Mashatu: 5 days in 5 different ways

MASHATU is a private wildlife sanctuary ideally located in northern Tuli at the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo rivers where eastern #Botswana meets South Africa. It’s not called “Land of Giants” for nothing – it is home to the largest population of elephants (1000+) on private land on the continent as well as prolific wildlife and bird species including lion, leopard, zebra, giraffe, wild dog as well as many plains antelope. What sets Mashatu apart though is its sheer “Wow factor” - the vast open spaces, the incredible vistas, breath-taking night skies - and the ability to set out and explore this remote slice of #Africa in five different ways that are sure to get the adrenaline pumping.

1. Walk with Giants Half day walking trails not only promise ticking off some of the big game – but the focus is on the little, often overlooked aspects of the bush – tracks, plants, insects, etc. A more intimate bush experience that will awaken your senses and allow you to become a part of the environment – not merely a spectator on a vehicle.

2. Pedal power Mountain bike safaris allow adventurous guests to see the bush from a different perspective. Experienced rangers provide all equipment and accompany cyclists as they pedal their way along ancient elephant paths. Rides are tailored to suit the fitness and strength of the riders in the early mornings and late afternoons.

3. Ride on the wild side Experienced riders can join Limpopo Horse Safaris for a morning or afternoon ride into the wilderness. The terrain is ideal for exhilarating horse riding with natural ditches and logs to jump. Spot elephants and cats as well as antelopes, wild dogs, jackals, bat eared foxes, giraffe - and on occasion, canter with zebras and wildebeest across the plains. You can even ‘camp wild’ on a 7-day ride out on Mashatu.

4. Traditional game drives Guided game drives with specialised rangers and trackers – mostly local Batswanas who have been living and guiding on Mashatu for over 13 years. Expect to see excellent daily sightings of the “Big 5 of Predators” (namely lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and jackal).

5. Clickety click The combination of spectacular lighting, the quality of game viewing and guidance of the resident wildlife photographer means that Mashatu is a real “hot spot” for photographers. So much so, that a photograph called "Essence of Elephants", taken at Mashatu’s unique sunken Matabole Hide won Greg du Toit the BBC Worldwide "Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2013" title. Matabole is currently being upgraded to be even better when it reopens in March 2018. If that isn’t reason enough to get you reaching for your big lens – Mashatu’s newest hide, Elephant Valley Hide offers an alternative experience for up to 4 photographers in a contrasting section of the reserve which is more arid - so an important water source for wildlife in those drier areas.

Eggsplore Africa

IF you’re planning a #family #safari without the crowds, Easter in #Botswana ticks all the right boxes, says adventure travel specialist, Acacia Africa. Think emerald-green landscapes, blue skies, and with fewer visitors, a greater number of unexpected wildlife sightings.

The seven day Okavango Wilderness Trails small group tour includes a Fish Eagle River Cruise in the Chobe National Park, mokoro safaris on the delta, and a great introduction to conservation, a game drive in the Khama Rhino Sanctuary.

Acacia Africa’s small group safaris take between four and 12 travellers - those with kids in tow, joined by couples, singles and seniors. Often covering more than one country and going overland rather than by plane adds to the excitement, children connecting the dots between destinations. Prices for children and adults are the same - Acacia’s safaris aimed at travellers who want to see the real Africa on a budget.

PITCHUP.COM has added exciting new #destinations to its portfolio – Australia, Greece, Canada, Botswana and Lithuania bringing the total number of countries in Pitchup.com’s portfolio to 32.

Pitchup.com founder Dan Yates said: “Pitchup.com is always looking for new and exciting outdoor accommodation options. Despite fears about the future of the UK outside of the EU, and the plummeting pound, Brexit is actually fueling Pitchup.com’s expansion as we are finding people don’t want to give up their overseas holidays but are instead looking for more economical options.”

Botswana game-viewing – from £11pppn, Family-run Mwandi View, along the Chobe River, 18km from Chobe National Park, is perfect for watching sunsets and game viewing, as it’s located among three large migration routes. Bungee jumping, river cruises, game drives and bush walks can all be booked on site. There’s an infinity pool overlooking the plains and a restaurant.

Family friendly camping Down Under – from £11pppn, with easy access to some of New South Wales’ superb nature attractions, such as Wollomombi Falls and the New England and Oxley Wild Rivers national parks is Armidale Tourist Park. On site there’s tennis, table tennis, pool, air hockey, a ‘jumping pillow’ and heated pool.

Right by the beach in Greece – from £7pppn, with direct access to 12km of fine golden sand on a sheltered beach and 4km from Rethymno, a historically important old town built by the Republic of Venice, Camping Elizabeth is perfect for beach bums and history buffs. Throw in a bit of romance – the beach taverna has tables directly on the sand – add some mod cons including washing machines, hot showers and wifi, and it’s the perfect Greek getaway – at a great price.

Botswana the must-see destination for 2016, says Lonely Planet

LONELY PLANET has named #Botswana as its top must-see destination for 2016, describing it as 'wild Africa at its best'.

Seventeen percent of Botswana's land is given over to #conservation, while the jewel in Botswana's crown, the #OkavangoDelta, was officially recognized last year when it was made the 1,000th UNESCO World Heritage site.

Botswana majors on low density tourism, with small camps and strict curbs on visitor numbers. The country is often tagged 'the safest destination in Africa', with little poaching or corruption.

Safari specialist Real Africa is delighted to see Botswana's popularity continue to grow, but adds a note of caution: with visitor numbers restricted, people wishing to go in 2016 should book now.

‘Do not wait until after Christmas to book your safari to Botswana’ says Real Africa's sales director, Paul Hickey Fry. ‘Come the New Year, we will already be looking at availability for 2017. As a general rule you should look to book a full 11 months in advance, just as soon as flight availability is released.’

The peak months of September and October 2016, when herds are at their most dramatic, are already showing limited availability while the Green Season months (until March 2016) have been sold out for months following a series of special offers, advises Real Africa.
How to get there

There are no direct flights to Botswana. Most visitors travel via Johannesburg to Maun, the main gateway for the Okavango. The Chobe National Park, a highlight of visits to Botswana, is easily accessed from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Road transfers from the falls to Chobe take approximately three hours.
