to satisfy the regulator that they are consistently paying compensation for disruption caused by technical faults, despite a Court of Appeal ruling clarifying that airlines must do so.

- Aer Lingus and Jet2 have failed to give satisfactory evidence that they pro-actively provide passengers with information about their rights in line with the requirements set out in European regulation.

- Jet2 and Wizz Air are imposing two-year time limits for passengers to take compensation claims to the court, despite a Court of Appeal ruling that passengers should have up to six years to take a claim to court.
