Catching crabs 101!

RESEARCH by Visit North Norfolk has revealed that many adults and children do not know traditional skills such as using a compass or flying a kite.

To address this knowledge gap, Visit North Norfolk has created a series of films and guides showing how to carry out traditional outdoor pastimes, what you will need, and where to go.  Its campaign, 'Nip to North Norfolk' has six films focusing on:

• Spotting and naming clouds 
• Building a sandcastle 
• Catching a crab 
• Mooring a boat 
• Beachcombing 
• Using a compass.

Green light for multimillion-pound Norwich Castle plan

THE HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND (HLF) has earmarked £9.2 million for a ‘Gateway to Medieval England’ project to create a major heritage attraction at Norwich Castle.

The castle has been awarded an initial HLF development grant of £462,400, which will identify essential repairs and conservation work and set out plans for the development. The project aims to show the keep as it appeared during the rule of the Norman kings.

Newly-exposed Norman archaeology and architecture will tell stories of the castle’s past and a ‘battlements experience’ will offer views of medieval and present-day Norwich.

A partnership with the British Museum will bring medieval treasures to Norfolk, displayed alongside artefacts from Norwich Castle’s own collection.

Robyn Llewellyn, head of HLF East of England, said: ‘Norwich Castle is one of Europe’s most spectacular medieval keeps and home to a wonderful historical collection. We are recognizing its potential by funding a range of plans to enhance the museum’s existing displays and creating a complementary British Museum Gallery of the Medieval Period.

‘We’ve earmarked £9.2 million for the project and will be working closely with Norfolk Museums Service over the coming months to help them produce a first-class visitor attraction.’

Building work is expected to start in 2018, with the revitalized keep being open to the public by 2020.

Tales of Lynn

THE HISTORY of King's Lynn in #Norfolk will be brought to life with the opening of a multi-million-pound attraction, Stories of Lynn, on March 25. One of the main treasures on display will be the King John Cup, a trophy created in memory of the Magna Carta monarch, who died 800 years ago this October.

Three historic buildings in the town hall complex have been re-modelled to provide exhibition and archive spaces dedicated to the heritage of the Hanseatic port on the North Norfolk coast. Visitors will be able to see interactive displays and rare documents at the museum.

King's Lynn was one of the last places visited by King John before his death in 1216.

Stories of Lynn will act as a gateway to the town's other heritage sites, which include the Red Mount Chapel, neighbouring King's Lynn Minster, Greyfriars Tower, True's Yard, the Lynn Museum, and Marriott's Warehouse.

Norfolk, Suffolk target the Dutch in tourism drive

#NORFOLK AND #SUFFOLK tourism boards are targeting overseas visitors in their 2016 campaigns. 

Using a combination of new marketing techniques and off-peak prices, tourism businesses in the regions are hoping to attract high-spending overseas visitors. 

Visit Norfolk, working with Visit East Anglia, is taking the lead with a £150,000 New Year tourism campaign to attract Dutch visitors to the two East Anglian counties.

Executive director at Visit East Anglia, Pete Waters, said his team hopes to capitalize on the direct transport links already in place between this region and the Netherlands to increase Dutch visitor numbers by 5%, generating an estimated £2.3 million boost to the local economy.

The campaign would capitalize on the Stena Line ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland and Norwich Airport to Amsterdam. Last year, 198,507 overseas visitors spent £100.82 million in Norfolk – approximately 3.3% of the overall £2.97 billion visitor economy. More than 210,000 foreign visitors spent £86.11 million in Suffolk. 

Chairman of Norfolk Tourist Attractions Association Martin Dupée said: ‘It’s not as hard to get into Norfolk as it once was, but we have still got a way to go. Having that link with European partners is an opportunity that can bring in the international market.’

Free Wi-Fi in Norwich city centre; Mahler & Shakespeare in 2016

TOURISTS and shoppers in Norwich’s city centre can now access free Wi-Fi, after an £100,000 investment led by the local Business Improvement District (BID). Download speeds of up to 5MBs per second are available in some of the city’s key shopping areas, and the service will be expanded in the coming months.

Nick Bond, head of tourism at VisitNorwich, said: ‘Tourists increasingly expect to be able to access digital information on the go. Free Wi-Fi provided by the Norwich BID in the centre of the city helps visitors get the very best out of Norwich’s tremendous shopping, culture, heritage, and food and drink offer.’ 

Events in Norwich in 2016 include a Norwich Philharmonic performance of Mahler’s 8th symphony (May 21) at the Royal Norfolk Showground Arena, and the British Art Show (June 24-September 4) at Norwich University of the Arts and Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery. 

To mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, Maddermarket Theatre will be performing ‘Shakespeare at 400 mini festival’ (March-April), and Norwich Cathedral will host Shakespeare in the Cloisters (July 15-16).

Seaside celebration

THE Great Yarmouth #MaritimeFestival (September 5-6) celebrates the town's seafaring heritage, with visiting ships including the Götheborg (the world’s largest wooden sailing ship) and the Jubilee Sailing Trust's Lord Nelson, plus a full programme of international shanty and folk music, street entertainment, military re-enactments, arts, crafts, children's activities, and opportunities to learn more about the Norfolk Broads (England’s latest designated National Park) and local nature reserves.

Other vessels on show include the third last ship leave Dunkirk in 1940.

Festival activities and entertainment on South Quay are free, but a donation of £1 per visitor towards festival costs is welcomed.

Visitors in wheelchairs are advised to use the Middle Gate or the South Gate to access the event, since there is a 100-yard-long cobbled stretch towards the North Gate which some wheelchair users may find challenging to cross.

The Götheborg is a replica of the original ship which was built in 1738 in Stockholm for the Swedish East India Company. It made three voyages from Sweden to China, and in 1745 sank in Gothenburg harbour having returned from China.

Garden delights . . .

COMBERMERE ABBEY ESTATE in Whitchurch, Shropshire, is hosting a series of Open Garden Afternoons this summer, providing a rare chance to see this privately-owned historic estate.

They will be held on August 26, and September 23.

Visitors will be able to explore the estate’s Victorian walled gardens and glasshouse, its pleasure garden and garden wood, fruit tree maze, and lake.

The estate’s team of gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and share tips.

Tickets are priced at £5. Gates will open at 1pm, with the last entry at 4pm. Dogs and picnics are not permitted.

The abbey was built in 1133 as a Cistercian monastery. Now a family home, it is a venue for weddings, corporate events, and has ten holiday cottages.

AN open-air gallery of contemporary sculpture in the grounds of a Georgian mansion is the centrepiece of the first of an occasional series of visitor trails published by Congham Hall Hotel, near King’s Lynn, Norfolk. 

The Magnificent Seven… Norfolk #Gardens – the hotel's illustrated trail – features the collection, which is on display at nearby Houghton Hall.

The 90-mile self-guided circuit of the seven gardens begins with Congham Hall's herb collection. Others include Gooderstone Water Gardens, a naturalistic re-interpretation of a wet meadow, and Sandringham Gardens, a chronicle of the changing tastes in horticultural design over the past 150 years.

Go east for culture

IN a bid to attract more tourists to East Anglia, Norfolk and Suffolk county councils have hired a design agency to deliver a three-year programme to promote cultural tourism in both counties.

Tourism in the region is currently worth £4.6 billion annually, with approximately £2.8 billion and £1.8 billion generated by Norfolk and Suffolk respectively.

Get steamed up in Norfolk!

NORFOLK’S heritage railways offer a unique way to see the county. 

There are four of them …

The Mid-Norfolk Railway - www.mnr.org.uk, links the market towns of Wymondham and Dereham. During certain times of the year there is a steam locomotive running, and there are themed weekends.

The narrow gauge Bure Valley Railway - www.bvrw.co.uk runs through the heart of the Norfolk Broads, starting at Aylsham and terminating at Wroxham. Running alongside the track is the Bure Valley Path. Walkers and cyclists can walk or cycle one-way and let the train take the strain on the return journey.

The North Norfolk Railway - www.nnrailway.co.uk, or Poppy Line as it is also known, is one of England’s most scenic heritage tracks. It is accessible from the main rail network; take the Bittern line to Sheringham to connect with the Poppy line.

Pictured, right, is Ring Haw a Hunslet saddle tank, built in Leeds in 1940 for use at Nassington Quarry where it spent its entire working life before moving to the NNR in 1970. 

The four-mile Wells & Walsingham Light Railway is world’s longest 10-and-a-quarter-inch narrow gauge steam railway. Pictured is the Wells & Walsingham Light Railway locomotive "Norfolk Hero" taking on water at Wells station.

Upstairs, downstairs at Holkham Hall

A SHOW of photographs recording a year in the life of an English country estate will be the main exhibition at Holkham Hall, Norfolk, in 2015.

Behind Closed Doors: A Year in the Life of a Working Estate features the work of Magnum photographer Chris Steele-Perkins, who visited Holkham during a 12-month period. 

The portfolio includes informal pictures of the owners – Viscount and Viscountess Coke – gamekeepers, gardeners, and housekeepers.

The exhibition will be open to visitors from March 29 to October 31.
