Swift Air, the largest, independent charter airline in the United States, made a substantial contribution this week to ongoing hurricane recovery needs in Puerto Rico. Swift Air transported 30,000 pounds of medical supplies from Miami to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where it is being distributed to hospitals and medical facilities throughout the island.
The project was coordinated with Aspen-based philanthropist Jan Soderberg, former President Bill Clinton and the Clinton Foundation's Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Action Network on Post-Disaster Recovery, which is hosting a meeting in San Juan this week.

Air Portugal flies backwards . . .
TAP Air Portugal, the 72 year-old Portuguese national carrier, on Friday, flew passengers from Lisbon to Newark via the 70s! The A330 aircraft had been painted in the livery design the airline used from the mid 1950s to mid 70s.
The “retro flight” might have felt like taking a trip back through the 70s for passengers. The cabin crew wore the airline’s most emblematic uniforms, designed by French stylist Louis FĂ©raud. And even the interior of the cabin, the headrests, meals and even the in-flight entertainment have all been remade, in 70s style.

BA cabin crew to strike for 48 hours
UNITE cabin crew members working for British Airways ‘mixed fleet’ announced a 48-hour strike starting Tuesday 10 January, after the airline refused to extend the mandate of the strike vote to allow for talks to resolve an ongoing dispute over ‘poverty pay’ to continue.
Warning British Airways of needlessly seeking conflict, Unite said its members were legally required to take industrial action within 28 days of voting for it, unless the airline agreed to an extension.
A two day stoppage scheduled for Christmas day and Boxing day was suspended to allow Unite members to vote on the offer.

News from Wild Horizons
#ZIMBABWE continues to experience a shortage of US Dollars cash.
There are cash withdrawal restrictions in place at ATM’s and these vary between $300 and $100 per card per day. Travellers are encouraged to bring small denomination US$ bills with them for payments where credit cards are not accepted, such as some smaller shops and restaurants, as well as the craft markets.
Note that Euros, Pounds and ZAR are also accepted in cash but exchange rates may not be favourable so US Dollar cash is recommended.

Gatwick Airport top with recycling
#GATWICK, in partnership with DHL, is set to become the first airport in the World able to dispose of Category 1* waste on site – an issue that costs the global aviation sector around £500 million a year – and convert it into energy.
From November Gatwick’s new £3.8million processing plant will not only dispose of the waste safely on site, it will also convert it - and all other organic waste - into energy to power the new plant and heat the North Terminal, enabling the Airport to hit an 85% recycling rate – the best of any UK airport.
*Category 1 forms the majority of waste from non-EU flights and is defined as food waste or anything mixed with it – such as packaging, cups, meal trays - from international transport vehicles.

Stay indoors, Brits in Turkey urged
BRITONS in #Turkey should remain indoors, even though the situation now ‘appears quieter’ in Istanbul, the UK’s Foreign Office says in its latest advice to travellers following the attempted #militarycoup.
‘We've been monitoring the situation in Turkey very closely and remain very concerned about what's been going on there,’ said Britain’s Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson. ‘I have spoken to our diplomatic staff in Ankara and in Istanbul. They are doing a fantastic job. They are working very hard to do the best for the many Brits who are there and the many people on holiday, who should follow our travel advice.’
That travel advice reads: ‘We strongly advise you to stay indoors, avoid public places, in particular demonstrations, and remain vigilant. If you are at an airport in Turkey, please follow the advice of the authorities and contact your airline or tour operator.
If you are due to travel to or from Turkey over the next few days, you should closely monitor our travel advice and check with your airline or tour operator before travelling.’
British Airways said it was cancelling all flights to and from Turkey on Saturday, but easyJet plans to run its scheduled flights, largely to Turkish resort towns.

Police plan summer crackdown on Gatwick drunks
POLICE patrols at #Gatwick Airport in the UK will be stepped up from next month to clamp down on drunken and rowdy behavior.
It's the second successive year that the Sussex Police force has ordered extra patrols as part of Operation Disrupt, a campaign that specifically targets ‘problematic’ groups and individual travellers during the summer.
Sergeant Darren Taylor of the Gatwick Airport Policing Team, said: ‘We deal with disruptive passengers all year round, but we recognize the problem tends to peak in the summer months – often when there are a lot of stag and hen parties – and that's why we run a specific operation at this time of year.
‘Working with the airlines, we're able to target a number of long and short haul routes where we feel there may be issues. We'll also be increasing patrols around the airside and around licensed premises to ensure people are aware of the rules and their responsibilities. The whole concept is about early engagement, to prevent disorder from occurring, and to allow the majority of well-behaved passengers to enjoy their flight. The bottom line is if people are drunk and disorderly, they will be refused carriage. It's as simple as that.’
People convicted of being drunk on board an aircraft face a maximum sentence of up to two years' imprisonment. In March last year, the limits on fines imposed by magistrates for this offence were removed, meaning offenders could also face a heavy financial penalty. Offenders are also liable to pay the costs incurred by an airline in the event of a delayed or cancelled flight, said the police.
A total of 208 flights were covered as part of the operation last summer. Of these, 118 incidents of disruption were reported, while officers also responded to further reports of problematic passengers on other routes. Of those, 80 passengers were refused carriage due to their behaviour and a further 81 were given words of ‘advice’.
In addition, 26 passengers were arrested for offences including being drunk and disorderly, threats to kill, assault, public order, interfering with cabin crew, and being drunk on board an aircraft.
Sgt. Taylor added: ‘We'll be keeping an eye on people from the point they check in to the point they board an aircraft. It's about getting in there early so people are aware of the rules, and if they continue to break them, they will be dealt with robustly.
Gatwick is an extremely family-oriented airport and we pride ourselves on being very passenger-friendly. It's a great place to travel to and from, but there are a minority of people who will ruin the experience for others."
Operation Disrupt runs from June 1 to September 30.
