Hungary for Italy

BUDAPEST Airport’s blistering route network growth looks set to continue into 2019 as the Hungarian gateway announces a further two new routes with Ryanair. Leading the way the ultra-low-cost carrier will launch new links to Bari and Cagliari, both with a twice-weekly service set to commence in April 2019.

While the Ryanair will join Wizz Air in offering direct services to Bari, the port city on the Adriatic Sea, the airline’s link to Cagliari will become Budapest’s first connection to the capital city of the Italian island, #Sardinia. Ryanair’s continued growth at Budapest will see the airline serve eight Italian destinations as of next year as the new services join established links to Naples, Milan Bergamo, Palermo, Pisa, Rome Ciampino and Treviso.

New bucket lists for senior women travellers

RECENT research indicates that women over 50 have new expectations about destinations. See Sardinia by train

A LITTLE-KNOWN fact about #Sardinia is that it has 450 miles of standard and narrow gauge railway … and a vintage steam train.

The Railway Touring Company has been offering its 'Sardinia and the Emerald Coast' tour for 15 years, and has refined the route to take in all of the highlights in a nine-day journey around the mountainous Italian island.

The company's tour travels by narrow gauge train along the coastal route from Bosa to Tresnuraghes, and by special vintage train, from Palau Marina Station climbing into the hills, through forests and along deep valleys to Tempio Pausania, to descend once more, crossing bridges and viaducts and winding through villages to pause at Nulvi for a local feast.

On the final day of the Sardinian odyssey a steam-hauled chartered narrow gauge train of restored wooden-bodied vintage carriages will take holidaymakers north along the scenic Sorgono branch, a line no longer open to regular traffic, and which was rescued from closure in 2015.

'Sardinia and the Emerald Coast' costs £2,155, including flights between London and Cagliari, all rail and coach transport, transfers, hotels, lunches, dinners, and the services of a tour manager.

The company offers a range of heritage rail-based tours in Britain, Europe, Sri Lanka, Canada, the Andes, Peru, and India.

easyJet confirms record profit

EASYJET has issued a positive long-term forecast after confirming a record annual profit of £686 million. 

Passenger numbers rose by 6% to 68.6 million in the year to September 30 as people took more holidays and city breaks, and the airline attracted increased numbers of business travellers.

The airline's pre-tax profit was up by £105 million or 18.1% year-on-year as revenue rose by 3.5% to £4.6 billion.

Carolyn McCall, the company’s chief executive, said: ‘Our outlook for the longer term is positive. We expect demand in our markets to be sustained and for easyJet to continue to be a winner in its markets.’

New routes - The company is to run three new routes – Paris, Milan Malpensa, and Olbia in Sardinia – next summer for business and leisure passengers travelling from Manchester Airport.

Across the new routes, the airline is expected to fly 5,000 passengers a week from the airport throughout next summer, operating nine times a week to Paris, up to seven times a week to Milan Malpensa, and twice a week to Olbia, Sardinia.

PARISIAN company Le Collectionist has launched in the UK, providing British holidaymakers with access to a curated selection of private properties in sought-after destinations across the globe. 

The company says it bridges the gap between a #five-star #hotel stay and a home rental break, offering tailor-made #villa get-aways with hotel-like services. Destinations include the French Riviera and Provence, Sardinia and Sicily, Andalucia and Ibiza, Zermatt and Verbier, plus Brazil, Argentina, Indonesia, Thailand, the Maldives and the Caribbean.

TOP RATES: The world's most expensive hotel is in Utah, according to a survey by Luxury-Hotels.com. An average overnight stay at the The Amangiri Hotel in Canyon Point will cost guests $1,889 (£1,235) for the least expensive double room this summer. 

Taking the number two spot on the survey is the Hotel Cala di Volpe, Sardinia, where the average nightly rate is $1,789 (£1,168).
