Now that will be a room with a view . . .

THE first-ever luxury space hotel was introduced today during the Space 2.0 Summit in San Jose, California. Named after the magical light phenomenon that illuminates the Earth's polar skies, Aurora Station is being developed by Orion Span and the company's team of space industry veterans, who have over 140 years of human space experience.

The first fully modular space station to ever debut, Aurora Station will operate as the first luxury hotel in space. The exclusive hotel will host six people at a time – including two crew members. Space travelers will enjoy a completely authentic, once-in-a-lifetime astronaut experience with extraordinary adventure during their 12-day journey, starting at $9.5M per person. Deposits are now being accepted for a future stay on Aurora Station, which is slated to launch in late 2021 and host its first guests in 2022.

Space on Tour

EUROPEAN
Space Agency Astronaut Tim Peake has launched a ‘first-of-its-kind’ national tour of the Soyuz spacecraft used for his Principia mission, with the aim of inspiring a generation of people across the country.

The Science Museum Group, which acquired the capsule Soyuz TMA - 19M in 2016, and global technology innovators Samsung, have joined forces to create The National Tour of Tim Peake’s Spacecraft and Space Descent VR.

The Soyuz spacecraft will go on public display across the length and breadth of the British Isles, enhanced by Space Descent VR - a unique virtual reality adventure using Samsung Gear VR technology which places visitors right at the heart of Tim Peake’s journey from the International Space Station back to Earth.

It’s the first time that a Science Museum Group object has ever undertaken such a comprehensive tour of the UK, and the venture has a unique twist as one more tour venue will be chosen via a public competition.  Any venue interested in being the sixth venue of the tour, in autumn 2018, can apply via an online competition form at group.sciencemuseum.org.uk

To the moon and back

THE U.S. Government made a historic ruling in August of this year, to allow the first private enterprise, Moon Express, Inc. (MoonEx), permission to #travel beyond Earth’s orbit and land on the #Moon in 2017.

This breakthrough U.S. policy decision provides authorization to Moon Express for a maiden flight of its robotic spacecraft onto the Moon’s surface, beginning a new era of ongoing commercial lunar exploration and discovery, unlocking the immense potential of the Moon’s valuable resources.

This ruling also establishes an important precedent for the private sector to engage in peaceful space exploration and for commercial ventures.

Affordable space tourism just a decade away

#SPACE tourism won’t be a fantasy for much longer, former NASA astronaut Don Thomas tells the Daily Telegraph:

‘It's going to happen. Virgin Galactic may be the first. Sub-orbital flights that go to about 85 miles – for five minutes of zero gravity, and to show you the black sky and the curvature of the earth. I would guess they will be launching in the next two years. And then there are other companies, like SpaceX, which has been sending supplies to the international space station, and is due to start sending crews next year.

‘Shortly after that, I would anticipate they will send paying customers. It's beginning to open up. You're going to see the price drop. To go to the space station now, as a tourist, – you pay the Russians $65 million. With Virgin Galactic, the price comes down to a quarter of a million dollars. I would think that, in a decade or so, you will see flights to space for $10,000 to $15,000. Space travel will be more in line with an exotic trip to Antarctica.

‘It will still be a lot of money, but it will be within reach. It won't just be for millionaires and billionaires.’

Take a 60 minute ride in space, for just £91,000

KAYAK.CO.UK has become the first travel search engine in the UK to offer #spacetravel.

The out-of-this-world journeys are on offer with the travel search engine for £91,476 per person with XCOR Space Expeditions.

Research from KAYAK.co.uk among the British public shows a strong appetite for space tourism and found that over half of UK adults (52%) say they would like to try space travel – providing it was safe and affordable. Men were significantly more likely to want to try it than women.

More than a third of Brits (37%) think there is a chance that recreational travel into space will become commonplace in their lifetime.

Expeditions with XCOR will depart – it says here – from the Mojave Desert in California and CuraƧao (Dutch Caribbean) taking approximately five minutes to get out of the Earth’s atmosphere. Passengers get a view of Planet Earth during the flight, which lasts for approximately one hour.
