Travel firm TUI sees growth as Cyprus & Canary Isles replace Egypt

TRAVEL group TUI says it is confident of increasing earnings by more than 10 percent this year, as holidays to the Canary Islands and Cyprus replace security-threatened destinations such as Egypt and Tunisia.

TUI’s joint chief executive Peter Long said the company’s growth forecast for the current financial year took into account the costs of disruption in Egypt. ‘We have the ability to absorb this and still be comfortable with the guidance of at least 10 percent growth in earnings,’

Customers were choosing to go to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Cyprus, the Caribbean, and Mexico, Long said, instead of Tunisia and Egypt.

Book ahead for the slopes

IF it’s summertime, it’s time – for some folks – to think about a #skiing holiday, so Inghams has launched its 2015/6 ski brochure, with a programme that has been expanded with new resorts in Austria and Italy.

Says Hugh Walton at Inghams: ‘We've a lot to shout about with the launch of our 15/16 ski brochure. No less than six new resorts, a new ski-in/ski-out Chalet Hotel in Champoluc, and new chalets in Mayrhofen and Avoriaz. We've more UK departure airports than ever before and a huge range of ski pack and lifts pass offers to tempt early bookers.’
Inghams also has holidays – in northern Norway – for non-skiers.

CANADIAN budget carrier WestJet is to start low fare transatlantic flights from Gatwick. Details of the Canadian destinations to be served and frequency will be provided later in the summer, but flights are planned to start in spring 2016.

WestJet already operates from Dublin and started flying from Glasgow to Halifax, Nova Scotia last month for £238.

Try a stay in the slammer

FANCY a holiday in a prison?

Head to Freemantle,#Australia, where the city’s 19th century jail has been re-opened as a 200-bed hostel by YHA Australia.

Guests can sleep in the original cells or in prison warders’ cottages. There is a mix of dormitory accommodation and private rooms.

This #one-of-a-kind hostel that has the original fabric of the prison (including walls, floors, and cells) and its history is interpreted and displayed throughout the building.

The site dates back to 1829, when the area – dubbed the Swan River Colony – was designated for free settlers. But the settlement's fledgling agricultural industry floundered. With the colony's future looking bleak, convict labour was introduced and the prison was built.

Turkey set for golf boom?

GOLF resort developments in Turkey have the second strongest mid- to long-term growth potential of all countries in the European Mediterranean region, according to the accountancy firm, KPMG.

While Spain, Portugal, Italy, and France have higher levels of supply, Turkey has led the way within emerging markets and now accounts for seven per cent of the pan-regional supply, with the fifth highest number of coastal integrated golf resorts in the region.

‘The vast majority of the golf resorts in Turkey feature hotels only,’ says Julian Walker at Spot Blue International Property. ‘Most privately-owned golf property is not actually on the fairway but in residential developments near to one or more golf courses. But, as the KPMG report states, Turkey is capitalizing on strong tourism demand, aided by competitive pricing, so further growth and new resort projects can be expected in the future. This will reinforce the diversity of the Turkish real estate market.’

The KPMG report said that across the European Mediterranean region, golf resorts that offer accommodation in rented villas or apartments, often alongside a hotel, now account for more than 15 per cent of the market and continue to grow in numbers.

In an attempt to grow its share of global golf tourism, Turkey’s Western Mediterranean Development Agency and Turkish Airlines this year launched a scheme to attract more French golfers to the Antalya region, home to the country’s golfing hub, Belek. It is hoped that many of the million-plus golfers in France, some of whom travel to Morocco and Tunisia to play, will consider Turkey as a new destination.

‘The knock-on effect of more golfers, whichever nationality, is a good thing for the local property market,’ said Mr Walker. ‘Belek’s reputation as an international golf hub is snowballing, and more visitors mean more demand for accommodation, which increases demand for lettable property.’
