THE PORT OF BLYTH in Northumberland will come alive over the August Bank Holiday this year, as it hosts the North Sea Tall Ships Regatta (August 26-29). 

Here are some of the best places to see up to 30 of the world’s largest Tall Ships:

Blyth Harbour – If you need to re-charge your batteries, but prefer to stay in the centre of the action, get a seat near the window or on the balcony of Blyth Boathouse Restaurant and Port Heritage Centre.

Blyth beach – A stretch of golden sand, home to the only beach huts in Northumberland, all of which are available for rent.

Druridge Bay – A seven mile-stretch of beach. Scan the horizon to the south for the approach of the regatta.

Newbiggin-by-the-Sea – Stroll along the curved promenade in this historic coastal town and look out to sea for a glimpse of the Tall Ships.

Seaton Delaval – See the Tall Ships on their approach into Blyth from the front door of Seaton Delaval Hall.

See the Tall Ships

NORTHUMBERLAND'S first Festival of the Coast takes place this summer, celebrating the county's 64 miles of coastline, and at its centrepiece will be the arrival of a fleet of vessels sailing in for the UK's only Tall Ships Regatta (August 26-29). 

Up to 30 Class A Tall Ships will be on show at the port of Blyth over the August Bank holiday weekend. The four-day regatta will feature 1.5 miles of free family entertainment including theatre, music, parades, and fireworks. The event will end with a race from the Northumberland coast to Gothenburg, Sweden. 

The Festival of the Coast will showcase the entire Northumberland coastline, from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north to Seaton Delaval in the south.

Seaside celebration

THE Great Yarmouth #MaritimeFestival (September 5-6) celebrates the town's seafaring heritage, with visiting ships including the Götheborg (the world’s largest wooden sailing ship) and the Jubilee Sailing Trust's Lord Nelson, plus a full programme of international shanty and folk music, street entertainment, military re-enactments, arts, crafts, children's activities, and opportunities to learn more about the Norfolk Broads (England’s latest designated National Park) and local nature reserves.

Other vessels on show include the third last ship leave Dunkirk in 1940.

Festival activities and entertainment on South Quay are free, but a donation of £1 per visitor towards festival costs is welcomed.

Visitors in wheelchairs are advised to use the Middle Gate or the South Gate to access the event, since there is a 100-yard-long cobbled stretch towards the North Gate which some wheelchair users may find challenging to cross.

The Götheborg is a replica of the original ship which was built in 1738 in Stockholm for the Swedish East India Company. It made three voyages from Sweden to China, and in 1745 sank in Gothenburg harbour having returned from China.

All aboard for the tall ships

TWO world-famous #TallShips will be heading to Greenwich, #London, over the #AugustBankHoliday, and MBNA Thames Clippers (www.thamesclippers.com) is offering tickets for a trip along the Thames to see the ships.

Visitors will be able to explore the decks and rigging of the Santa Maria Manuela from Portugal and the Dar Mlodziezy from Poland. 

Guides will be stationed around the walking route to talk about history of the ships, which will be moored near the Cutty Sark and the Old Royal Naval College.

The package includes return travel from either Greenwich or London Bridge City pier, with one hour to explore the ships. £10 for children, £20 for adults.
