Information at the touch of a virtual button

LOS ANGELES International Airport (LAX) is offering guests a fun and innovative way to stay informed with the launch of self-assistance kiosks in two of LAX’s terminals, Terminal 2 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal. The AskLAX kiosks provide a wealth of information at the touch of a virtual button across a 36-inch touch screen.

This includes terminal maps, concession and retail information, emergency information, transportation options, and traffic conditions. Guests can even take email-able selfies. Additionally, guests can speak directly with a knowledgeable LAX GEM (Guest Experience Member) over video chat in real-time.

The kiosks are another way LAX is providing information to travellers during the busy travel season, complementing our Guest Experience Members and Volunteer Information Professionals, who can be found throughout LAX’s nine terminals.

Access Tourism launches the first Social Tourism portal in the UK

SOCIAL Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the tourist market and offers opportunities for businesses to expand into this growth area. The ageing population (with an average age of over 45 and increasing) together with people with special needs which account for some 12 million in the UK bring new challenges to tourism providers: the provision of access to extensive information.

Zoltan (36), Founder at Access Tourism explains the concept as 'the first channel that provides thorough information to people who seek access to extensive travel material due to their age, mobility issues, single parent family status or disability'.

The unique Guides are promoting places with elderly visitors, families and people with special needs in mind in a format that gives clear information to readers about accessibility- and family- and multi-generational related particulars. They are aiming to publish the first Social Tourism Guide by October, 2018 on Amazon and in print.

Dolphin Days at SeaWorld Orlando

DOLPHIN Days debuted on April 1st replacing the popular Blue Horizons after an eleven-year run at Dolphin Theater. In the new presentation, the audience will learn more about the individual personalities of each Atlantic bottlenose dolphin while witnessing the special bond they share with their trainers.

Dolphin Days will also present an interactive opportunity for young guests and during each show, one lucky young volunteer will be selected from the audience to learn firsthand from the training team in an up-close encounter with one of the dolphins and a green-winged macaw.

The addition of Dolphin Days is the latest example of how SeaWorld continues to provide families with experiences that matter. The park’s new Dolphin Nursery will open in time for summer, offering an interactive educational experience for guests to see dolphins up close.

The addition of virtual reality to Kraken and the new nighttime spectacular Electric Ocean round out an exciting line-up of new attractions and shows opening this year.

On the buses . . .

TRANSPORT for London (TfL) is trialling a new battery-powered bus stop display screen which will for the first time provide real time travel information on other bus services as well as its own.

The first trial is being conducted at a bus stop at Northwood Station, Hillingdon and will give customers travelling to and from Mount Vernon Hospital all the latest travel information that they need.

The new screens can be quickly and easily attached to bus stop posts and display next bus arrival information to customers. The signs are battery-powered so they are not limited to bus stops with shelters and an electrical power supply.

Simon Reed, TfL's Head of Technical Services, said: 'We are continually exploring new ways to deliver information to our customers while they are on the move and to ensure we are at the forefront of new technology as it develops.

New app to help sign language users

NETWORK Rail has launched a new smartphone app on October 5, which will help enable the 1 in 6 deaf people who live in the UK to access a range of information to help them to use level crossings safely. The Signly Network Rail app launch forms part of a new campaign that aims to support people with visual, hearing or mobility impairment, who may face additional challenges when using a level crossing.

Signly Network Rail is the first national roll out of this new technology, which can be downloaded for free on Apple and Google. The app works much like a QR-code where smartphone users can point their device camera over leaflets or posters, but rather than a QR-code it is programmed to recognise an image. The app inserts a smart layer of signed (or spoken/filmed) digital information onto the screen of the user’s own mobile device. They simply open the app, point their device at the Signly- enabled information and a sign language translator appears as if by magic.

Don't dive in head first

WATER sport enthusiasts will be planning on travelling abroad in the coming months in search of warmer climates, so Airport Parking & Hotels (APH) has created a guide comparing airline policies on the kit divers and anglers take with them.

The research reviews the policies of 15 airlines, including British Airways, Emirates, and Virgin Atlantic for travelling with water sports equipment abroad and compares checked baggage allowances, additional costs for equipment, and which sports equipment is allowed on flights.

The checked baggage allocation differs between airlines, but starts at 20kg, as offered by six of the airlines, including bmi regional, Jet2, and easyJet. Of the 15 airlines researched, booking First Class flights with Emirates provides the highest maximum weight allowance of 50kg.

Diving equipment is permitted on 13 of the airlines researched, including KLM, Qantas Group, and Virgin Atlantic. Icelandair does not include diving equipment in its standard baggage allowance, while Aer Lingus and British Airways state that diving equipment must be packed in recognized kit bags, and Monarch and Air France specify that scuba diving tanks must be empty.

Fishing equipment is permitted on 10 of the airlines surveyed, including Jet2, Air France, and bmi Regional. Policies for carrying the equipment differ between airlines, with Norwegian Air specifying that fishing rods must be packed in suitable hard casing and Aer Lingus accepting equipment no longer than 2.05m/6.7ft.

Board sporting baggage is welcomed on all 15 airlines and includes surfboards, windsurfboards, kiteboards, bodyboards, longboards, sailboards, kneeboards, wakeboards, boogie boards, and skim boards. Virgin Atlantic enables passengers to carry either windsurfing or kitesurfing equipment, but will not permit both, and that the carriage of windsurfing equipment, surfboards, and wakeboards on Flybe flights is on a stand-by basis only. Water skis are permitted on four airlines, such as bmi regional and Qantas Group, while Delta bans canoes and kayaks.

The research can be found in the Know Before You Go section of the APH website at http://www.aph.com/water-sports-equipment.

Access all areas

‘Don’t assume that because someone has a #disability, certain #holidays would be excluded for them’

Gillian Moorhouse-Hoole – at DisabledHolidays.com – looks at some of the holiday options for #disabledtravellers

AT one end of the spectrum, it could be someone who doesn’t need any mobility adaptations, but their child has autism so they want a property that’s quiet or away from busy areas; or someone travelling with grandparents who just needs to know whether there are grab rails in the shower or a hoist to get in and out of bed. Then, at the other end, somebody might have a spinal injury but also other co-existing conditions such as breathing difficulties, meaning they need 24-hour care or extra help in the evenings.

You could also have a family with three children where one has a disability, so then it’s important to cater for everybody within that family, rather than focusing just on the disabled child. Likewise, if it’s the parent who has the disability, you’ve got to make sure you get it right for them, but it’s also got to be a fun family holiday for everyone.

First steps
The most important thing to know first is what the family wants to do. Find out what type of holidays they have enjoyed before, and don’t assume that because someone has a disability, certain holidays would be excluded for them. We book people on skiing and activity holidays, so it’s about letting the person with the disability guide you to what they want to do.

Then you have to find out their needs and check thoroughly what equipment they use at home, before researching what is available to make sure what you’re looking to book actually meets their needs. Sometimes people have given us feedback that they have been told a hotel has a wheelchair-accessible room, but the bathroom turns out to be down a couple of steps, for example.

What we would understand as accessible doesn’t always translate fully to other countries, and sometimes it can vary even between properties in the same hotel chain … so never assume anything.

Even when accessible rooms are available, a lot of mainstream operators can’t guarantee you will get that room. It’s not like having a sea view; it’s a fundamental part of a holiday for someone with a disability. If it’s not 100% guaranteed they’ll get that room, it’s like sending someone into the unknown and crossing your fingers.

Destinations

Nowhere is off-limits; it’s for the family to decide which destination does it for them. I might suggest Majorca, Benidorm, or Florida, but if that’s not their kind of holiday there’s no point in pursuing it. It’s just worth bearing in mind that it gets more difficult the more remote a place is or the less infrastructure it has, especially if they need specific equipment.

The US, the Canary Islands, and mainland Spain are great for families because they’ve got good, accessible hotels and you can get hold of equipment quite easily, plus there’s all the usual family entertainment. Theme parks are always family favourites. There can be some limitations on which rides people with disabilities can transfer on to, so you have to make them aware of that, but we provide the facts and then rely on parents to make a judgement call like they would for any child.

The rise of family-friendly cruises has also been very popular. Ships are used to catering for guests with physical disabilities: 99% of areas on ships are accessible – the cabins, the restaurants, the toilets – and you haven’t got the worry of finding a restaurant that’s wheelchair-accessible each night.

The all-inclusive package is always a bonus for families because there aren’t as many hidden charges, so if kids want drinks or ice creams during the day, it’s all taken care of.

Many families also like villa holidays because you have the exclusivity of your own villa, often with a pool or barbecue area. If you have a child with autism, you don’t ever have to feel uncomfortable if they are being noisy, which some parents tell us can be a worry for them in unfamiliar environments.

Getting there

If a child has autism, getting on a flight could be quite distressing, so some parents steer away from flying because it’s too noisy and the space is too confined. If they are flying, it’s important to consider ahead of time whether they need assistance getting through the airport, or if they will require essential medication or equipment in the cabin, as everything needs to be pre-approved by the airline, especially if you’re transferring from one airline to another. You can’t assume that a wheelchair that’s fine to go on one flight will be OK to go on another. The same goes for medication; it’s always helpful to have a doctor’s letter explaining what it is and why it’s needed to avoid any misunderstandings.

Cost

There shouldn’t be any additional cost for having an accessible room, but it’s not always that simple. A hotel might have a range of room categories, but adapt only a deluxe room for wheelchair use because it’s got more floor space, so guests end up having to pay for that higher room category. There could also be a cost for hiring equipment if it isn’t fitted as standard and, if you have a care team, you have to factor in where they will stay.

Plan ahead

Make sure you confirm any essential equipment before you make a booking. If the client needs a hoist or a shower chair delivered to a particular area in Spain, for example, you have to make sure you can get that before you confirm anything else, because if they can’t have that, there’s no point in pursuing the booking.

It’s crucial to plan ahead and make sure the family is actually getting what you’ve booked. If it’s the middle of the summer holidays and they turn up to find the room they thought was wheelchair-accessible isn’t, there might not be a suitable alternative, as a lot of hotels only have a couple of adapted rooms and they fill up

Gillian Moorhouse-Hoole is business development assistant at specialist travel firm DisabledHolidays.com, which can arrange everything from cottages and caravans in the UK to skiing holidays, cruises, safaris, and around-the-world trips.

GoEuro launches travel app

GOEURO has launched a free app – on android and ios – providing options for travel by train, bus, or air.

The app allows users to compare travel time and prices from more than 160 rail, bus, and airlines enabling them to compare travel time and prices for the full journey and book tickets in eight countries.

Naren Shaam, CEO of GoEuro said: ‘This app makes rail and coach travel as easy to search, compare and book as it is for air. It gives real-time transport information and booking options for every corner of the UK plus several European markets.

‘Travel search has traditionally been dominated by websites and apps that focus on air and accommodation bookings. However, the increased popularity of rail and coach transport within the UK and Europe has opened a huge gap in the market to combine all modes of transport in one place. We are offering a must-have product for anyone looking to book coaches, trains, and air travel domestically or within Europe.’

Covering 4,025 train stations, coach terminals, and airports across the UK and 33,000 unique destinations in Europe, the #GoEuro app offers the services of three apps in one, eliminating the need to download multiple travel apps.
