Easter disruptions on the railways

OVER the Easter bank holiday weekend, Network Rail will be delivering more than 200 projects across Britain as part of its Railway Upgrade Plan.

This will provide faster and more frequent services to help relieve over-crowding on Britain's railways. 

More than 95 per cent of the railway will be unaffected but passengers are being advised to plan journeys carefully as there will be changes to some services.

Major railway upgrades will mean weekend changes for passengers

NETWORK Rail and South West Trains are advising passengers to Check Before You Travel as major track upgrades at Waterloo as part of the Waterloo & South West Upgrade, and improvement works elsewhere on the network, will significantly reduce the number of trains running during two weekends in March.

Network Rail’s £600,000 investment to replace key sections of track at Waterloo, taking place over the weekends of 4 & 5 March and 18 & 19 March.

On the tracks . . .

NETWORK Rail and South West Trains are giving passengers an early glimpse of how the multi-million pound re-development of the former International Terminal at Waterloo will eventually look, by using virtual reality headsets (footage available for download).

The headsets provide passengers with an immersive, 360-degree view of London Waterloo as it will be from December 2018, when the work to rebuild the former Waterloo International Terminal, and bring five platforms into regular commuter use, will be completed.

The new part of the station will be connected to the main station via a brand new bridge and concourse area, currently under construction. The work forms part of the huge £800 million investment to boost capacity at Waterloo by 30% by December 2018.

New app to help sign language users

NETWORK Rail has launched a new smartphone app on October 5, which will help enable the 1 in 6 deaf people who live in the UK to access a range of information to help them to use level crossings safely. The Signly Network Rail app launch forms part of a new campaign that aims to support people with visual, hearing or mobility impairment, who may face additional challenges when using a level crossing.

Signly Network Rail is the first national roll out of this new technology, which can be downloaded for free on Apple and Google. The app works much like a QR-code where smartphone users can point their device camera over leaflets or posters, but rather than a QR-code it is programmed to recognise an image. The app inserts a smart layer of signed (or spoken/filmed) digital information onto the screen of the user’s own mobile device. They simply open the app, point their device at the Signly- enabled information and a sign language translator appears as if by magic.
