WILD and exotic times ahead, when the lights go on at two of Vivid Sydney’s favourite precincts, Taronga Zoo and The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. Taronga Zoo will shine a bold and bright spotlight on conservation and endangered wildlife with a family-friendly, spectacular display of giant animal light sculptures. As the Zoo’s permanent residents retire for the evening, Lights for the Wild will introduce visitors to fierce and friendly creatures, and take them on a colourful journey through fragile habitats — from the ocean, to the jungle and the Australian bush.

When in Hungary . . . visit the zoo

THE Budapest Zoo, built in 1866, is the oldest and largest zoo park in Hungary. Until the 1950s, it was the sole zoo park of the country. Its 11-hectare territory has been declared a natural preserve area in 1986. The park features 3,500 species of plants and 750 animal species.

A major renovation began in 1990, resulting in nearly all species getting their modern, spacious habitats. There are quite a few works of art on the territory of the Zoo; the two most significant of these are the Elephant House and the main entrance to the Zoo, built in Art Nouveau style. 

For children the Zoo has a special section where the cubs of some species may be fondled and fed with special food. There are also signs in Braille along with statuettes to touch for the blind. The roads and the animal houses can be accessed by wheelchair.

A wild night out

ANNUAL Starry Safari Overnight Adventures, an unforgettable after-hours experience that includes spending the night at the zoo.

This ultimate outdoor camping adventure, in The Living Desert’s Tent Village, features a unique, upclose and personal animal encounter, as well as a memorable nighttime guided walk through the park. The activities take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m., with the night ending with the time-honored camping tradition of roasting s’mores over an open fire. 

Campers are provided a roomy four-person tent, equipped with a sleeping pad for a comfortable night’s sleep. Guests are required to bring their own sleeping bag and blankets along with personal toiletries and additional clothes for the next day. In the morning, campers will enjoy a continental breakfast.

Starry Safari concludes at 8:30 a.m. and guests are encouraged to stay and explore The Living Desert for the day (park admission is included).  Available Starry Safari dates include Friday, April 21, Saturday, April 29,

Saturday, May 20, and Friday, May 26.

Private Starry Safari Adventures are available to groups over 20 with special group-rate pricing.

A night in the zoo

Honours for Tenerife’s twin parks

SIAM PARK and Loro Parque in #Tenerife have been recognized in TripAdvisor's 2015 Travellers' Choice Awards. 

The island's Thai-themed water kingdom, #SiamPark, has claimed No. 1 position in the world's top 25 water parks for the second consecutive year, while #LoroParque has been voted the second-best zoo.

Holidaymakers can buy “twin tickets” to access both parks, with prices starting at £41 for adults and £28 for children aged six to 11.
