Time to shine again for Christmas Island

CHRISTMAS Island’s tourism industry finally has the opportunity to shine again. This week, the island’s Immigration Detention Centre (IDC), which opened its doors in 2008, will scale back to ‘hot contingency’ status, which means it will be closed to detainees, and only operational should the need arise. 

Tourism operators on the tropical island, located 2600 kilometres north-west of Perth, hope this change in status of the centre means the spotlight can once again be shone on the island’s extraordinary natural wonders. “Our industry has had to endure many challenges during the past ten years,” reports Lisa Preston, Chair of the Christmas Island Tourism Association, adding “it’s great to be able to finally start getting our positive messages out into our markets”. Earlier this week, the tropical island celebrated its 60th anniversary as an Australian Territory.

Most popular activites in Portugal

THE most popular activities in 2017 were the boat trips, with the trips to Benagil caves being the favourite choice. Don't dive in head first

WATER sport enthusiasts will be planning on travelling abroad in the coming months in search of warmer climates, so Airport Parking & Hotels (APH) has created a guide comparing airline policies on the kit divers and anglers take with them. 

The research reviews the policies of 15 airlines, including British Airways, Emirates, and Virgin Atlantic for travelling with water sports equipment abroad and compares checked baggage allowances, additional costs for equipment, and which sports equipment is allowed on flights.

The checked baggage allocation differs between airlines, but starts at 20kg, as offered by six of the airlines, including bmi regional, Jet2, and easyJet. Of the 15 airlines researched, booking First Class flights with Emirates provides the highest maximum weight allowance of 50kg.

Diving equipment is permitted on 13 of the airlines researched, including KLM, Qantas Group, and Virgin Atlantic. Icelandair does not include diving equipment in its standard baggage allowance, while Aer Lingus and British Airways state that diving equipment must be packed in recognized kit bags, and Monarch and Air France specify that scuba diving tanks must be empty.

Fishing equipment is permitted on 10 of the airlines surveyed, including Jet2, Air France, and bmi Regional. Policies for carrying the equipment differ between airlines, with Norwegian Air specifying that fishing rods must be packed in suitable hard casing and Aer Lingus accepting equipment no longer than 2.05m/6.7ft.

Board sporting baggage is welcomed on all 15 airlines and includes surfboards, windsurfboards, kiteboards, bodyboards, longboards, sailboards, kneeboards, wakeboards, boogie boards, and skim boards. Virgin Atlantic enables passengers to carry either windsurfing or kitesurfing equipment, but will not permit both, and that the carriage of windsurfing equipment, surfboards, and wakeboards on Flybe flights is on a stand-by basis only. Water skis are permitted on four airlines, such as bmi regional and Qantas Group, while Delta bans canoes and kayaks.

Tourism news from India

ANDHRA PRADESH has opened a range of water sports and #adventure #tourism facilities. 

They include parasailing, jeep parasailing, para-motoring, water skiing, and speed boat rides.

In the adventure tourism sector, activities include waterfall rappelling, rock climbing, and high rope courses.

Neerabh Kumar Prasad, the state’s principal secretary for tourism, said: ‘We are extremely proud to announce the launch of a host of water sport and adventure tourism facilities in Andhra Pradesh. This launch will herald a new dimension in tourism in the state.’

Future plans include helicopter tourism and the opening of 33 hotels.

Jharkhand to develop mining tourism

THE government of Jharkhand, in eastern #India, is planning to develop mines into tourist spots. The state intends to re-develop closed and abandoned mines and promote them as tourist attractions.

The state’s tourism department also plans to promote its historic terracotta temples. Located in Maluti, the 78 distinctive temples were built between the 17th and 19th centuries.

Adventure activities in Serbia

SKIING – Serbia's most developed and popular ski resorts are Kopaonik, Tornik on Zlatibor, and Stara Planina.

WHITE WATER RAFTING – Hot spots for rafting include Lim, one of Serbia's most exciting rivers, and the River Drina, which is suitable for dinghy rafting.

CANYONING is new sport for Serbia. Key locations include the Tribe Canyon, the second highest in Serbia. Most canyoning takes place in May to late September. 

WATER SPORTS – The fast-flowing rivers are great for rafting, dinghy sailors, rowers and flat-water kayakers head for the wide waters of the Danube, Lake Sava at Ada Ciganlija, Lake Palić, Bela Crkva lakes, and the Silver Lake.

Date set for Malta yacht race

THE Royal #Malta Yacht Club is anticipating another large fleet for the 36th Rolex Middle Sea Race (MSR) in October. Entries for the 606-nautical mile race are being received, with more than 50 boats from 18 countries already registered.

The race – which starts on October 17 – follows a long yet varied course on which small boats can compete against larger ones … and even win.

The largest number of entries in the #RolexMSR was 122, established last year.

Marine tourism survey for Scotland

MARINE SCOTLAND is launching a survey of #recreation and #tourism around the Scottish coast, the aim of which is to provide data to support marine planning.

The Scottish Government’s Rural Affairs, Food and Environment minister, Richard Lochhead, said: ‘Marine tourism is worth an estimated £360 million to the Scottish economy, creating jobs, increasing participation in sports and recreational activities, and showcasing #Scotland in international markets as a world class destination. This survey provides a great opportunity to promote marine recreation and tourism throughout the country.

‘I would encourage anyone with an interest in marine tourism and recreation to complete this survey by October 31.’

Sarah Brown, project manager added: ‘We hope the survey will show us where the most important places are for each activity around Scotland so we can have a better understanding of the importance of different areas as regional marine plans are drawn up. By telling us who does what and where, the survey will help ensure these plans reflect Scotland’s unique opportunities for activities such as kayaking, sailing, wildlife watching, or simply playing about with a frisbee on the beach. It will also help justify and guide future investment in facilities and infrastructure.’

Off to the Azores!

AS BOTH Ryanair and SATA International now fly direct (in under five hours) to the Azores from London, holidaymakers have the opportunity to explore the relatively little-known Portuguese archipelago for the first time this summer.

The nine islands in the group offer a world of green volcanoes and wildlife hidden in the middle of the Atlantic.

Here are some of the things to do on #TheAzores:

Swim with wild dolphins –The #Azores is the only destination in Europe where wildlife lovers can swim alongside numerous species of dolphin in their wild, natural habitat. Species include the bottlenose, spotted, and striped dolphins. No pens involved; just jump off the boat into the ocean. Stand up paddle board in a volcano crater –Few can claim to have glided across the waters of a lake in a volcano crater. Rent a paddle board or take to the water with an instructor for a stand-up paddle boarding lesson at the lakes of Sete Cidades on Sao Miguel Island. Eat dishes cooked in the crater of a volcano – Discover the art of cooking in a volcano in Furnas, Sao Miguel Island; a subtropical valley and historic village inside a sleeping volcano crater. It is here that villagers prepare the traditional dish, Cozido das Furnas, before burying pots of the stew in the ground. The earth here is so hot that it cooks the dish in a morning.

Look a whale in the eye – There is nothing quite like looking a whale in the eye, and there are few better places to do that than in the Azores. Rib boats go out to the oceans surrounding Sao Miguel, Pico, Faial, and Terceira islands in the spring, summer, and autumn in search of the 25 resident and migratory species.

Dive with sharks and pelagic sea life –Experience the adrenaline-rush of plunging into the Atlantic Ocean in search of pelagic sea life and Blue Sharks. Wary at first, these curious predators tend to approach and inspect each diver as they gain trust. After this, they will often swim slowly among a group. Dive from sites such as Condor Seamount (accessible from Pico and Faial), where average sightings typically range from five to 15 sharks per trip.

Walk through ancient magma chambers –There are ancient magma chambers on Pico. With hard hats and torches, travellers can take tours through the volcanic formations.

Drink volcano wine in UNESCO vineyards –Sample the Azores' volcano wine at UNESCO vineyards in the foothills of Pico Mountain, where walls of black lava stone protect the vines from the salty Atlantic Ocean. The main wine produced here is a white Verdelho wine, which can now be enjoyed and paired with seafood at restaurants across the islands.

Glasses for swimmers!

PEOPLE who have to wear glasses when they swim have a problem, especially if they like swimming underwater. Swimming goggles don’t fit comfortably over glasses. But after years of research and development by optical expert Bob Forgan, there is a watersport mask – Aquaviz – for swimmers with vision problems.

Aquaviz is a 'snap in' insert, containing the wearer's prescription lenses (including bi-focals and varifocals) that fits in to specially-designed watertight goggles. The insert has been designed to sit the same distance away from eyes as most regular glasses.

As well as being the first goggles to incorporate the user's prescription lenses, the Aquaviz mask sits around the eyes, so they are said to be comfortable.
